This is possibly my first new boat purchase and I was wondering if $44,000.00 sound fair for 2005 Chaparral 236 Sunesta fully loaded w/trailer out the door?

It's a production boat, not a custom so the cost is less. What engine, Drive, etc.? Not a bad price and if your new to boating not a bad starter either. You may be able to find one a couple years older for much much less. Don't go overboard (no pun intended) on your first boat, most likely you will only keep it for a few years as you learn what you like and dislike.

you could possibly get down a little lower being as its coming to the end of the season.. but thats about the going rate for one of those. i have talked with someone who owns one and they really like it.

Why not buy a 2 year old one and save thousands.

Chapp are great deck boats. A good friend has the larger one and it is great. He has had some service problems with the local Chapp dealer in Ontario.

I'm asuming the dealer in question is Sun Country? Thanks for the head up!

Thanks to all for your replies. My orginal plan was to wait until the LA Boat show or look for a used one in the off season, so it look like I'll wait till then. Thanks

If you can buy around October you'll save some money, your other option is to wait until the new year when other guys are ready to buy a new boat and want to get rid of their's quick. Good Luck.

Check www.nada.com for the price of 2-4yr old used ones then decide if you want to buy new.

Well, I hear Chaparral is putting the Ilmor in that boat now. He'll save 100K!

That is a very fair price. They are blowing out all of the 05's as we speak, but even at that $44k is good. You may want to check new before you buy and at least use it as a bargining chip on the boat you are looking at. They are taking about $7k-$8k off list on that boat. The unfortunate thing as was already pointed out is you have to deal with Sun Country. As soon as the warranty runs out find a local shop you like.

Chaparral's are pretty nice for a production boat. Sun Country Marine sells hundreds of them a year. Mike and Donna Baso (the owners) are good friends with my parents and are two of the nicest people I know. Mike has been in the boat business for years and is very well known and respected in the marine industry.

Mine is a '02 Chap 242 with the 350Mag BIII drive and loaded 105 hours and I paid $29,000 (Tandem trailer included). Not busting on the 236 but the 242 is a much bigger boat.

And it has a windshield...
I thought you were stepping up to a custom? If I were going back to a production boat I would get one like yours but without the windshield... :D :D :D

We are looking at a couple. Needs to be open bow and able to handle rough water. Minimum 27'. MrsRiverOtter now thinks those little tented plexiglass thingeys are windshields :D
I guess you the reason Chap still makes a line of non windshield deckboats :D

She can call them windshields, you can call them windscreens/bugdeflectors... :D :D :D
Rough Water? the pictures that you've posted don't even have a ripple on the water surface, how rough of water are we talking? A wake from a Canoe??? :D :D

Good point! I will be trailering if not relocating to the FL Pan Handle. The boat would need to be able to handle the chop in the Bays and the calmer days in the Gulf.
Also brings up another good point. Need a step bottom for the stickey smoothe waters I usually boat in
