we have the same problem here. We have sign on the door and they come on in anyway.
We always ask them if they are selling glasses and if so they could use a pair.

I worked for a company that actually told us to target the "no solicitaion" stores. I hate that company and thats why I am not there anymore....I think it's b.s.

They usually assume that the no soliciting signs are on the doors of people who are easy sales...

I have a special voice mail set up for our person to deal with all unpleasantness or unsolicited sales. Its the person in charge of being in charge, we call him Rich O'shea or Ricochet. This bounches them around in endless voicemail hell, its funny cause the persistent ones once they get a name will call back saying that Rick or Rich wanted them to return his call. When the solictiors walk in, we have a phone on the reception counter and have the receptionist connect them to this voicemail, she can hear what they are saying and decide whether they have anything of value, without asking them what they are selling. Or if they truly do belong, and are just lost. :hammerhea

Our local pizza joint has a sign on the door that says, "Solicitors welcome. $10 per visit." Even though it's kind of humorous, it actually makes sense. When a salesperson comes in, the owner can say, "Please pay me $10 now" which I'm sure makes most leave. Some might believe they're such good salespeople that they might actually pay $10, in which case the owner can say, "OK, you have FIVE and ONLY FIVE minutes" -- if the owner listens to the pitch, he was still making $120/hour cash to listen. :)

Same here with the toner & steaks. What's up with door to door "Steak Salesmen"? Do people really buy this crap?

Funny stuff.
Up until a month ago I was one of those door to sales people. And when I wasn't knockin down doors I was ringing phones off the hook. As far as no soliciting signs go... Well, they are worthless. If an outside salesperson acknowledged a no soliciting sign they'd acknoweledge themselves right out of a job.
The Salesperson welcome $10 sign is brilliant. I'd walk in with a $20 bill in hand. When out cold calling in the field I ALWAYS had at least a $20 bill on me at all times. It's easy to say no to someone but when they bust out $20 and say "Look if I can't save you money I'll pay you $80 an hour for your time and since this is only going to take me 15 minutes to show you how much money I can save you heres the $20 to prove I'm serious." That always got peoples attention and got me a lot of business I only lost $40 in a year of outside sales :) Unfortunately the last company I worked for doing outside sales was run by a moron and now I'm working for an even bigger moron so what the hell maybe I'll be back out there bangin on doors soon.
