Is it just me or does $63,585 seem like a lot of dough for a built 502?!?
For more than what most people pay for their entire boat, you do get 600HP, 625 ft lbs of torque, a Lysholm screw type blower from Sweden that runs at 6 lbs of boost....oil cooler, intercooler, and 5200 rpm.
Oh yeah, and it comes in blue...

Normally, Merc quotes the price of the package: Motor, drive, gimble, etc, the whole package. IF this is the case, thats a great price. But I did go back and read the story again, and it wasn't clear what was included...

I keep trying to tell you guys Mercruiser sucks, no one listens. There are several independant motor builders who will stand behind there motors at fractions of what the big boys charge. Seriously, F these chumps.

A Whippled 525 putting out close to 720+HP will crush that new motor for far less money, running on no more than 91 octane. There is a certain boat manufacturer that will have a NEW 30+ footer at the L.A. Boat show with (2) of these 600's all rigged up. I am sure it will look and run great, but a ton of $$ !

In the January issue of Hot Boat there is that 630HP engine build up for under $9,000. For that price you could blow up seven of them for the price of one of the Mercs. :crossx:

Nice looking piece of hardware. I still think I'd take the 496HO and a brand new custom 21 foot boat to go with it for less $$....I couldn't justify it, but I know it is just a matter of steps and financial where with all.....

63K CANT be correct....TCM is even cheaper/less expensive then that. If I remember right isnt a 525 PACKAGE with an XR drive mid to high 30K's...this cant be twice as expensive....

I'm putting that engine in my new boat, it wasn't even close to that price as an extra but it was 3,000 more than a Teague 800. You have to admit it looks cool :jawdrop:

NashvilleBound
01-14-2005, 05:29 AM
The 600 is SOO ridiculously priced. The Ilmor/Teague or the 525 is only $40k. I think Merc has some real competition on their hands...the way it should be!

Yep, I about fell over when I saw the price too!
I can dig out an old Donovan block and build a 706" all aluminum
beast for that much and have a bunch of spare parts just in case....
They can keep their fuel injected, pink anti-freeze pukin', too complicated
to work on junk. :yuk:
At least the spark plug wires match...sort of!

For $63K, it better come with a #6 drive. :hammer2:

Trigger
01-14-2005, 06:21 AM
$63k is not the correct price. You will not pay that much for it if you go to buy it. Plus the prices they give are inclusive of the drive. The new XR drive plus blower motor with warranty for a price much less than $63k. Expensive? Yes. But sometimes you get what you pay for.

Since almost all of that motor uses off-the-shelf parts, I think it would be interesting to give that recipe to GT or Phaff and see what price they quote you with a warranty.
As for the XR...just buy one separately- they are all over the place.

I believe that RETAIL PRICE on the merc 575 with an XR drive was around $55k.. $60k for the new 600 is a lot of money, but that's the retail price for the motor, drive, accessories, merc warranty, and blue paint... Nobody pays retail, right?? For most boats, resale is going to be better with a "stock" blue motor as compared to a custom motor.

how much discount do these after market engine builders give to the OEM's? will they give at least 30/40% off to eliminator, DCB, elite, etc, include warrantee and extensive factory back-up, prop selection, a drive system which mates up, and many, many books on maintence, installation, trouble shooting. If these prices quoted are so out of line, what keeps Brunswick in business. who can build thousands upon thousands of engine/drive packages and support distribution, dealers and so many boat manufactuors.
You can't expect the end-user (you) to get everything at cost do you. there has to be substantial difference between retail and user price or the entire distribution/manufacturer loop collapses. (obviously, no spell check)

I would never expect to get a motor/drive combo at OEM prices.....the boat manufacturers need to make money somewhere...I mean, they dont make anything on the hull ;)

FYI
Mercury has not establlished a retail cost for the 600 SCI / XR package yet. It will probably be somewhere around $63,000.00, based on dealer cost. This is for a complete package with a low water pickup XR drive. Allthough very expensive, things like CMI headers, supercharger, electronic fuel injection, warranty, etc., certainly add up quick.
It is very easy to make much more power with a lot more CI for the same price.....

But if no one pays that then why predispose us to believe that their products are overpriced?

Whipped, by the time you add #6 dry sump, gimble assy, headers, mufflers, harness, etc, you'ed be close to Merc's 1050 pkg, prox $155,000 right? How about warrantee, factory support, factory trained dealer service, first rebuild, etc. theres no free lunch

I have that motor (with a #6) at $77K. I guess that means you can have two of those for the price of a Merc 1050.
My last motor I built was one third the cost of the blue paint. Although I could have had three bullets in the gun, I didn't need them.
Sounds like a free lunch to me...

Well all the above is very interesting. If Nordic Rig is correct, the 600SCi with drive package listed by Merc for $63K, nets Nordic $42K, this would indicate that Merc give about a 33% discount to their larger boat mfgrs. Wonder what the custom builders get who only build 10 or 12 boats per year as compared to the biggies like Fountain, Formula, Sea Ray and yes, the bay word...
