I just rebuilt jet, Berk JC, new A Aggressor impeller, with 460 Ford, stock with 750 carb. Now turning 3900 rpm after rebuild. I think I'd like to turn 4800 and stay on reg. gas. Where do I start? Have seen much advice on timing and carbs., but would appreciate a little more theory behind the advice. Will be skiing in Florida in 90 degree heat with 90% humidity. Does it make any sense to try to buy a junkyard engine with fuel injection already on it? Thanks.

something wrong here!A 460 with a new pump rebuild ,"A" impeller should turn 4750-4800 RPM minimum, more with higher HP.The 750 carb is OK,but I would use the marine Holley 850 with the J tubes to be coastguard approved.88 size primary jets,94 secondaries and 6.5 powervalves.Barbron unrestricted flame arrestor for clean airflow.Timing can be set at 10 degree inital,36 degree total by 3000 RPM with the flyweights fully extended.A mild 460 produces 320 HP/500footpound torque on regular fuel.Upgraded 460's with better heads can easily turn over 5300RPM with an "A" imp.

Thanks Spectras. I have Hardin marine package. I saw your reply to an earlier question state, "Hardin factory specs. 10 degrees at idle, but ignore that and set max 36 degrees at 3000 rpm." I was just curious what your theory is behind that. What does it accomplish? Thanks.

SB,you mentioned that you want to run on regular gas ,so it's out of question to advance your timing beyond the safe setting that is max 36degrees for the 460 .These engines have a tendency for difficult starting after a hot run and bumping the timing would make it even harder. You can't buy real premium fuel on the water,so running the risk of detonation is great if you have over 9.3:1 compression ratio. If you have a stock 460,it more likely has 8.5:1 comp that you can run on regular all day long with the afformentioned setting [36degree max].

Thanks. I've decided to build at least one engine with some more power. For now let's assume 400-450 hp. to turn 4800-5000 rpm. I may keep the old tired one as a spare. I need the parts numbers for the heads, etc. and where to get them. I would like to look at some junkyard engines and old car engines. Can anyone give me the serial #s etc. that I need to look for to distinguish the high performance car engine? Which cars had them, in which years?

look for head casting # DOVE-C,it's a 429 head mated to match either 460 or 429 blocks. It will give you 9.3:1 compression ratio on a 460 block. There are 3 different deck heights for blocks,so match them with proper pistons for clearence.1968-1970 Lincoln Mark III 's had this had, also 429 Mustangs and Torino's.

Thanks. Anyone know where I can get serial numbers so if I'm looking at an engine at a junkyard I can tell what it is?

Look for a book called Ford Performance. Most of the big name book stores carry it. It should have the casting numbers for the performance 429/460 engines.

C8VE-E's are the same as DOVE heads. Look for 68-71 429's. They came in every kind of big Ford car. T-bird, Torino, LTD, etc. Most of these motors were factory rated(conservatively, rear wheel) @375 or more hp. That means over 400 @the flywheel. Stock. Pocket port the heads, remove the thermactor knobs, big cam, these motors make gut twisting torque AND hp. And you can spin a BB Ford all day @6000 rpm. Have you seen the size of the mains? Gargantuan! Well, you need to have the rotating assy. balanced. But, to keep it kinda short. Late 60's, early 70's 429 heads make sick power on a 460. Hey SB, where you at? I got a set of DOVE-C heads I might unload. Or I'll be happy to port(I can get over 300 cfm) the hell outta some 429 heads for a case of beer! Catch you later!

Thanks. I'm in Florida, middle of East Coast. Interested in heads. If anyone has Ford parts or 460 engine for sale, email at attbiggins@aol.com. Not sure if I want to go from 460 to 429, thinking I'll stay fairly conservative with cam to save gas.
