A youngster I know needs a motocross bike. I don't know anything about motocross, to say the least.
What's the bike to have these days in the 85cc size for a 12 year old? Is 2 stroke still the best choice?

Depends on his size and ability. It really depends on his ability and what he is used too. My older son 11 rides a KX85 and my younger son rides a KX65, they tend to stay green even after the KX65.
I told him that the next bike was going to be a Honda or Yamaha, but then I ride a YZ250. Hard to teach old dogs new tricks.
Where does he ride? If trail riding a four stroke is a better bet due to the low end and consistent power, as a two stroke definitely has powerband especially in the 80's. They are wide open or slow, there is no inbetween.

Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki all make bikes in that size range. How old is he? Suzuki makes a RM 100 thats a pretty nice little bike for kids.

My 12 yr son old rides a Honda XR100, another nice bike my daughter rides is the Yamaha TTR125. These are 4 strokes we go desert riding.

Yamaha TTR125 is what I ride and love it.
Also the Honda XR100? :wink:

If you're in CA, check out the registration rules.
Just bought a '05 YZ 85 (2 stroke) for the G/F and found out it
only can be registered with a "red off-road sticker".
This means there are only a few areas where she can ride
between May 1, & Oct. 1. :cry:
I think 2003 & earlier came with the "green sticker".

4 stroke,
And bigger is better.
Don't buy too small.
I'd say 175+ is the going size in this neighbothood for that age
