I just bought a boat that rolls on a brand new competitive trailer. My problem is I cannot back it into my backyard because the brakes keep locking up. I found what looks like a button under the tongue, but it made no difference. Please tell me how I can over-ride these things I have tried the last two nights to get my boat in the back with no luck

Do you have a 5 wire hook up? If so are your reverse lights on the truck working? If so, then I'm all tapped out. There is a manual override but I am not familiar with that one. Can you post a pic of the tounge? Some one should be able to get this solved tonight.

Not sure about the Competitives, but the Extremes have an electric backup solenoid (wire into your reverse lights).
If you don't have that, there should be a key to stick in the tongue to stop the surge mechanism.
Either way, they have to have something to disengage the brakes (that's how they get them around the yard with a forklift).

If you don't have that, there should be a key to stick in the tongue to stop the surge mechanism.
Ours uses a 'key' for the surge breaks. It stops the tongue from retracting into the frame. Think of taping a penny in each side of the tongue to stop it from retracting.
This only applies to manual surge brakes.
Post a pic, we'll help.

You guys are life savers, I do have the five wire hook-up. (which until now I had no idea what the fifth wire was for) Stupid me I was just moving the boat from the front to the back I didn't hook-up the lights :frown: . Man I am pissed at myself, I have been cursing and holding up traffic for two days.

I have the five wire hook up and it works great with my truck but when somebody else tows my boat it's a problem. What I did was drill a hole in the trailer so the the trailer won't surge forward when I put a 1/4 inch bolt in it, it works great when you run into that problem. I hope this make sense

The Competitive trailers I have seen, don't have the same style tongue as the Extremes. They are a five wire setup with surge brakes though.

Even with a 4 wire hook up on the truck and a five wire on the boat you can still get them to release. All you have to do is plug the one on the end into one of the ones on the truck (like the driving lights) and they will release. It's a quick way to back up if you don't have the surge stop in place and you are using a friends truck or something.
