Old School OMC drive with it's 80 degree tilt angle; it only tilted up or down - the trim was a screw drive mounted to the front of the engine;would move it a degree or 2 - THE WHOLE MOTOR!

some day, and I have said this for many some days, I will go through all my old pics and see if I have any left from the family boat drags at Bluewater. Late 70's towed up from Yuma to play. Had a buddy with a red metalflake tunnel, can't remember the make, had a merc whacker on the back. When he would go, the rescue boats would go ahead and start up. This thing was out of the water most of the time. Insane to watch. Might have been a Sterling hull, does that sound right to anybody? :supp:

The (Yuma) Sheriff boat was a Biesmeyer Whaler.
And no, that's not me. Back in those days I was wearing {Coast Guard) Blue, not the SO Tan.
The Deputy there looks remarkably similar to our current (Elected) Sheriff. He was running the boat back then.
I'll have to print out copies of the pictures and ask him if he remembers it.

That was it, float out there in the current until they waved you back. lol
Boatcop, when YCSO first started patrolling down in Yuma they had a Datsun jet boat I recall. Don't remember how long that lasted. Not very fast, but the radio was. lol
Bad part about the early drags at Bluewater, not much safety patrol at the time. We used to get free entry to keep the top end closed off, but that didn't always work real well with shall we say, overindulged boaters? Also saw a few wrecks that proved fatal probably because lack of qualified rescue. Kind of like run whatcha brung, and hope you brung enough.

Usuual for boats to sink like that?Back then?
Shit go to Parker on any Holiday/Busy weekend and a good chance you will see atleast one boat sink. Not uncommon to see 2 boats sink in a weekend.

No lake lice! How great is that?
This is about when the lake lice started. I remember someone bringing one out from the factory & letting almost anyone ride it. We always stayed at Big Bend. My brother-inlaw had a Black Eliminator with a Keith Black 427ci. V-drive. We almost sunk it every time it went out. The river was always packed until they started rationing gas & you could only buy it on odd or even days depending on your license plate number. Back when helmets, seatbelts, child car seats & riding in the back of the truck all the way to the river was your choice.

I remember those days :jawdrop: We used to tow up from Yuma also, to Parker, and then to Havasu when the bridge was being built. Have lots of old pics of that also.

Actually I think it was abnormal for there NOT to be a sinking. There is a really cool article in Hot Boat Magazine (yes there is a magazine) about a boat sinking on its Maiden voyage out there, was the King of the water back in its day, it sank in the 70's....they found it in the 80's by accident and it was in pretty damn good shape. The original owners never could find it. Stuck transom down, in the mud - for all that time. One of my favorite articles ever......
Thanks for the pics!

You know what's funny........NONE of the people in those pictures seem to be complaining about how loud those over the transom headers are. :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :D Damn if only the river was still like that, except for the long hair and the bathing suits. LMAO :D

no Problemo! I sure miss the river, but since about 1995, it has been getting really bad. Me and my dad went out over Spring Break 1998 to do some fishing and I was surprised at how many people were not out there! That was the last time I was out there as I moved up here in July 1998.

The 'rough water' is the large rocks on the bottom there. We would start at the bottom of Red Rock and race up to the pole at Fox's (almost a 1/4 mile). Durring shut down you had about 4 boat lengths of good water before you hit the 'rough stuff'. Every Saturday around 4 PM. That original dock was a great place to "ski off of" back when "skiing was cool". Lot's of 'dynomite!' 19 and 20 year old (legal) "chicks" back then, well on the AZ. side. Was that a Sanger hydro that swamped? I remember back in 1975 at Fox's, a boat named "Sanger-Bang'r" (flat) lost an 'ear' and split the boat in half and the driver got hurt, right there in front of everyone. Also a friend (and customer) barefoot skied behind an airplane and a flat boat for the TV show, "You asked for it" His name is the same as 'Info's' He made a poster of his 'footin', almost as famous as the "ups and downs" poster. Yes, I do you think the 'long hair' made the boats more quiet.

Used to do that all the time. I pretty much lived at Parker in the summers during the 70's. Float from the dam down to the Californian (now a memory). There were no 30ft cats to worry about nor any PWC's other than a few early jet skis. A big boat was a 24 and 21's were just getting popular.
Remember when the Rock Palace and Buckskin and the Keys were brand new. And Bluewater... well wasn't like it is now :frown: For the most part I like what the river was then and less what it's become now. But that's progress. :hammerhea

I used to go to Parker with my cousins in the 70's, my uncle had a Green and white 21' Campbell with big block Olds and a velvet drive. I can remember on numerous times seeing interior pieces floating down the river then see the bow of the boat sticking out of the water a couple hundred of feet behind them. Back then you could ski all day long on mostly flat water, and Bluewater just had those concrete garage / cabana thingys and concrete grandstands built into the side of the hill.
Those days are gone.

Hey Mike, it might be easier to scan the negatives and have them on your computer. Let me know if you are interested, I might be able to help.

I'd actually prefer them scanned, but my scanner won't do negatives. The down side is, my ex-wife is in a lot of the pics, but there are quite a few (as I remember) from Bluewater, Sundance, and Buckskin. I'd like to see them again to remember what it looked like WITHOUT a casino. Anyone remember the pool tables at the bar at Bluewater Marina? I may even have a few Parker 400 shots in there (used to race desert when I was younger).

Also -- I had a bunch of color slides from 1970 too. What I did was bought one of those small, lighted slide viewers, then took a pic of the screen! You won't believe it but it worked really great!
