The boards seem slow today so here is something completely unrelated to boats. :rollside:
The way it used to be...
My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife , but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.
My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e-coli.
Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.
The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.
We all took gym, not PE... and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened, because they tell us how much safer we are now.
Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.
Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.
We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything.
I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.
I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.
Oh yeah... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!
We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked. Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.
We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got butt spanked again when we got home.
I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.
To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that? We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes?
We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac!
How did we ever survive?

No that is not the point I'm trying to make. I'm just think that "some" parents are affraid to discipline there kids the way they seem fit. doing nothing at all is definatly not the answer. Heck there are alot of kids these days that truly don't know the differance between right and wrong. I'm sorry you resent your parents . I was tought to respect my elders. What was done may not of always been right . But at least my parents had the choice. For that I love them. I may of resented them now and then, But they were the were in charge not The Child.

I guess I really am over 30.... :frown:
Us " Gang Members " used to stalk the neighbor hood with slingshots looking for a good supply of ammo (chinaberry tree ),sometimes even carried BB Guns looking in trees for Wasp Nests to shoot down...
we played baseball in the streets and football all down the block in everyones yards , can't remember gettin' told to stay off the grass ???or cops would be called.....and a good dirt clod fight was always just around the corner with the kids on the next street,( gotta work up a good thirst before we ALL walked to the A&W Rootbeer stand for a Float )
we would ride bikes up to the mall and hang out all day , when you came outside our bikes would actually still be there !!
yes Sir ,simple times are gone :frown:

Like My Dad Always Said. You Have To Instill Fear In Your Kids. The Kid Should Know That If He Does Something That He Should Not Be Doing He Is Going To Get It. When I Was Growing Up There Was No " I Am Going To Count To Three" Or "do You Need A Time Out". I Hear People Say That And I Start Laughing. If I Was Doing Something Wrong And Was Told Not To Do It Again, I Stoped, Cause I Knew The Next Time I Was Caught Doing It It Was Bam!!!!!! Up Side The Head, And Then It Was " I Told You Not To Do That Again Or You Were Going To Get It".

29 years old but from that era.
I can still remember smashing Robby Spencer in the face with a dirt clod from across the culdesac in one of those famouse dirt clod fights hiding behind trashcans.
He wen't home with a bloddy face crying and his dad told him to keep is head down next time.
We played tackle football on the grass and you would go home pretty banged up from being tackled into a rose bush or on a sprinkler head.
We use to go across the street where they were builing the new gymnasium and set up a rope swing that was way past dangerous.
I wasn't beat as a kid but if my dad was really pist we had to go to the garage and the belt came out.
Kids these days will never experience the fun that we did. :D ;)

I remember when parents actually tried to set an example for their kids based on their own actions.
Seems like that value has slid over the past few decades. Now parents tell their kids how to act correctly and then when they think the kids aren't looking. They party it up like rock stars, act like psedo lesbians, run it hard, swing, and act like kids on an MTV spring break video.
Problem is, kids do see it. Now wonder they are so confused!

I went to Pinecrest when not only would the teacher spank you but then you would get set to the principal and have to wait in his office for what seemed like hours, the waiting was worse than the spanking but that was the idea. Now you have people complain about getting tickets by mail for running a red light, what about stopping before the light turns red, Remember the kid in china that got caned for graffity and everyone was upset. i bet he never does it again. (at least not in China or wherever he was) unlike the kids here.

Gaining a deep foundation of trust and most of all respect from your kid is the most difficult way to modifiy kids behavior, but will reward you many times over. Fear of a beating just reinforces your kid to stay one step in front of you or away from you.
Respect = Can't let my Dad and Mom down
Fear = Ok but I can't get caught (again)
Which works when they are off on their own?
I've tried it both ways and the first way works way better for me.

My mom had the wooden spoon, and my dad had the 2" wide 70's leather belt, and neither one was afraid to use it. I remeber getting busted in 3rd grade for fighting with a 4th grader, and the princple sending the note home w/ me to give my parents. The note was "conveniently" lost on the way home. We sat down to a family dinner (that's were everyone who lives in a house eats at the same time at the table for you under 30's) and my dad asked me if there was anything eventful at school that day. I said no, and he proceeded to tell me that he ran into the principal that afternoon after work and that we would be 'discussing' it after dinner. I ran for my life as soon as my mom said I could be excused from the table - didn't help - I think I got my a$$ beat even worse.

camping trips consisted of the whole family in dads old teardrop camper to the forest or wherever we went.(was only to sleep)we ate outside sat outside. No luxories sat tv,computors, motorhomes, warm showers, comfy sofas, fancy cookware, etc. When we had to find a group of friends we had to really look or read the directions correctly NO CELL PHONE TO CALL OR GPS.Well there was the old cobra cb radio LOL :jawdrop:
Walkmans, gum, phones, other elect devices werent allowed in school you had to listen,Wood shop and metal shop was offered to us in 5th grade.
Boating 2 skis were the norm single ski maha you were the bomb, foam life jackets were in,you woke up early to go find a beach and take it with you when you left NOT LEAVE YOUR CRAP THERE ALL WEEKEND!bigger the roost the cooler you are.

Carlsbad is full of puzzies. :rollside:
The only time you beat San Clemente was when the surf team was on academic probation and you got to compete against the knee boarders.
:D :D :D :D
Yeah, yeah, you can think what you want, I know the truth..... :yuk:

My mom loved her wooden spoon too. Until it broke then she went to plastic. That darn thing never broke. :D
when my son was 3 or 4 i carried a wooden spoon in my purse..all i had to do was show it to him when we left the house and he was good...the funny thing about that is i never had to use it :)..now i think i need a paddle, but i dont think it would fit in my purse :):)

I remember our neighbor said I flipped him off so my dad kicked my ass. After the beating I swore to him I didn't do it. He went to the neighbor's and the neighbor admitted he lied and then he got his ass kicked. This is the America I love. No cops were called, no one got sued. No more trouble. I got a new bike. :D

Grew up on a small creek that dumped into the Magothy River and then the Chesepeake Bay. We were always swimming in that brackish creek with the turtles and blue crabs :D Our little town built a community pool you could join. My folks joined. We rode our bikes a mile to swim. Lasted maybe one summer, then we were back in the creek. No rules!

When I was a kid we had lead paint on the windowsills. I chewed on 'em all the time and nothings wrong with me...vmvopweosjdjdyfihwkwjweuwe824904376u0gq2[jheg942thui92tjheb-qe9ejh94t[j2thonbet9-hbet879etbn[9jbe1tnoe1tb]]\\eblqikthn0u-94tjmbnh0jetb

This thread cracks my ass up! All of it true. I'm not sure if it always worked, but by the time I was 9, if my Mom (yup, wooden spoon) or my Dad (yup, big, wide belt) told me to do something or to stop, I knew INSTANTLY what to expect for my action. Do as they say, no pain. DOn't do what they say, pain. Like a mouse, dog or cat, I learned fast.

Ever have to go and pick your own switch? If you came back with a wimpy one you had to go and pick a better one...
Used to ride bikes everywhere WITHOUT a helmet. Yup, crashed all the time and I am still here. Knocked my front teeth out in the 2nd grade with my bike handlebars trying to learn to ride with one hand so I could flash kiddie gang signs... Right, Left, Stop...

Only puzzies drove to Trestles <------notice the correct spelling.
I rode my skate board barefoot...downhill from my house. Why would you where your vans to the beach? :D
And the guys running were from Laguna Niguel or some shit and they were about to miss their bus. :boxingguy
:D :D :D
I actually owned a car :) no need to skate board 20 miles
