I went to look at a boat for sale, which is set up with a Mercruiser Jet Drive. This thing looks exactly like a Panther to me, but I have never before heard of a Mercruiser Jet. It's a model 400 drive, and appears to be a 1973 vintage unit. I already know all the pros and cons of the Panther drive, and the boat is not for me, but for a friend who may want to get involved in jetting. If there is anyone out there who has seen or heard of a Mercruiser jet drive, please let me know.
SteveM.

MerCruiser built jets for a short time during the mid 70's. It was really a nice package, but very expensive. They only came with 400HP 454 chevy and had built in adjustable nozzle for trim. The cover did make it look like the Pather, but it was a totally different. They where a mix flow design and the impeller could be removed with out breaking the seal at the back of the boat. I think all had stainless impellers, I could be wrong. The only boat I ever saw with one was an 18' Avenger tested by Trailer Boat magazine.

http://docksidemarineinc.net/Jet_Boats/jet_boats.html Here is a site so you can see what the Mercury jet looks like as far as I know thay make them from 90 to 220hp. I think that 220hp would go good in my 12foot jon boat!!

I could have sworn driving down to havasu this weekend, I saw a yamaha/seadoo boat with twin mercruiser jet drives, they had the modern mercruiser checkered flag and everything, looked like the real deal to me.

The only place I ever saw a Chrysler jet was on the back of one of their boats. Had a very strange steering, used what was known as the pinch system. Those 2 things that look like doors would close off one side of the jet stream causing the boat to turn. By closing off both the boat would back up. This pump was designed by the same guy that did the Panther, from the nozzle forward that are almost the same.
One other quick note regarding the Panther:
Panther Jet, Sidewinder Boats & Las Vegas Boats all had one thing in common. The same person started all.

Mexico was a problem. getting product back and forth accross the border and dealing with the local police.
Brent is still married to Dans daughter but they have split and getting a divorce http://free.***boat.net/ubb/frown.gif
Joe left Rex a few years ago and now works for Nordskog Performance.
Gene Racine was an innovator, never followed the others. always wanted to try someting new. He built direct drive v-bottom cruisers with 440 chryslers (24' sun chariot) back in the early 70's and started putting stern drives in by the mid 70's. Way befor any other company in So. Calif. The 24' cruiser with the wrap-around cabin window was a masterpiece! I learned alot from Gene. Gene sold his company to Hallett boats in the early 80's. Nick only built a few with the SKV name and than let it die. One of the original SKV employee still works at Hallett today.
I meet Rodger Weiman a long time ago. Is the shop still there in Bellflower?
Never road in a boat with the Chrysler drive.
Bruce did passaway about a year ago. Sleek Craft was sold long time ago. Bruce went to Havasu and started Conquest. The Conquest company was sold after his death and now called Group 1 marine. And yes, he did use a bottom mold for a duck pond in the back yard of the home he had in Hacienda Heights. It was not one his first; It was the bottom for the original 21' Jr. Exexcutive.I have a picture of it somewhere.
