How crowded is Lake Powell on the 4th of July weekend? Went to Apache Lake last 4th, and it was awesome. It was hard to believe it was a Holiday weekend.

The lake is so big its hard to ever call it crowded. On a big weekend the worst thing that happens is you might have to wait 30 mins or so to get back on the trailer. Or sometimes somebody might roll up and want to camp alittle too close to you. If they still want to stay after you crank up the stereo and start running around naked, you can be shure that they will be fun to party with.

There is sooo much space here!.. The only thing that gets a bit crowded is the channel heading up lake.. I will see if TnB or Deez can post a few more pics of the lake showing the open space! :D
Well then.. the launch ramps may have a bunch of boaters... but once you are out on the water.. wooohoo!

Lets make it work for you both!

It depends,, Our 15 year old will be going,, and she interacts great with the younger kids.. I don't know if Velocity is bringing his girls or not, but I think his youngest is about the same age as your oldest.
My partner my be coming too. If they do, they have a 6 year old boy.

Went by Antelope Point. The only thing open there is the Fuel Dock. No store and it doesn't even look like they are selling ice.

When I stopped and took the pics, a DPS officer was there. He had been "gaurding" this for a full day waiting for a tow truck. The story he told me is that a guy in Cali had bought this and lost is towing it between Lake Powell and Flagstaff. Instead of calling someone, he just left it there. This thing sat on the side of the road like this for 2 days before they hauled it off. DPS finally tracked it down from the hull ID number and called the guy who had sold it to the Cali guy. The new owner figured it wasn't worth recovering.

is it a safe assumption that the beach we're using as ground zero is 26 miles from the marine? i'm going to use mapquest for a map to get me to the lake. i've never used mapquest before, are their maps generally pretty accurate? i spoke with mardonzi a few weeks back and he recommended i take the "southern" route. i was going to tow the boat up without fuel and fill it once i find page unless places to get fuel there are pretty limited. i'll be coming from las vegas. we'll be leaving in the middle of the night so it will be all driven at night, if that makes any difference.
You can run Mapquest, Yahoo Maps, or Rand McNally Maps. Mapquest will send you thru Zion National Park which I think is the fastest way to go if its not busy. The others take you to the south. The only problem is that there are restrictions for rigs over 7'11" wide in Zion, they have to be escorted thru the tunnel and pay a small fee. Rigs over 50' total are not allowed at all.
Now, we have done this drive at night and there was no one checking and sailed right thru. So if it is still like that--and you leaving late at night--I would go that way. If not, then you could bypass Zion to the south thru Colorado City. Just be careful when you get off I-15. These are pretty narrow, winding, and desolate roads between St George and Page. Also watch for radar speed traps in the small towns.

Outnumbered,, TnB is right,, go through Colorado City.. it is a hell of alot faster. As far as fuel goes,, the Chevron outside of Greenhaven is a couple of cents higher than town. TnB,, we have a newer Maverick down near Wal-Mart with lots of room to turn around in, plus they have the cheapest 91 Octane in town.
Throttle,, we make it from here to Havasu without towing anything in 5 hours...
We just came back in off the lake,, We set up on the beach in Kane Wash (I would post pics, but ***boat still won't let me,, no idea why) set anchors out above the waterline at 4 pm last night. By this morning, they were all the way underwater. The lake came up about 8 inches overnight.
The water levels are higher than when we were there in October and probably only about 4 feet below the August trip of last year. If the flows keep up, it will be identical to that trip except the water is a bit cooler...
I'm off of work from Wed afternoon on.. so if anyone shows up early, we could run up that way...

IMPORTANT INFO!!!!!!!
OK,, if, by some odd stroke of Bad Luck, we are not all at the launch ramp when people start rolling in due to the Parkies throwing us off of there, we will be on "N" Dock. There is enough open slip space there for 6-7 boats. Our boat will be in N-24. TnB posted his cell number and mine is 480-231-8861.
Next item,,, The menu....
TnB wanted me to post this over here
Everyone needs to bring the basics, paper plates, trash bags, utensils,
drinks.
Friday Night - Spaghetti Dinner
In the past this has turned out to be a fantastic meal. T&B is making the
base of the sauce and bringing tons of pasta, KC is bringing enough garlic
bread to feed a crowd. We just need a few ingredients to add into the pot!
- Bring a quarter or half pound of ground meat per person, we'll cook it at
the campsite in T&Bs kitchen, sausage or ground beef
- Bring enough green salad and dressing to cover your people and a little
to go around
- Carlos Rossi Sangria, this is always a good hit
Saturday - Morning
Breakfast is a very important meal, though this trip we might not have the
Leopard Print Bloody Mary maker with us.... Last trip we cooked about
eight dozen eggs and twelve pounds of bacon, add in some tortillas and hot
sauce and your good to go!
- Bring enough eggs and bacon to cover your people and a little to go
around
- Bring some good hot sauce to help wake you up
- Sound like there will be a house boat with a coffee maker, think about
really good ground coffee with Kahlua and Bailys
Saturday - Lunch
In the past one of the peeps has brought along a small table top BBQ, we
find a sandy beach in Escalante and grill up scooby snacks.
- We need a volunteer to bring a small table top BBQ, coleman gas or
propane
- Bring enough burgers, hot dogs, sausages, brauts, chicken wings, to cover
your people and a little to go around
Saturday - Shrimp Boil
This is always a winner! We make the shrimp boil in two waves, first wave
for the kids and those with sensitive tummy's, then we KICK IT UP A NOTCH.
T&B and KC will bring the core spices and veggies for the sauce.
- Bring at least one pound of frozen uncooked shrimp per person to cover
your people, the ones with only the tails if you can find them
Bring firewood, marshmallows and jiffy pop
Trash bags are always helpful to carry out everything that is brought in.

IMPORTANT INFO!!!!!!!
We will be coming in late thursday evening. We will hit St. George about 8:30.
Is there anything else we need to know like can I launch after dark. (we will be sleeping on the boat.) Or is it better to hit it early in the A.M.
Is gas going to be cheaper in St. George or at T&B's Chevron station.
And I guess just bring the stuff on the menu.

05-22-2005, 04:20 PM
You probably already know this, but if you take Highway 20 from just south of Beaver over to US 89, or just hit US 89 in Scipio, and then head South, it's about 90 minutes faster than going through St George.
As far as launching,, you can launch at anytime.. and unless the parkies have a fit, we will be there at the ramp..
When I came through St George last weekend, there was only like a 2 cent a gallon difference in gas costs between there and Page.

i have failed once again to get my powell map. so i don't know how far escalante is from kane wash (that's the ground zero, right?). if the two places are close enough to move house boat over there we can use the grill on the boat. i've got a small hot plate that we always keep on the boat but it won't do any good for grilling. i noticed the menu goes through saturday. does that mean that most folks will be leaving sunday morning? we are staying until monday late morning/early afternoon.

Wild Horses

Escalante is a far distance up lake for a house boat just for a day trip. With the price of gas it would only set you back a hundred or two. :D

at a regular cruising speed on a power boat, how long does it take to get to escalante? if we decide to make the trip up river with everyone else, should we be worried about the houseboat being left alone for a good part of the day?

i have failed once again to get my powell map. so i don't know how far escalante is from kane wash (that's the ground zero, right?). if the two places are close enough to move house boat over there we can use the grill on the boat. i've got a small hot plate that we always keep on the boat but it won't do any good for grilling. i noticed the menu goes through saturday. does that mean that most folks will be leaving sunday morning? we are staying until monday late morning/early afternoon.
We will be there through Monday also...
The Escalante is too far to move the houseboat around,, trust me on this one..
Kane Wash is Ground zero.. We were just there today.. lots of room for a houseboat.

Ahhh. I see. What time does the run start? We will be staying at the Lodge so we'll be running up from there. I'm kicking around bringing a tent in case we don't feel like running back down one night. How is that beach at Kanes for tent camping?

Bring your tent!! Sat night will be fun. Lots of beach for tents. Surely T&B will have to swear off drinking for a couple hours saturday a.m. so we wont leave too early. I may be getting picked up at Antelope marina sat a.m. about 8:30 or so. You could meet us there too. Possibly going friday night but we will make sure to find you.

We usually pull over at Goblin Valley and sleep then launch early at Bull Frog.
I filled up at Havasu 2 weeks ago with 100 octane then when I get about half down I will try Antelope Points premium :frown:
When I run at 6000' I run 10 lbs with 91 octane. 4000' 8lbs on 91 octane. Havasu 10 lbs on 100 octane. Its a vortec supercharger so if I stay off of the top end I can run crappy fuel just have to watch the boost gauge. :hammerhea
I know this from experience two years ago I popped a hole in a piston when I was running Halls Crossing premium (I had just switched tanks to there fuel after running hard on off water premium) I was clear down to Gunsight Butte and had to limp back to Bull Frog, as long as I stayed off boost I was ok but it sure felt like a long trip.
I now run an intercooler with less static compression and more boost and less timing advance, so far its been great.

We're kicking around cancelling our reservations and camping out. A few questions:
1) If we decide to hotel it, just how bad does it suck to run the narrows twice a day in a 24' boat?
2) If we camp, are there plenty of beaches to pitch a tent? I have been to Powel many times but never to the lower end of the lake. I am more familiar with the Halls/Bullfrog area.
Thanks

Ton of beach in Kane wash so that is not the only option. Last summer at cruising speed it took me about 50 mins or so to get from Wahweap to Kane wash. I timed it a few times and would always be the same.

Guys & Gals,
I just returned from a 5-day trip to Powell. Yes there is a lot of beach but unfortunately most of the beaches are now covered with weeds. It's a lot different then last year; the weeds have moved down the beaches towards the water line. Take some rakes to help get rid of the weeds. Almost every beach I saw in Padre Canyon and Kane Wash was covered with weeds. They're still green so burning them off is not an option.
We managed to find a weedless beach/cove in Gunsight, second cove on the left.
Antelope has a lot more services this year, store, 87, 88 & 91 octane fuel. They have the cheapest fuel on the lake.
Wish I could come up but I'm still recovering from the $300 gas bill from last weekend. Had a great time, the water is really warming up. The channel was super rough and fun on Sunday. We ran the entire channel from Gunsight to Wahweap in the 60-MPH range. What a thrill, our little 22 was in the air more then the water but just ate it up. A guy next to our house boat knocked himself unconscious hitting a swell in a small cuddy cabin boat. The boat kept going head-on towards a rock wall in the channel. He woke up at the last second, pulled the wheel over and just brushed the wall with the boat, otherwise it would have been head-on directly into the wall. Everyone on the houseboat watched this play out from the top deck expecting to see this guy perish. They pulled along side after and asked if he needed assistance but he refused. Wear your kill switches people.
We also listened to the radio chatter after the lady from Fountain Hills was struck and killed by her house boat in Last Chance.
Be safe & Have fun.

What a weekend! It was great to hook up with some good people. Much thanks to T&B and everyone for their warm welcome and hospitality. You guys sure know how to “rough-it”. It was great to meet some of the peeps from the boards like T&B, Deez, Moneypit (LV ***boats), Mardonzi, AZ Lake Lizard, Wild Horses, and a bunch of others who I can’t remember the screen names right now.
Although we only hung out for a day, it was a good time. Sorry we didn’t stay longer. We were looking to chill this weekend and spend some family time for the most part. My last few months at work have been pretty busy and lacking in the family time. Not to mention, the sand-blasting was a bitch. So we ended up in the back of Driftwood Canyon in a small slick-rock lagoon for the rest of the weekend, sheltered from the blowing sand and high winds.
Mrs. O had nothing but good things to say about you guys and felt bad that she didn’t hang out more. For her the kids always come first and she didn’t feel comfortable letting our 4-year old sleep in the boat unattended, so she missed most of the party.
How was Saturday night on the beach? I’m glad we were out of that sand. We had a pretty good T-storm with high winds come thru up near Dangling Rope. The winds all weekend were a major bummer. I don’t remember ever having that much wind on Powell. It was a good test for the Ultra which did very well in some pretty rough water.
Well, enough rambling. I'll post some pics later if anyone cares to see.

Real brainiacs!!!! Yea, we passed one of them and I asked him what he was thinking (he wouldn't have been barefoot in late July). It's kind of hard to keep a boat clean at Powell when the weather acts up like it did this past weekend. We stay at the Defiance Lodge at Bullfrog every time we go down, so the camping "mess" is somewhat alleviated. We go down 8-9 times a year. Usually go down to Dangling rope for ice cream. Wish they had 91 Octane fuel at the marina so we could explore a little more down there. Oh well, the price you pay for HP. It is a great Lake and we enjoy it much. Maybe see you sometime.
