Check everything...
Look for any dry rot in the wood, check for stress cracks, check the bottom for beaching/rock damage(some is normal), Check the motor mounts. Get a service record if it's possible, check the trailer for major rust and electrical functionality. Look for any delamination of the fiberglass from the inside of the boat. If you don't know much about buying a used boat it would be a GREAT idea to take someone with you that does have a lot of knowledge. If you're tight on cash and don't want to encounter tons of problems with the engine, have a mechanic check it out thoroughly.
When buying a boat of that age be prepared to spend a lot of money over the initial cost of the boat. You may get lucky but older boats often times need a lot of TLC before they become trust worthy.
Good luck with your search.

i looked at a 22ft scarab, for about 15000 and it needed about 2 grand to make it decent, not bad when you cannot afford a new one, but i'll do all the work myself..

I think he will need more than $5-6k.
I do know of a guy who is selling a turn key Spectra that needs nothing (other than a bath) He is only asking $10k but would probably negotiate a little ;)
