What's up y'all? I'm shopping for my second boat and looking mostly at the used market but having a hard time determining how many hours on an engine is too much. I found a 99 Dayona that I really like but it has 177 hours on it and that seems like a lot...Does anyone have any thoughts?

No its not the one in Highland, its a friend of a friends boat that I'm going to look at this weekend. It has a 502 and he's asking $49k for it.

Be sure you go by what is on the ECM, not what the hour meter says, those hours meters can be way off. When i boat an Ultra a few years back, the hour meter said 40 but the ECM was actually over 100 hours.

I know this is a dumb question but what does ECM stand for and I'm assuming thats on the engine somewhere?

I think we have close to that many hours on our 2003. :squiggle:

I Electronic COntrol Module, it is the computer that controls the engine. It will have the exact hours the boat has been run. In order to read it you will have to take the ECM to a shop that has the equipment to read it.

Tell us a little about the boat and the motor.
FYI, I have a 1988 454 Mag in one boat that has almost 900 hours
on the long block, still leaks down good and runs like a champ.
177 hours on it does not seem like a lot unless it is a very high
performance piece.
If it is an Merc HP 500 or 525, one may be mindfull of inspecting
and/or replacing the valve springs at around 200-300 hours along
with rebuilding the raw water pump.
Like JBB said, good maintenance is the key to eliminating any
normal suprises.

Well I havent been to see it yet, doing that on Saturday. From what I know its a 99 Eliminator Daytona with a 502 and has 177 hours. Thats all the info I have right now. Appreciate all the insight.

Good luck.
If you are serious about bying it, check the compression, oil condition,
outdrive grease (for water, etc) and overall health of the boat.
If it does not rattle, overheat and has good oil pressure, then you
should be alright.
Remember, hour meters have a history of loosing time :D
EFI and later models use the computer to record hours and you
can have someone check them with a scan tool and it will give
you the actual hours (if it is the original smart box for the boat)
Take some photos if you get the boat and post them.

It does have a 502 EFI. Sounds like I should definitely schedule a test drive. Its at an automotive dealership so I doubt they have an onsite tank.
