We had the kids out of school last week for a ski trip to Mammoth......lots of fun, but homework is plentiful....
Remember chemistry? In the formula to make Iron Oxide (rust), one of the questions asks about the number of atoms.
Iron + Oxygen = Rust
4Fe + 3O2 ---------> 2Fe2O3
How many atoms of iron did we start with? Is it one or four? :confused:
Why is the (4) in front of the Fe? I assume you need 4Fe and 3O to get the oxide, but does that effect the number of atoms?

Thanks!!! Been a long time since I studied this stuff..... :hammerhea

You started with 4 atoms of Iron (Fe) and 6 atoms of Oxygen---3 molecules of O2
The iron oxide results with 2 bigger molecules in the end.
(Took Chem 101 recently)

I almost failed chemistry... and not for lack of trying. The only reason I passed was I B.S.ed my way through a term paper.
Sleek <--------- waiting for the answer also.

Thanks for the reply... How many atoms of iron did we end with in the rust formula....the same amount, yes? 4, just allocated differently now...?

Right. You're always going to end up with the same amount in the end, just in a different configuration. Now you have 2 molecules with Fe2 in them. If you leave out the letters and only use the numbers it's a lot easier to see the relationship
for example:
4(Fe) + 3(O2) ---------> 2(Fe2+O3)
4 + 3(2) = 2 (2+3)
That's how you check it to make sure you did it right.

Oh wow! I couldn't even answer these questions if I had 4 lifelines. I hate science. MMSW <---- smarty pants :) .
