View Full Version : How Do You Run Your Boat???

Just curious, Lots of y'all have big power, superchargers, etc... in your boats. I look at the Dam run pics and it looks like everyone is running flat out all the time. Is that the cast. I run my (POS Prodution Boat) between 3,000 and 3,500 RPM's 98% of the time.

2440,
What is the story behind your boat. I saw your thread that said you missed your boat, and then a comment about it being on the bottom of the Ocean or it being stolen. So whats the real story?

Just a few (3-4) weeks ago. I remember it was a run to Catalina (sp?). 2440 was the depth where it sank.

The beauty of a boat with a big H.P. motor is the ability to cruise at higher speeds and lower RPM's. It is actually pretty rare for me to go past 5k RPM more than 2-3x a weekend. I run right at 70mph at 3500rpm. I was always taught that the best way to do it is to over build an engine and under drive it.

Exactlly the way I feel! I'd love to have a DCB F29 with HP 525's and cruise around all day at 70MPH without hurting anything.

50/50....and the reason the slow 50 is there is because I have a number of people aboard...those outboards love to rev till a prop breaks...

ELIMINAT THIS
12-02-2004, 08:35 AM
I cruise at 3500 to 4500 almost all day only take it 5800 to 6000 once or twice a trip. 6000 rpm soft touch rev. limiter when the boss is not in the boat.5000 rpm hard hit in the arm rev.limiter when she is in the boat. :hammerhea .I can't even slip 50 rpm past her.

I agree.. in most cases its not safe for me to run WOT for very long..
Im just curious what WOT is for different folks.. Like WOT for Bling is 170ish where for River Dave might be say.. 62mph..lol
So.. Whats your WOT? or is WOT just hit it to the floor till I let off.. is it the same as top speed?..

Well that is what the boat does for wide open. I know where the boat stops and how it feels when I am getting to the point. Once the needle stops moving or the boat stops accelerating, I am off the gas. Probably wide open for 10 seconds AT MAX. Slow roll into it and roll out of it. It has been great that way. The beauty of the motor is that at 3500 RPM I am only at 1lb of boost at 70mph. I can run all weekend without having to pull the boat out and refill the tanks. (80 gallons). Gets great gas milage when cruising, but open those butterflies and it sucks it down!

I want to agree with everything that BADBLOWN 572 said. Hit it when you
want to, keep after it for 10 or 12 seconds and ease out of it and back to 4000. I've found that my motors last about 100 times longer than when I
used to "leg" it all the time. The gas deal is bad here too. I can go from
Havasu to Topock, down to the Palms, Steamboat and never get on it and
say goodbye to 65 gallons. Oh well, it's worth it!

Here are some stats from another Allison.
The SS 2000 SuperSport, four years in the making, is designed to be the most efficient boat in the world. Independent tests reveal “an un-heard-of fuel mileage of 12.8 mpg, and over 10 mpg at 60 mph.” With triple the gas mileage, higher speeds, quicker acceleration, better rough water ride and handling, and incomparable durability . . .
I'm not getting 10 but I never go just 60 either!!!

With the family in the boat I'll cruise at 3500-4500 rpm's which keeps her between 50mph and the low 60's.
Without kids, I'll bump it up to WOT here and there ;) That'll put me between 73-76mph @ 5000rpm. For a 25' open bow, that's good enough for me (usually  ).
I'm kinda gentle on the boat. I never hit it hard from a dead stop. Always rolling the throttle.

Are you saying that 3,500 rpm's gets you 50mph? Sounds pretty good. The best cruising boat I have owned was a 1989 Pachanga 22 with a 7.4 and an alpha drive. 3,000rpm's and 53 mph. Of course that was not GPS that is BSS :D
