Posts: 283 CMI Introduces 496 Sport Tube Performance Package
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
July 8, 2005 – Custom Marine, Incorporated (CMI) has announced the introduction of a new custom exhaust package specifically designed to enhance the overall performance of any sport boat equipped with a propulsion system powered by a 496 engine. Equipping an engine with the exclusive CMI stainless steel 496 Sport Tube™ Performance Package is sure to attract attention at any dock. But it's on the water where this package will really turn heads. Simply adding this package to any stock 496 will result in adding nearly 60 more horsepower, boost mid-range torque by nearly 14 percent, boost fuel economy across the power curve and improve the engine's overall running quality.
"With the introduction of the 496 Sport Tube Performance Package CMI can address the needs of a very key segment of the performance boating marketplace," said Joe Zelinski, founder and president of CMI. "Until now, installing headers on a 496 package required having a machine and parts shop close by to create the necessary components required to make room for headers. With the CMI 496 Sport Tube Performance Package, performance enthusiasts can simply order our complete, easy-to-install kit."
The CMI 496 Sport Tube Performance Package comes complete with a pair of water-cooled headers made of 316-series polished stainless steel and required mounting hardware. Also included is CMI's exclusive 496 Relocation Kit, which includes all brackets, hoses and hardware needed to make relocation of select engine components easier and create adequate room for CMI's high-tech tube-style headers. Stock CMI tailpipes designed to fit a transom hole layout that is consistent with a standard Mercrusier® Bravo Drive transom hole pattern completes the 496 Sport Tube Performance Package.
The CMI 496 Sport Tube Performance Package is designed for application on all 496 engines.

Where's the hookup? I want a set if they are reasonable....

Great!
What's the retail cost? Who has the hookup and is their a break from that on two sets?
What does Ray and Larry say about them on their 103 package?

$4300 for 60 HP? :supp: Wouldn't we be better off with a Raylar Kit? I want to see Dyno sheets.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ (http://www.custommarine.com/headerapps/496SportTubePerformancePackage.html)

I would like the performance upgrade! But the cash out, just for headers? I was told the stock exhaust manifolds were capable of retaining, even after adding whipple kits. So how inefficient could they be?

I would highly doubt 60+ HP gain and the price for these things is way too steep for us working stiffs.
I went with the Revolution Marine http://revolutionmarine.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/bbcexhaust.html
$1,200 for polished, can't be beat on "Bang for Buck" comparison !!

Just a post I read on Off Shore Only posted by ther admin.
That's the only thing I never liked about looking at a 496. Since they are CMIs does that mean it will be factory soon?

I would do the Lightnings before spending that. I like the look of them better anyway. The ones INSman is running are the best bang for the buck.
CP lists the 8.1L Lightning kit at around $1900. Good middle ground.

Anything for the Mag HO or "8.1L" will work for the regular Mag also. You're not left out. :)

Looks to me about 35HP on the HP measurement next to the torque line, which is what I hear to be the difference with most decent aftermarket 496 exhaust systems.

Agreed. Corrected is not "real world". The HP they see on the dyno reading, real time, is as it would be in the boat. Other than the air-conditioned room.

my 496 (HO) dynoed at 419 (non corrected)
on a superflo dyno when we installed the Raylar kit
so that 496 seems a bit lite on HP (i was disapointed on mine sinse i had been told the HP claims by Merc were "conservative"
i am going to look at revolution marine as well
i do know that you can make the $2000 "sport kit" work, you do have to weld on a few bungs for the oxygen sensor and a braket, but those can all be made! i know that for a fact....

Chris, I think the "conservative" stuff comes from the racing division.. Either way, they claim +/- 10% variance and some motors are just "hotter" than others. Looks like the one on the Dyno sheets was not so hot either :jawdrop:

Just to clarify, it is just a water temp sensor in each manifold, not an actual oxygen sensor. Didn't want to see some rumor start that 496s have O2 sensors. :)

on the topic of 496 upgrades has any HB members actually installed a Rylar and how long have they had it? Problems? Results? Just wondering probably will want to do something to my HO when the warranty is up!

No problem, man. Things just sometimes get taken real literally here. Have a beer....or 30, and relax. ;)

I have been following real closely. There are several threads if you search. No problems that I have seen or heard of. They seem to be top quality guys with top quality parts and service.
