Hmmmm..... If < $20K is the budget you should probably consider changing your wish list a little. Perhaps the list should read like this.....
What's Best BOAT for < $20K OUT THE DOOR?????
Needs to: Have a bow, any power pkg, small block or 15HP wacker, Bravo drive not needed, smells like a porta potti, v berth, trim tabs not functional, swim platform barely hanging on by two bolts, perfer stand up steating ie: no seats at all, Must have a good resale value, 1970 or newer, greater than 21 feet in length. I searched boattrader.com for Type: "Power", Category: "High Performance", price range of $15,000-20,000, and length of 22 to 29'.
66 boats came up...so much for your goal being BS! There are plenty of nice boats out there for $20k or less.
Here's some of the ones that caught my eye:
1988 Baja 240 - $15k (http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/3/2/83900732.htm)

The 28 foot Mach 1 and the 28 foot Scarab looks like good deals. The drive there would suck, but the drive home with one of those in the rear view would be ok.

I really, really like the looks of the Mach 1, but would have to ditch the red interior an put in light tan instead. The Scarab is a great deal considering the fresh 502 power.

I don't know anything about it but that Mach 1 has been for sale probably about 5 maybe 6 months. Might make em a low offer. Never know.

If I was in your shoes. I back up a few steps. There are always plenty of options. Your primary goals with a purchase for that sum of money is motor and the hull. If you are wanting to get a performance type of boat you will have to consider get an older boat. If its a family type of boat your thinking about, then your options broaden.
I would try to get more bang for your buck and stay away from dealerships and find a boat from a private seller. But be sure to do your homework on the boat.
But back to your question about being the best out the door for 20 grand? What type of boat do you want and where are you going to use it.

I like 502's, so here's a few more (all with 502's) to check out:
1991 Formula 242LS - $19.9k (http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/3/8/83511738.htm)
1988 Checkmate Convincer 25' - $20k (looks much newer...) (http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/9/8/81256498.htm)
1991 Baja 226 Bandit 22' - $20k (aluminum heads, stainless headers - 80mph?) (http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/9/1/10209391.htm)
1989 Sea Ray Pachanga 22 - $16k (http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/2/4/83764024.htm)
1997 Crownline 2660 27' - $16.6 (bowrider, but big and nice!) (http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/5/8/80927558.htm)
???? Eliminator Tunnel-V - $18k (http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/6/7/83788767.htm)
1993 Lavey Craft 23' - $19.5 (http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/8/1/83825481.htm)
1989 Aerotek Super V24 - $15.5 (http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/2/5/83582625.htm)
As for all the "jokers" I hope that's proof enough a guy can get a decent used boat that meets this guys "wants" for $20k or less!

You're not thinking like a HB'er... it needs to at least a 100K, he'll have to get a new one ton dually diesel to tow it, and it needs to have reverse purple and orange tribal flames...
Then people will talk to him in a kindly voice... :D :D :D

I agree there are some great deals out there. We shopped around for quite some time, and picked up our 97 Lavey for $24K. No ballers over in this camp, but we have a hell of a good time on the water. The best boat for under $20K is whatever gets you on the water, and makes the family smile.

Does anyone have any experience with the Scarab Excel hull? I am sure it was the shizz in 1990, but I wonder about now?? I am seriously considering it. My boat is too small. I had no idea I was going to need an offshore boat to not get my ass kicked on the weekends in Havi, damn big boats! :boxed: Any input?

Search the Scarab forum at OSO. I do not have direct experience with the 28 Excel, but have a buddy with it's sucessor - the mid '90's 29'er. He runs his boat at LOTO and claims it rides better over the big water better than his brothers' twin engine 33' Fromula. Both the 28 and 29 are narrow beam, deep V hulls - which means great rough water ride but it stakes some serious HP to get big speed out of them. I think both will run mid 60's with standard 502 power. I've heard you need close to 600hp to get them in the 70's.

hey Rick I don't know exactly where you guys are looking to budge on your search but there is a real nice hallett vector in my garage looking for a new owner...belongs to some friends of mine...
98 21' Hallett closed bow
454 mag, Bravo drive
approx 230 hours on hull and 175 on engine.
I think he is looking for 30K for it??

I have my eye on a Hallett and a Howard both close to the same price and size. My GF wants a poorta potti and neither boat has room in the cabin for it. Found a real nice Baja but I'm not sure about the retail value or how well they hold there value. I'm gpoing to keep looking for the deal I want as I have the luxury of being a boat bitch on my brothers 270 hallett.
