View Full Version : What do you consider family boat?

Just curious, a lot of people say they bought a family boat, but when I see pics of some (i.e... no swim step, possible kids jumping off back into drive, or 100mph runner) Or no room to really move around in cockpit. Now, I know opinions are like ........ so I'm looking for more on what type of features one considers or looks for in a "Family" boat.

Well ... as you said ... just like opinions are like a**holes, the opinion of a family boat will vary.
I figure that my drag boat is a family boat. I get more family time drag boat racing w/ my 2 kids than I ever did when we went to the river.
I now get 3-4 days w/ my kids around instead of asking friends to take turns to stay and watch all of the kids for a couple of hours as we went for runs up and down the river.
So, in our case ... a "Family Boat" has turned out to be a Drag Hydro.
Have fun,
BB

What I consider a great family boat has an open bow with cuddy section so the kids have a place to rest out of the sun. Our last two boats have also included a TV/dvd system. I prefer a V bottom for more free board. For dad, he gets to chose engine package!! Check out www.sleekcraft.com they have many different lenghts to choose from with this set up. I have owned A 24',26',28' and now have a 34' Heritage with twin 496HOs. TW

Family Boat , has very little to do with the second word, and everything to do with the first.

We all have our own definitions I dont think its the type of boat one may have, its how they enjoy it. For me its what i use to enjoy my weekends and vacations with my family. Thats the reason I got it. Its sort of a tool to increase our "Quality Time" together.

Ian, in your flat boat.... the motor is too far back to go fast! I would not kid you! Get with someone who knows, and you will fix it. "Can you say, 36"?" "I knew you could".

I think it depends on where you boat and what size also. If you ocean boat then a BIG "V", if you lake boat then for sure (my 2 cents) a deck boat, my choice was Magic and its a pleasure to get on it, be in it, drive it but not cleaning it!! Good luck :2purples: :2purples: NSF PS Make that a cat for sure!!!

Thanks for the advice, but the boat ran 107 with a tired motor and takes a perfect set. We'll see what happens this year with the new motor, if it doesn't set right with the new motor I'll consider making some changes. Keep in mind the position of the motor has a lot to do with the hull, and this is an ex top fuel boat that was set-up by Norm Grimes back in the day. YOu know waht they say, if ain't broke don't fix it!

my old schiada flat was a great family boat...when the kids were small we'd take it to piru, float around, have lunch, and wifey would read a book on the deck. the kids could idle it in the coves....
it's what you make it

Yep, maybe it's an epidemic that could be solved by banning marriage altogether...
Interesting that a recent study showed that in Sacramento in some recent year (2001 I think) 8.7 of 10 marriages ended in divorce. Now that's scary.

One where the kids can truly play hide-n-go-seek :D :D (i.e., a yacht!)
I think my 25' open bow with a mid cuddy is right on target though. ;) Even though I have a swim step, the kids (and especially their friends) have to be aware of the outdrive at all times. I'm always reminding them about not flailing their arms and legs when they're behind the boat.
