She's doing a project on Medieval times. Part of it is she needs to interview someone about the coffee in that era.
This is from her:
I am a 7th grade student at Altimira Middle School and I am doing a history project on Medieval coffee. I need to interview somenone about it. Here's the questions I have written up to get answers to.
Where were the plants grown?
How were the coffee beans grounded up?
Was the coffee strong?
Did everyone drink coffee or was it mostly for the rich?
Was coffee used as a form of money?
Was coffee used as a medicine?
Was there any other uses for coffee other than drinking?
What is your name? (I need to show who answered the questions)
Do you drink coffee often?
Thank you!
Ashley Cas

You should check with GoFastRacer in the v-drive forum or on HavasuDoug.com. He probably remembers that kind of stuff first hand. :D
p.s. Sorry Art. :D

Coffee although available in the Middle East was not a common drink in Europe until the late 1500's and then it was to expensive for common use.
So some clarification is needed. Exactly when and where are we taking about?

GoFastRacer is on all the forums at Dougs's, not just the v-drive one!! :D
Wish I could help. Anything I would say would be purely conjecture but I'm pretty sure it was originally grown in the moutainous areas of France and Italy. During medieval times, they weren't doing a lot of trade into other areas, so they probably didn't get any from Africa. I'm also pretty sure that it was only for the wealthy as a novelty. It probably tasted about like starschmucks coffee, like burnt dirt.

He spends very little time in the Sandbar and wouldn't see this unless it was posted in the v-drive tech here or on Havasu Doug. ;)

Looking for something like this?
Prior to 1000 AD: Members of the Galla tribe inEthiopia notice that they get an energy boost when they eat a certain berry, ground up and mixed with animal fat.
1000 AD: Arab traders bring coffee back to theirhomeland and cultivate the plant for the first time on plantations. Theyalso began to boil the beans, creating a drink they call "qahwa"(literally, that which prevents sleep).
1453: Coffee is introduced to Constantinople byOttoman Turks. The world's first coffee shop, Kiva Han, open there in 1475.Turkish law makes it legal for a woman to divorce her husband if he failto provide her with her daily quota of coffee.
Getting past the middle ages...
1511: Khair Beg, the corrupt governor of Mecca, tries to ban coffee for feat that its influence might foster oppositionto his rule. The sultan sends word that coffee is sacred and has the governorexecuted.
1529: The Turkish Army surrounds Vienna. FranzGeorg Kolschitzky, a Viennese who had lived in Turkey, slips through theenemy lines to lead relief forces to the city. The fleeing Turks leavebehind sacks of "dry black fodder" that Kolschitzky recognisesas coffee. He claims it as his reward and opens central Europe's firstcoffee house. He also establishes the habit of refining the brew by filteringout the grounds, sweetening it, and adding a dash of milk.

Ah, lo siento. I should spend less time posting and more time reading accurately.

clarification...hmmmmm......well, there's not much info on the net about coffee in that era. I believe she's studying the 12th, 13th or 14th centuries?

Freak,
yep, that's some pretty good stuff. According to Ashley, it has to be in more of an interview type format. Sure would have been easier if I was swinging a sword instead of drinking coffee the morning she decided to pick her topic :D

Right I just wanted to make sure she wanted to cover the complete middle ages. That could be a lot of coverage for 7th grade. A basic overview or what ever for all continents?

Deano,
Thanks a bunch! I spoke with your brother earlier today....real nice guy! He suggested my daughter email him the questions and he'd answer them the best he could. When my daughter went to his website, my son got all excited and he amailed David some questions about the armor. My kids are twins and have the same history teacher.
The only problem with this whole thing, it may cost me some money as my kids want bracers....I'm kind of nervous to ask how much :D
thanks again for the hook-up!

thanks to everyone else that threw out some suggestions and website links. I'm sure the kids will be using a couple of them over the next few days.
