Two men sought in Costco robbery

DURHAM -- Two men remained at large Sunday evening after robbing the Costco warehouse store at 1510 North Point Drive by driving a pickup truck through an open door shortly after 10 a.m.
The passenger got out of the stolen Toyota pickup, approached nearby jewelry display cases and smashed them with a hammer, police said. He then grabbed an armload of jewelry, threw it in the truck and the two backed out of the store.
Police found the truck abandoned in a parking lot of Duke Medical Park in the 2400 block of Broad Street. The truck was still running and officers thought they spotted a suspect walking into nearby woods. When police told a man they believed to be the suspect to stop, he began to run.
The man then ran into an apartment in the 1000 block of Leon Street at Northview Village Apartments. Police knocked on the door, but no one answered. Police could hear someone inside, so they kept waiting. The police Selective Enforcement Team set up snipers outside, and after a few hours the suspect appeared in an upstairs window and told police he was giving up.
The man, who was later identified as a resident of the Northview Village Apartments, came outside with his arms in the air. Police escorted him at gunpoint for questioning.
The man, who claimed he ran when police accosted him because he believed there was a warrant for his arrest, was questioned and released at the scene. He said he had not seen anyone resembling the description of the suspects in or near his apartment.
Witnesses at Costco described the driver of the pickup as a black man with corn rows.
The passenger who smashed the jewelry case is described by police as a male, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, who was wearing a gray sweat jacket, dark pants and a black ski mask.
A manager at Costco said the store did not know the value of all the jewelry taken.
After police arrived at the store, they roped off the area around the jewelry cases and let customers continue shopping. No one was hurt.
"We want the jewelry back, obviously," said Kevin Wagner, the store's assistant wholesale manager.
Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator J.P. Carnevale at 560-4582, ext. 227, or CrimeStoppers at 683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.
