Well, it's official. I am no longer Mr. Goodwrench :( Many mixed emotions, I love working on cars and all the cutting edge technology, but I'm just plain tired of the business. I love explaining to customers how to operate their cars, but I'm sick of dealing with customers. (make sense?) I hauled my tools home today and now have the bitchenest set of home tools on my block. In about a week I start school to learn the art of being a train conductor. Short of marrying a woman with a 2 year old, this has to be the biggest change I've made in my life in some time. Wish me luck :D

Cars are one of the easiest to get burned out on and one of the toughest to leave. I've been there and I know what you mean. The beginning of this year will mean a change for me as well and I'm looking forward to it. I'll still be doing work I know, but in a whole new industry for me. I'll still build cars in my garage though, don't see me completely leaving it ever again. Just time for me to do something else now for a 'real' job.
Good luck in your new carreer.

From one Mr. Goodwrench to another I wish you luck. I feel your pain when it comes to customers, I go through that everyday. I figure I've ony got so long before I make a change myself. Congrats to you for having the balls to make the change, change is not an easy thing to do. Good Luck!

It's not so much that I want to be a conductor as that I want a job in AZ that has medical benefits and a retirement program. So, what's available? Not much, so let's look at national companies and what comes up? BNSF! Plus, I just don't want to do what I do in 120+ degree heat :D Perhaps I could sell insurance......
BTW, I need some good life insurance now that GM isn't giving it to me anymore....

what is an average income for a conductor, is their some kind of shortage?

As I understand, the average income for a starting conductor is Conductors earn an average of $67,128. BNSF employees receive annual benefit packages averaging $22,986. I know folks who pull over $100k, I just need a good retirement gig and benefits. I won't have a house payment once I get myself situated, so all will go to retirement. I don't want to eat Alpo when I get old :D link to openings (https://secure.recruitingcenter.net/Clients/bnsf/PublicJobs/controller.cfm)
