Area boaters better get ready to pay higher registration fees.
The fees will more than double as of Aug. 31.
Arizona residents with a boat less than 12 feet in length would pay $20 instead of $8.50. State residents with a boat 20 to 26 feet in length would pay $35 instead of $16.86.
Out-of-state residents would be impacted even more.
An out-of-state boat owner would pay $100 for a boat less than 12 feet in length instead of $54.80, while the owner of a boat 20 to 26 feet in length would pay $259 instead of $110.70.
Game and Fish customer service representative Rosie Bernal said the fees are being increased in order to comply with a federal mandate.
The fees will go into the Lower Colorado River Conservation Fund, Bernal said.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department does not receive state General Fund revenues. The primary sources of revenue come from licenses, stamps and tag fees distributed through a formula used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to determine Arizona's federal funding for wildlife conservation.
Due to increased operating and infrastructure costs, the Game and Fish Department anticipated service reductions. Senate Bill 1365 sought to remedy the service reductions by increasing the Department's fee authority in order to meet its funding needs.
Gov. Janet Napolitano signed the bill into law on May 20, Bernal said.
The House approved the bill 42-12, while the Senate approved it by a vote of 20-8.

It sucks but it is still cheaper than paying the property tax that I would have to pay here in California.
