First of all, that picture is NOT real. It is sick but not real. You can even see the dog isn't even laying on the floor. Poor photochop. :boxingguy Look how small the sliding glass door is compared to the dog.

He's not laying down because it looks his paws are the only part not covered in quills. My neighbor and I came accross our other neighbors 3 labs with beards compliments of these creatures. We were told it cost 1400.00 bucks for the after hours vet visit.

The first picture didn't show up until now. That is about nasty. I still don't think it's real. What did the dog do? roll all over the pocupine?

I have to believe it. I had 2 dogs go after a porcupine. One was agressive and had substantial coverage. The other not too bad. Both survived, the vets knock them out to get those quills out. Some are pulled, some are pushed through in the lips, ears and tounge. mine were lucky and had none in the eyes which can be blinding. That poor dog. Just as he is standing there, mine would stand very very still as well.

I don't think it's real either. The quills wouldn't be on all sides of the dogs head. It looks like they came at him from all different directions. I've seen dogs shot by porcupines and they usually have 10-25 quills in them. I just don't think it's possible to have them all around the head. Front, one side, or the other. Usually the front, right in the nose.
One of our dogs got a skunk one night and a porcupine the next. You'd think the dog would learn to mind it's own business. :hammerhea

I'm not a cropper but wouldn't it be hard to crop the blood all around his mouth?

I hope it is not real too. But, when I picked up my dogs, the vet asked me if the one with all the quills in him was agressive, I asked why, he said because of all the quills inside his mouth and all around his head, he obviously went back for more after the initial hit. Somedogs are just agressive and don't quit. I believe that pit just stayed with the fight as their instincts can make them do.

My dog just dumps a bottle of BBQ sauce on those nasty ass porcupines and eats em whole! But dont stand behind him 4 hours later cause he fires off those quills in such succession that it looks like a Navaho war party ! :2purples: :D

Yes it is.
Origins: An alternate version of this e-mail provides the additional information that the dog pictured above is a female bull terrier named Inca who had her memorable encounter with a porcupine in May 2005:
Inca apparently did not know when to quit when she encountered the porcupine on Victoria Day, May 23rd. These are the pictures the vet sent before the long (and expensive) procedure to remove the quills. She had thousands of quills, and her tongue was so covered, she could not close her mouth.
It was pretty scary at first. She is doing okay now, but looks like a World War III survivor as they had to cut some out in places, stitched between her toes, and many quills bled on removal.
Here are still quills buried in her, but they should work their way out over time (I pulled four more today). She is on antibiotics and pain meds and thankfully is doing quite well. Maybe she was showing off for her new boyfriend, Rocky, I don't know; but he only got a few in him, which friends were able to remove. Ike, of course, had better sense.
I sure hope that the Queen of Quills has learned her lesson...
These photos (along with a pre-quilling picture of Inca) were posted to the Citytv message board.
