I think you need at least a 50 IQ.
Parker people do not usually qualify.

In order to buy a handgun in ca. you need to take a handgun safety test. I think it costs about $25 to take it. After you get that you can purchase a handgun. I think most gun shops offer the test and it is an easy no brainer kind of a test. Also I believe the wait is only 10 days. At least thats what it was the last time I bought a handgun.

If you have served in the armed forces all you need is your DD214 and the safety course is waved. You must still go through the background check and the waiting period....... MP

The test here is Kali is pretty no nonsense. I took it a few months ago. I think its 25-30 questions. Got em all right and I'm no Enstien. See, I can't even spell. :D You can buy more than one handgun with a single permit but only one gun every 30 days. Bought a used Glock .40 cal. They didn't tell me about the DD214 exemption.

I say check out the S&W 99. Comes in a few calibers. I got the 40. I love it. Smooth and straight ;) The composit bottom is made by Walther and the top slide and components are by Smith & Wesson.
Or if you want to get all euro then get the Walther P99. Same gun but no S&W top slide :shift:

I carry a Taurus PT-145, excellent gun for the money. DAO though, next time I'm going to get a DA/SA, probably a compact Para-Ordinance or the like.

The USP 40 is the only way to go. I had a Glock 22 (40 cal) and a sig 228 right before I got the HK and it is one of the best guns I have ever shot. Cant go wrong with an HK. Check out Gunsamerica.com Sometimes gun stores go on there and offer killer deals. Worth checking out.

Sig 226 is the way to go.
In CA. be sure to learn the regs. If you get caught transporting in an unapproved manner, bye bye baby. The gestapo gets to confinscate, and you'll never get it back, Arnold or no Arnold.

what are you planning on using it for? are able to get a permit to carry?
if so i like the s&w J frame .357 mag. 1 7/8" barrel internal hammer 5 shot revolver scandium metal frame titanium cylinder makes it very light just throw it in your pocket, grab it and start pulling the trigger no safety's to worry about, very safe and the .357 with federal hydra shock's will stop any ill intentions.
for just shooting around for semi auto's i like the kimber's as for revolvers i like my colt python.

I prefer Sigs, all of them. I personally can't stand the grip on the HK, even with the Hogue slip-on sleeve. You can save some dollars by odering from out of state and having it shipped to a local FFL dealer, pawn shops are a good option. I have ordered from On Point Firearms and Sporting Arms with great success. You won't pay sales tax and the prices are much less than local dealers. Make sure that the gun you want is on the approved CA firearm list.

I would also recommend a nice little book titled "Own a Gun and Stay Out Of Jail"...... ;) You should be able to find the book at a Turners or any larger gun store. Once you've read that make sure you fully understand Cali's laws as they are more stringent then the Federal laws.
I've actually lost a handgun that I was carrying LEGALLY but since the CHP officer didn't understand the law, he wrote me up for misdimeaner CCW and confiscated the gun. The judge also didn't understand the law!! Finally the Prosecutor had to get the law book out and read the law to the judge, who still didn't give me my gun back even after he begrudgingly dropped the charges.
It would be best to avoid these types of situations....:supp:

Before listening to us, try finding a range that will rent firearms to you. Put 20-50 rounds through each one. Try practicing "mag drops" and reloading with each as well. If you are serious about self defense using a firearm PRACTICE often or buy one of these and practice once in a while. :D http://www.wilsoncombat.com/images/product/SPRO-A_side_saddle.jpg

This subject sparked a question. If the Federal law says I can own a Ca. banned gun would'nt I have a appeal to a federal court if they (CA.) were to take it away? Kinda like the Gay marrage or legal pot issue in Ca. Should'nt federal law superceed Ca law?

Federal law only superceeds if the local law is LESS STRINGENT. In this case local laws are way tighter then Federal Laws so there's no issue of jurisdiction. Feds aren't going to force local laws to be more lenient......
In the other cases like gay marriage or medical marijuana the local laws are going against Federal laws so there's a bit of a difference.

Like mirvin said .357 revolver is the way to go.no worry of a jam(all autos can jam no matter the brand)no fire just pull the trigger again.Another you can use 38 special for fun shooting since they are cheaper than .357 just not as powerful but any 38 special can be shot in .357 mag.
As for autos i am a 1911 guy.those are what i used for competiton they are flawless and i'll put them up against any other hi capacity auto anytime, day, place.but i can agree the hk is a nice weapon if i were to buy any non 1911 type double action auto the hk would be it.

If your talkin' revolvers get a 454 Casull. One shot, that's all it will take! Otherwise I like my FN Five-Seven very much, but you have to get the good ammo which I don't think is Legal in CA.

what about the cost of rounds if im going to be shooting it all the time is there a big difference between 9mm and 40cal or 357.

what about the cost of rounds if im going to be shooting it all the time is there a big difference between 9mm and 40cal or 357.9mm will probably be the cheapest with .40 and .357 running about the same.if you buy from a big5,wal mart ,k mart you will pay premium. If you buy from turners and find the ammo on sale(goes on sale all the time) probably less than 10 bucks per 50rounds.as low as 5-6 bucks for the 9mm on sale.

Plus the shooting ranges usually have "reloads" for very cheep. Good enough for plunking at the range IMO.

I purchased my Sig Pro right when they came out for $450. They now sell for over $550 at Turners and other gun shops.
I searched google and found this great deal on the Sig Pro:
