You haven't spent to much time at a car audio shop have you?
I worked for a car stereo shop in Denver about 6 years ago. I had people come in in Olds Delta 88's and Maximas that they spent about $600 on. They'd drop as much as 12K+ on their systems. And a couple K on their gold wire wheels.
I had one guy come in a Cadillac mid 70's. Floor pan behind the driver seat and passenger seat was completely rusted through. Rear corner panels were full of rust. He said he paid $300 for the car. We installed 3 15" Kicker Solo Barics w/ 1 1000 watt amp pushing each and also one capacitor to each amp. He bought a Premier P1 deck that was at the time one of the top of the line decks we sold it for something like $700. His whole set up cost about $5000. For his mids and highs he chose to use the factory 1970's 6x9's that were still in the rear deck and were completely wasted the surrounds were gone.
Some of the things that appeal to people simply amaze me.

Damn....I wonder of that thing generates downforce when it hits :D
You people need to get out more if you've never seen audio equipment that's easily double the value of the vehicle  :D

Isn't that one of those things from the mall that you put your quarter in and it spirals down to the bottom.

I think Courtney Love left her diaphragm in the back of somebody's hatchback
