Pulling a travel trailer

Does anyone know if I can tow a 36 ft trailer with a Z-71 Suburban?
Want to make sure I'll be safe.

Seems awful big for a half ton sub. What is the weight of the trailer? I personally wouldn't attempt that without at minimum a 3/4 ton.

...you have the wheel base for sure, just check the weight of what you are pulling along with the weight of the vehicle capacity. I would say your only issue would be with the hitch and the capacity of it...if anything you would have to move up to a different class hitch assembly (assuming you have a stock one now) to a higher class, whatever that may be.

No way in hell a 36 foot travel trailer is gonna be light enough for you to tow with your Suburban. Unless it is a 3/4 ton or bigger there is no way. The dealer shouldn't even let you take it home with a 1/2 ton truck. :supp: :smile:

I think the deciding factor is weight, not length. The late model trailers are considerably lighter than the older ones. A good quality anti-sway system, along with a properly applied braking system, and of course a measure of caution in the wind, and you should be okay. Tongue weight, and hitch limitations must be followed. I think you may be cutting the life expectancy of the vehicle, and the transmission guidelines for towing should be followed.(towing in Overdrive, etc.)..........As with any towing, give yourself that extra margin for safety................MP

Its not the towing its the controling and braking !!!
My '70 Mustang would tow it but thats it.

I have towed a lot of trailers that I shouldn't have. Electric brakes is a must and a weight distributing hitch also. But 38' tow trailer is not a good idea with a 1/2 ton burb. It would be slow going up hill and fast going down.

I tow a 23' toybox with my 1/2 ton f-150 with a weight of about 7500lbs and it is a handful. Its not just 1 thing thats a factor its all ( suspension, brakes and motor). I need a diesel just like you do.

460 is better than that V10 of theirs. I pulled my trailer with a friends v-10 and my 454 out tows it. That duramax will beat the hell out of my truck.

If anybody out there is inclined to tow 12k w/a 1/2 ton 'Burb, yes, it will move it in a forward direction, no it won't stop it, and yes it will smoke the trans. No worries, I have them in stock :D

You forgot to mention, make sure your health insurance is paid up. I wouldn't worry about your vehicle insurance, because, in the event you need it, they're going to look at your rig and the trailer you had behind it and deny your claim anyway. :( :cool:

Well, since we are on this subject, anyone know the rules on pulling a triple set up in Arizona.
I really don't want to buy a camper, so I'm looking at buying a small 5th wheel (24 foot range) and pulling the boat (an 18' flat) behind that. The boat trailer has surge brakes.
I'll be using my Toyota to pull all this with....

Well, since we are on this subject, anyone know the rules on pulling a triple set up in Arizona.
The first trailer has to be 5th wheel or gooseneck. I believe it also has to have brakes. The overall length of the entire rig has to be under 65' I think. Other than that, it's standard trailer stuff with the lights, etc.

No CDL requirement if you're in a pickup.
Here is the information from the Arizona Revised Statutes:
28-1095. Vehicle length; exceptions; permits; rules; definition
(G)
3. A recreational vehicle may pull two units if all of the following conditions are met:
(a) The middle unit is equipped with a fifth wheel and brakes and has a weight equal to or greater than the rear unit.
(b) If the rear unit has a gross weight of three thousand pounds or more, it is equipped with brakes.
(c) The total combined gross weight of the towed units does not exceed the manufacturer's stated gross vehicle weight of the towing unit.
H. For purposes of this section, "recreational vehicle" means a motor vehicle that is designed and customarily used for private pleasure, including vehicles commonly called motor homes, pickup trucks with campers and pickup trucks with a fifth wheel trailing device.

i tow a 30ft toy hauler about 10k with gear with my 02 excursion V10 2wd with airbags,load dist,sway bars etc,,,,,,im maxed out,can be scary at times,,,also the tranny in your truck wont last long
