Why does merc put the oil filters upside down? Seems like it would make a mess when changing the oil.

About 4 years ago, I stumbled onto a 38 Cig Top Gun with 850's that had
just been redone, my employer bought it as an investment at a good price.
I then drove it all summer until it sold. Nancy and I really miss that boat.
Oh sure, it ate some gas, but what a ride!

Why does merc put the oil filters upside down? Seems like it would make a mess when changing the oil.
Super super nice boat. I just wanna ride in one someday.
It does make a mess. I would think they would do something about it also. I was just told of a fitting (spacer) that goes between the filter and the bracket that has a valve you can open up to drain the filter before removal. I will be installing them on next oil change.

I think they call those Maxums. :D The big ones now are Meridian. :D

That is what I do now, but it still makes a mess with what sits in the bowl. I can catch it with rags, but it is still a pain. I am getting those valves and that should make it much easier.
