OK, so I am an entry level SolidWorks ninja now. I have a lot of good stuff going on, and I am making my way through this billet development like a swordfish through a school of mackerel. That being said...
How do you mill text into a face? For example, a switch panel annotation???

Your Solidworks specialist, aka MalibuKen, is on his Havasu honeymoon this week.
Another who has experience with that is MntnDewDrops---send him a PM.

If you have a .dxf file, so assuming you are trying to get a logo onto the part, make it in .dxf format and put it onto the place where you want it. Then extrude that cut to desired depth.

If you don't get an answer here, I just googled "solidworks forum" and got lots of hits. Here are some (one's even a boat design solidworks forum :p ) Good luck!

Solidworks has the sketch feature intergal with the software. Importing a sketch will work also, but is cumbersome and extra operations. Using the text feature of the program is parametric, and allows for future modifications. Email me if anyone needs any help in Solidworks.
Am I still in ***boat forums, or Solidworks forums?

Thanks for the input. I know the sketch feature is in there somewhere, I just don't know specifically how to do it.
Where is the text feature??? Can you import different fonts?

I hadn't thought of that. I have been googling the phrase "Solidworks tutorial" help, etc....
Thanks for the links. This place rocks!

Go to:
1. Tools
2. Customize
3. Commands (tab)
4. Sketch (scroll down to)
5. Look for "A" icon on right
6. Left click and drag the icon onto one of your toolbars
7. OK to exit
8. Select face, plane, or surface to generate text on
9. click on the newly added "A" icon and follow the directions on Feature control frame
After you setup the icon once, all you have to do then is step 8 and 9.

Thanks. I always wondered about that too.

Froggy, follow Yates9's directions above to add the text sketch tool to your toolbar.
Click on the face you want to mill the text onto, click sketch to open a new sketch on that face, then hit that "A" icon. In there, you specify the size, font, text, etc. I believe you can use any font installed on that machine.

Here is another little item I have been working on. This is the pedestal for the helm seat. Others call it a billet seat base.
It looks great in real life. This part is nearly finished.

OK, last question on the font stuff...
Is there any way to edit the type of extrusion it does? This is a rough, flat extrusion with sharp edges. I would like to ball mill it instead.
Any ideas???

OH, and one more question... if you are using smart dimension, but it doesn't actually change anything except the indicated dimension (you dimension it and it indicates lets say a 140 degree angle, you change the dimension to 120 degrees and it changes the number but not the angle)
What is wrong??? I think it has something to do with Automatic Solve being off, but I don't know how to turn it on. Somebody sent me something with a bunch of text on it and the file was too big to use it so it shut off automatically.
Never mind!!! Thanks to Solidworks help... I figured out the automatic solve thing... it was off.
Thanks again for all of the help guys!

That would be an extruded cut to make the text, then go in and add a fillet at the bottom edges of the text cut and raduis it in.

Well look at the big brain on Brad....
Thanks Keith. That is unforunately what I figured I would have to do. I think I will just specify a ball mill in the callout!
Whaddya think of the seat base???

Looks bitchen' Wes. One thing you might try, just to play around, is make the front and rear angles straight instead of following the angle of the trident. Might make the trident in the design more pronounced when it's tongs? aren't parallel to the front/back.

Under normal circumstances I would try that...
However...

Ask your machinist to clean the machine up a little better next time...

Have anybody done a finite element analysis on the base to see what it's structural properties are? Can't tell from the pictures the scale of the bases. Seems like with the modern CAD systems analysis - while so easy to do - is so often forgotten or neglected.

You are always impressing the crap out of me with your Revolution! Kudos to you for making what appears to be the most well thought out product in performance family boating. I gotta get down there and see this for myself sometime. You make me want to send you a reusme! :D

Easy day. I used Cosmos to do this one. It will hold up 10,000 pounds in shear. I figured that was enough...

Thanks for the good words bro. This has been a long haul, but we are almost there.
