One thing everyone might not be taking into count is that he might have been out at sea or adrift for awhile and the little fishies ate the portions that are gone. Normally a shark will attack and kill somthing but if it is not able to swallow the item it will move on. Almost the same with a croc or alligator, they attack and kill an animal then drag it to the bottom to let it die and decompose and become soft, I hear the smell of rotting flesh is like heaven to them. A none combative meal, easy to tear up and eat.
