Single 30+ Women and Cats

It seems like most women who post here are married, but for those who aren't, and those of you who once were...what's the deal with cats? Why does it seem that the majority of 30+ year old, single women have one cat or more? I understand the companionship thing, but don't they realize most men don't care for the critters? Maybe I'm wrong on this assumption, but I haven't met a (straight) guy who would buy a cat over, say, a dog. Let's not even touch on the subject of dander allergy issues! Seems like if single women acknowledged this, they would increase their odds of finding a partner by NOT having cats. Maybe they subconsciously desire to live out their lives as spinsters?
