Hey froggy can you carry a concealed weapon since you were in the seals?
Like Tom said, no. But, the background check and safety course were waived when I applied because of the teams.
You need to have a reason for having one in Cali. I have a reasonable reason, would like to carry and my home county of Sonoma is far more relaxed than San Diego, but decided against it for numerous reasons. In my experience, if you carry around a hammer with you, everything starts looking like a nail for some reason.
I figure if I ever have a really good reason to carry, I just will. If it is a good enough reason, I will take my chances with law enforcement understanding. If it isn't a good reason, I don't need to be carrying it.
I figure I would want one in a couple of instances, all involving wilderness travel. In addition, it wouldn't be concealed in this case as I would actually be keeping it handy, as I suspect I may need it. With legitimate wildlife threats and my background, I don't think I would have a problem.
You would have to be an idiot to jack one of my vehicles with all of the logos, and I don't carry cash anymore to speak of, so two main reasons to get "hit" are gone.
Not to mention, very close to the top of the list of things not to do is pull a handgun on a SEAL in a close quarter situation. Really bad move. Most people who would pull a gun on you don't really intend to use it, they are threatening force. They need to be close enough to do whatever they need to do i.e. mug you or grab your keys or something, and very quickly they will get killed with their own gun. They may not intend to use it, but if you pull it on me, rest assured I will intend to use it. Immediately!
So you see, it is like I have a carry permit. Anyone who would pull a gun on me is going to end up giving it to me. I don't need to even worry about a "throw away". ;)
No, you don't get one from being a SEAL. While on active duty though, as a comm rep and ordinance rep, we carried any time we did anything in the civilian sector, i.e. travel. It is overrated. I don't even like carrying a wallet, let alone two pounds of hogleg and mags.

I agree Wes. I pity the fool that would do something as stupid as pull a gun on my brother at close range. Bad ending guaranteed.

Sig Sauer ,IMHO, produces the finest combat handguns in the world.
I've carried a P 226 for over 15 years as a duty weapon, first in 9mm and now in .40 . Never had a malfunction of any kind with either weapon, and I have put many, many rounds through them both.
If you can, hook up with a Sig certified Armorer/Rangmaster, and have him/her teach you about the weapon. It'll be worth the effort.

That was most peoples secondary weapon in the teams. P226. We would get issued one in the beginning of the workup, and throw it away right after CQB phase and get a new one. About 30% would develop cracked frames at the place where it slides on the receiver.
Of course, you shoot somewhere around 10,000 rounds in a single week during CQB, about half through the Sig. By the time we changed them out, there was well over 15,000 rounds through them.
Great gun. I carried a H&K SOCOM .45 personally, and then bought the USP .45 for myself and had it armored.

With that "C" model, make sure you test fire it with your carry ammo at night. A lot of stuff out there produces a big muzzle flash, and the compensated guns make it even bigger. This is bad because: 1. It will give away your exact location and 2. it can blind you temporarily.
Shoot a bunch of stuff through it and find what has the least amount of flash.
Personally, I carry the G27 sub-compact .40 and have the G22 as my home defense pistol. Nice that the hi-cap G22 mags also fit the G27...my backup mag for the G27 is the 15 round G22 hi-cap. :)

Is that the same as the HK MK23?
Yeah. "Technically" I carried that (the MK23) but the reality was, with comms gear, H-gear, ruck and everything else I had to carry in addition to a secondary, I bought a USP .45 and carried that instead. Much smaller and more easily carried, same punch and action. Plus, we never used suppressors in the field on secondaries.

Very cool i love hearing about military life, this weekend hanging out with some marine eod personel i got to hear some good stories. Was the usp .45 the tactical version? I'm debating on one or the other between them.

You will love your gun. I shoot every two weeks or so and have NEVER had an issue with this gun. Personally I like my sigs over my H&K. So what model did you end up going with. From my understanding the Sig Pro 2009 only comes in 9mm. Must be a 220 if you got the 45.

Thinking about picking up this brand new 220 out (45acp). Not so sure if I like the looks just yet though.

anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. ammo is cheap, life is expensive. good words to live by should you ever need to use a gun.

The MK23 is a giant gun that needs a holster the size of a ski boot. We used to call it any number of names like "hand cannon" or "Plasma ray gun" or something derogatory and based on the size and shape. It was conceived to answer a stupid requirement by the SEAL teams to have an "offensive" handgun which is a contradiction in terms. It had to keep a tight group up to 50 yards, which is an insane distance for a secondary, and it had to be able to screw on a suppressor and mount a surefire and tac laser onto it. Then, it needed a 12 round mag. It also had to be rated for a +P round, or TZZ ammo, which is a hot Israeli round I used to carry. When fully rigged out with a suppressor, red dot and Surefire on the bottom, the thing was just plain stupid huge.
So, you ended up with this huge gun. After H&K built it, they gave it to us to test and evaluate and we said... OK, the gun shoots great but it is too big, we never use a suppressor, we need the rail kit for the front, but it doesn't need to be so long, the decocking lever sucks big time because after a couple of thousand rounds it chews up your thumb and the trigger break is very crunchy. Other than that, it had a great double action pull for your first shots from the holster, and you could really hold all the slack out beautifully.
They took all of our advice and built a much better gun, the USP or "Ultimate Sidearm Pistol" .45 in response. The safety is also the decocking lever, it is ambidextrous, the gun is much more compact, lighter, and has no provision for the suppressor. It still has the rails in front, and will hold .. cough cough cough... the 12 round mag perfectly. (I've heard...)
I love the USP. So much so I bought one when it came out to shoot instead of the MK 23. I figured if it ever came down to me needing it in the field, the last thing I was going to be concerned about is answering to someone about a civilian weapon on my person.

Yeah, mine is the 22C. I like it because of the feel, but yeah, I should take that thing out and see what has less flash. What have you had luck with Kieth ? This gun cost a ton of dough but I like the fact its the FBI issue weapon. Is it true we can buy the larger clips out of state and bring them home ? I meant to go to some of the gun stores in AZ, but never had a chance.

I believe the G22 hi-cap mag is the largest capacity .40 cal mag that will fit the G22. If you don't have hi-caps, I would think that you can get them now...just be aware they will be spendy (>$100) if you get the drop free Glock mags.
As far as ammo, I carry Speer Gold Dot 185gr hollowpoints myself.
If any of you guys out there have not taken some kind of weapons training class, I would recommend the Front Sight 4-day defensive handgun class. Awesome thing to go through. Learn to draw from concealment and put rounds on target very quickly, with accuracy...teaches of "problems 2 & 3" - the civil and criminal survival after a shooting...scenarios...night shooting...weapons handling/safety, etc. You can find certificates on Ebay for around $100 or less, for first time students to take these $1200 classes! That's a great deal. The school is in Pahrump NV, just outside of Vegas.

It was a great experience for me. Just thought I'd pass that along.

I just checked out their site and ebay. What's the catch? Why would they allow somebody to sell the certificates so cheap on ebay when their classes cost so much?
