My dad knew one of the test pilots; Darryl Greenemeyer? He told pops a story one time where he got into some trouble in an f104 early on in the program. He was low and losing power; he went to eject and at the last minute, recalled that the ejection system blows you out the bottom (high T-Tail); so he rolled over and ejected at about 100 ft.
If he hadn't have done that, he'd be about 5 feet underground :jawdrop:

They were 5" rockets Tom. Here is a little story..
One of the most outstanding escort missions during 1944 occurred on April 2nd. The assignment was to provide escort and close cover for B-24s of the 30th Bombardment Wing, in an attack against the ball bearing plants and aircraft factory at Steyr, Austria. The P-38s took off from Triolo airdrome at 0835 hours. Rendezvous with the bombers was scheduled to be made over the target area, which was five hundred miles away from the base; but the bombers were late, and the P-38s turned south and picked up the bombers twenty miles northeast of Trieste at 1045. When the bombers neared Steyr at 1205 hours, forty twin engine enemy fighters headed for the bombers. Flying four in a line abreast, the enemy planes began coming in and prepared to launch their rockets. Instantaneously, the 48th Fighter Squadron engaged the onrushing planes, broke up the enemy formations, and forced the planes to fire the rockets at random. Then the 48th engaged the planes in conflict, and in a relentless attack, cut the flights to pieces. Twelve enemy planes were destroyed and two probably destroyed.

One of the 7 (yes seven) planes from WWII that shot my Grandfather down over Europe. It has the distinction of being the only one from his side that got him! Before you all start talking trash about his skills, he was a J 5 pilot. Tough to dogfight with no guns, and a plane that went 60mph. :2purples:

I had an uncle who flew a Lancaster during WWII. He was in England for a while but ended up working the flight school for most of the war. I guess they were really short on qualified pilots. He shared endless hours of stories with me. I could listen to them for hours and still could.
My grandfather was one of the few tank gunners who survived WWI. Apparently, there were only a hand full who didn't get picked off. He was pretty messed up after the war, though.

We had a family friend "Fish" Salmon, yes that was his real name , who was a test pilot for Lockheed and he'd come over have a few with my dad and tell some of the best stories about testing and the stuff they pulled, i could stay up for hours and listen to him go on and on about that stuff. I have a photo somewhere around here, have to scan it and post , he's in his flight suit next to a 104.

Loved the XB-70
http://www.xb-70.com/wmaa/xb70/titlepic.jpg
Sad story...
On 8 June, 1966, one of aviation's most tragic accidents occured in the skies over the Mojave Desert. After an early morning flight test sortie in XB-70 Air Vehicle #2 (AV/2), pilots Al White and Major Carl Cross rendezvoused with a flight of four fighter-type aircraft and a Lear Jet. The idea was to group the fighters in formation around the XB-70 while photographers aboard the Lear Jet documented the event. All five aircraft were powered by General Electric engines, and the photos were to be used in GE advertising.
After over forty minutes of formation photo work, disaster struck. One of the fighters, a Lockheed/NASA F-104 flown by NASA chief test pilot Joe Walker, moved too close to the XB-70 ultimately resulting in a collision. The F-104 (NASA serial number 013) was caught in the XB-70's wing tip vortices, and then flipped over onto the top of the massive bomber. Joe Walker was killed instantly as the XB-70's twin vertical tails were torn away.
The F-104 exploded and fell to Earth in at least three pieces. The crew of the XB-70, initially unaware of the collision, continued in straight and level flight for 16 seconds, eventually to enter a unrecoverable flat spin. Al White ejected in the final few seconds, but tragically, Major Cross lost his life when the XB-70 impacted the ground. The pieces of Walker's F-104 came to rest nearly six kilometers to the north. In a matter of seconds, two brave men and two valuable aircraft had been lost.

Yeah and everything had to be working right for the darn thing to fly, if there was an engine failure during takeoff roll or intial climout the other three engines would have been overtaxed and were pront to failures. But an awesome plane, hauled ass looks sexy as hell too.

My best friends dad was a electrician on the SR.
Says in the early days they had two Buick 455's running at full song to spin up the turbines before lighting off! When the Buicks were retired they were replaced by SBC's.
Full load of fuel to get off the ground. Plane would make one turn......then it was gone! Would refuel then start it's flight path.
After decommissioning, he worked on the U2's and w/NASA experimental flights using the U2's.

Beautiful!!!! Nothing like doing 85 kts in a Stearman at 1000 feet over the greenery of summer.
True....but this baby does closer to 115 kts with the bigger power. You can throttle back to about 100 kts to get fuel consumption down to about 17 gal/hr from 22 gal/hr. Its tough to get consumption much below 17 gal/hr even @85-90 kts... :notam: Just too much drag!! I took it up to 11,000' one time and was getting 140 kts and burning 17 gal/hr leaned down. Only problem was it got cold with shorts and a T-shirt!!
Thanks for the compliment.
