I have a 04 PS superduty and have been reading in the diesel stop (http://www.thedieselstop.com/ubbthreads/) forum that people are changing there diesel oil at 12,000 with oil filters being changed at a 6,000 miles between oil changes. I have been changing my oil and filter at 7500 miles. Is anyone else changing there filters only or do you change them both at the same time.

I have a 99 Ram 3500 w/ the Cummins and I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles. I know many books and techs now say you can go 7500 - 12,000 miles depending on how and where you are driving, but the way I look at it is that the oil is the life of your engine. I have had friends with my identical setup that would go 15,000 miles and it still didn't seem to be a problem. Seems to be a preference of the owner. A few extra bucks to keep it running good doesn't bother me and I'm 150,000 miles going strong!!
Just my .02.

In my 99.5 PS-SD I was doing oil/filter every 5-7k, w/ fuel every other oil change. now, it's oil filter at 5k, fuel at 10k and i dump the oil at 25,000.
ohh, did I mention now I am running Amsoil? now pushing 190k miles
(knocking on wood)
kinda depends on your driving though my .02

Amsoil is great stuff but don't use it in a diesel until at least 10,000 miles on the odometer. After that, depending on use 25K miles or a year is reality. You can always pull a little out and do an oil analysis if you are curious on the quality of the oil.

Amsoil however is pricey, about $100 for 4 Gl. They have even more miles between recomended changes. I know in our 2 strokes I run their 100:1 and everything is beautiful in the combustion chamber.
Yes Essex, I didn't run it until I hit 100k miles. I'll do the boat once it has some more time on it...
*couple more things to note-
atleast on the 7.3's the oil pan can not be removed w/out pulling the motor, so do not strip the plug! and the drain plug washer tends to leak after a while fwiw :)

I have been changing mine every 5k on my 2004 Duramax.
When should I consider doing an oil analysis I have 17k on the truck? Also is there any other major or minor service that needs to be done. Thanks Rob

I would consider oil analysis only if you are using synthetic and you are going to extend the drain interval to 25K or one year - whichever occurs first. At the rate you're going and if using petroleum based oil it won't save you much do analysis now.

So are you telling me to do it cause Im lost in the first sentence you said not to and the last one you said do analysis now. I have had my truck almost a year in July and I change the oil every 5k. Thanks Essex502.
