SEATTLE - A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree manslaughter for fatally injuring a man by slugging him in the head with a skateboard.
33-year-old Demetri Andrews, of Renton, died in April of a brain injury, three days after a scuffle in Seattle's University District in which Timothy Strano hit him in the head with a skateboard.
King County prosecutors say they will ask that Strano serve 6-and-a-half years in prison when he is sentenced in February.
Prosecutors contended that Andrews scuffled with Strano and Strano's friend when they blocked his way as Andrews and his girlfriend were driving on University Way.

Timothy Strano gets 7 1/2 years for slamming man with skateboard
Timothy Strano was sentenced Friday to 7 1/2 years in prison for slamming Demetri Andrews in the back of the head with a skateboard last year, fatally injuring the 33-year-old Renton man, who died three days later.
In court, Strano heard from Andrews' family and friends, who talked about the kind, generous, joyous and creative son, father, fiance and friend he was.
And Strano learned that the more than 50 people who came to the hearing on Andrews' behalf feel cheated that he was allowed to plead guilty to manslaughter rather than murder.
``I feel like he has been murdered twice,'' Rothopi Andrews said of her eldest son. ``Once by him (Strano), then by the justice system. Instead of punishing the criminal, it punishes the victims in allowing him to commit a heinous murder and get away with it.''
Just before showing Superior Court Judge Steven Scott photos of her son, who died the day before his 34th birthday, Andrews said she had to bury him beside her first husband and that she would rather be lying there instead.
Matthew Parkinson, who met Andrews when the two were third-graders at Mercer View Elementary School and had been close friends with him since, said Strano ``wielded the skateboard over his head like an ax.'' He added that the result would have been no less certain ``if he had used a bat or a hammer.
``I don't understand how that's not murder,'' he said.
Strano, 23, hit Andrews in the head with a skateboard in Seattle's University District on April 9, 2002. Andrews had gotten out of his car to talk to Strano and another man when they blocked his way as Andrews and his fiancee were driving on University Way.
Andrews' fiancee also spoke, telling those present that she believed Strano even kicked Andrews once he was down. That brought a loud sob from Andrews' mother, who cried steadily throughout most of the hearing.
``I wanted to help him, but I felt stuck in my seat in the car,'' Aggeliki Barberopoulou said. ``And I did not know how I could help him if I got out of the car. These guys were very angry and very hostile.''
Andrews' younger brother, Vasili Andrews, also spoke about his loss.
``I feel as if I've lost half of my body in ways,'' he said.
Strano apologized for the crime, but appeared not to grasp the seriousness of what he had done.
``I do not have a way to explain to them,'' he said. ``We really wanted him to just get back in the car and leave us alone.''
After saying he didn't know why the crime occurred, Strano talked about the plans he has for when he gets out of prison.
Strano's attorney, Greg Girard, asked for a sentence of four years and two months, below the standard range of 6 1/2 to 8 1/2 years.
Senior Deputy Prosecutor Steve Fogg asked for 6 1/2 years.
But Judge Scott said neither of those would be fair or just because of Strano's actions and the suffering he caused.
The judge also mentioned that if the case had gone to trial, Strano might not be serving time at all, thanks to a recent ruling by the state Supreme Court.
Those who assault someone without intending to cause their death can no longer face felony murder charges.
That's the reason Strano was allowed the lesser plea.

I’ve been doing a little research.. I don think this is the same deal.. In the court hearings.. There was never a vid.. and all the witnesses said he was hit once in the back of the head..
If you watched it.. you know that didn’t happen and it was probably pretty obvious to the witnesses that it didn’t either..

Dude got pissed and tried to swing the board at my teacher....of course that was my teacher from AZ tactical combat :crossx: Had the little focker in a choke hold in the blink of an eye :p and none of his buddies wanted to step in...too funny :rolleyes:

These skateboarders are not he same bread we were in the 70's and early 80's. I had a run in with 5 skateboards. we are going to dinner and the little focker almost ran over my 6 year old son. Ok I let it go even after he tells me to get out of the way. Then the guy came into a dining establishment and stole a soda right infront of me. So as he exitted the door soda in hand i grabbed it from him. As he calls to his friends who come rushing over and attempt to get in my face and begin to make threats of violence towards me. i simply tell them in a calm voice leave now, before I hurt all five of you. Well that doesnt scare them as they raise their boards. Little did I know MRS kilr is behind me with some dining object. i tell them raisethat board any higher and you will die right where you stand. They left, little pricks, They were all 15 or so.......
the very next day the same group jumped a guy and broke a store window there......
