View Full Version : Do you consider hunting a sport?

I do not see how a coward who hides behind some bushes while wearing camouflage can call it a sport. It is not even like the other side knows they are playing. Why don't they step out from behind the trees and face the animals like a man. :rollside:

The animals do have some players on thier team. Here is a fine exaple of some low brow trash who are too trigger happy to make good judgments.

So you figure the cow and chicken confined to eating their own $shit and being crammed full of antibiotics for your hambuger or leather belt had a humane 5 years of life vs the deer I shot that lived 5 years in the wilderness. Come on. If you don't like hunting that's ok but jeez.
I have hidden behind lot's of bushes hunting where if I missed I would have been the one being eaten. Call it what you will.

From the dictionary.....
A sport consists of a physical activity or skill carried out with a recreational purpose: for competition, for self-enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of a skill, or some combination of these.
Next question is....who really cares :D :D

Leave it to someone to come on here and take something that man has been doing for thousands of years and try to make it seem wrong. Granted not long ago there weren't guns so it was more of a "sport" as you call it only they did it to survive. If you eat what you kill I see nothing wrong with it.
The guys that put out bait or sit up high in a tree I don't believe are true hunters either.
Poachers should be put out there for practice for hunters in the off season.
Just my .02
I myself don't hunt but am planning on taking up the sport next year since my son is asking me to.

It becomes sport if someone else is in your tree post(or whatever the thing is called) and starts shooting your ass like that guy up in Wisconson(I think).
.
If you take home and eat what you kill then so be it but as some would call it Sport just to shoot an animal I have no respect for.
I know one fellow who hunts but he only hunts deer with a bow, seems much more fair and becomes more sport-like in that you have to really have bow-talent. Using a shotgun to kill a tiny little bird is cheating.

Bow hunters wound more animals than rifle hunters. I've seen this first hand. And most bow hunters I know sit in tree stands and wait for the animals to get close enough for a shot. Large game hunting is pretty much about sitting and waiting for the animal to come to you. I know there are guys out there that "stalk" a deer or elk, but most succesfull hunters I know scout out a good spot and sit there.
As far as hunting birds, my Grandfather hunts grouse and pheasants with .22... and bags quite a few.
Doves fly reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaly fast, it's a challenge to shoot them with a 28 gauge shotgun. And the effective range of those guns is only about 30 - 40 yards, so to get any birds, you gotta be close up and personal with them.
I don't hunt anymore as I found I enjoy the shooting more than the hunting, I've bagged my share of clay pidgeons in the last couple years... :D

Or if you were an evil little child you could make a wire noose, put a pile of grain outside the little hole in the fence around the chicken coop and when the chickens stick their heads out to eat the grain garrote them with the noose. They still run around..............err I mean I bet they would still run around. :D

First off, let me say that I am an avid hunter. I bought 150 acres of land last year, that I use only for hunting. I also spent around $4000 last year on deer corn, food plots, and mineral blocks to feed the deer on my place. If I had to guess, I would say that on average I am helping say 50 deer, and god knows how many wild hogs, survive. In the county that I live in, you cannot shoot any does, only bucks, and then you can only shoot one of them. The way that I see it is that I am helping the wild life far more than hurting it by hunting.

You are obviously not a hunter !!!
There's art to it, like in many other sports......
Try shooting a dove and you'll understand.....
Plus.....pulling their heads off is way cool !!!!!
Try getting close enough to a deer to actually get a shot off and you'd also understand....
I took my 7 year old boy out hunting a few weeks ago with Matt, one of the most rewarding day's I've had in a long time.....

There is a balance of life that hunters are maintaining that our new world has forgot about. Get involved in nature instead of the internet and experiance life. I won't take offense to your "coward" comment since you are oviously ignorant of the subject. What practical real world use is throwing a ball through a hoop or hitting a ball with a wood stick? You call that a sport. What does that teach you? How does that better your life? Those so called sports turn people into complacient spectators and consumers. Think about it.

Notice how many boxes of shells I had next to me. Those dove are super fast and can come out of nowhere.
Then there is this other thing called the Department of Fish and Game. There are season and bag limits for reason. The help regulate the balance between land and animals. If you have too many animals in a certain area that can't support the population, then they start dying off. That's not very cool. You have to keep everything in balance. Take away birds of prey and you get a mouse problem. We are just at the top and get to keep more things in check. Plus it's fun and they are tasty. :D

Caroline says hi. We probably wont make another trip out this year, just too much going on. We looked for you guys when we were out this summer. The house is finally getting built. Michele keeps me up to date on everything. Hopefully the house will be completed and next season it will be easier for us to make the trip without towing back and forth.
There is always room at our house! My shop should be up by February barring a lawsuit by my neighbor. I love winter in Havasu it is a great time as long as you don't try going to the Geritol Bar. :D Winterfest fireworks are a must do!
Have a good evening, I am off to bed.

Bow and arrow at least makes it game, otherwise you're just out there shooting a poor animal.

My thoughts on bow hunting are you better be pretty good. Otherwise you are just going to hurt the animal. Guns are usually a quick death. A well placed arrow can drop anything quick, it just has to be spot on.

I always wonder about that. Other people I know have NO problem picking up a steak or two, or heaven forbid, a LOBSTER, who gets cooked ALIVE.
Yet they frown upon me if I pick up a gun, and I kill dinner myself. Their dollars are just paying someone else to do the killing. Either way, a dead animal is a dead animal.
Geez, explain what the difference is. Sounds to me like people rattling off with their mouth, and not really THINKING about what they are saying.
As long as you eat what you kill, there ain't nothing wrong with it.

OOO Yea. Count me in on that one.. I don't hunt any more, But I wouldn't mind being a sniper in a area where the walls are always being tagged. Anymore I have more compation for animals than I do people.

Using a shotgun to kill a tiny little bird is cheating.
You have never tried to hit a zig-zagging ball of feathers similar in size to a tennis ball, from a third of the legth of a football field, while it whizzed by at 55 MPH. Just because I throw 500 pieces of lead at them 1/2 the size of pin heads does NOT make it easy.
Yes, turtledove fly 55MPH, on CRUISE. Miss one and they then get "excited".
You almost never catch any sitting, it is called "wingshooting" because they are already flying. Their long narrow wings and very snall body (try a Cockateil) are designed for 2 things, speed and maneuver. Miss your first shot and they'll jink better than any fighter pilot ever dreamed of. Experienced dove "hunters" can all relate tales of literally watching one pull a maneuver off that they'll swear they dodged their shot pattern.

It is a sport when a gook that was tresspassing shoots a bunch of unarmed people, yeah that is some ****ing sport.

No biggy at all. Actually I think they're dumb. I just scratch a stick on this piece of slate, the turkey walks up, and I shoot it. Pretty simple actually. The hard part is finding where they roost. Once you find that spot look out turkeys :D

I'm 38, been busting clay pidgeons and missing birds since I was arround 14, old enough to weild a single-barrel 20-gauge safely. I cut my teeth on hunting Pheasants and Quail with my father, Started Deer hunting Whitetails when I was 18 but have been unable to go most of 2 decades till recently. Some years I hhave had good success, some years, I have not. I do rifle hunt as I am not good enough with a bow to do the animal justice. I've never hunted Turkeys because I never wanted shot by any of the IDIOT turkey hunters (current company is an exception I'm sure) but there are none near me and there are Turkeys near my home so I have been debating it. I've never hunted Ducks or Geese because, with 30 years of steel shot rules, my old Browning A-5 would be wrecked by steel. I like the looks of the Bismuth shot so I havge been considering it. I have tried to shoot (with varrying degrees of success) Turtledove and greatly enjoy the agrivation it gets me. My average is 5 shots to get a bird. You are only allowed a gun to hold 3, and seldom get more than 2 shots, so a LOT get away to fly tomorow. There is NO FINER WAY to spend an afternoon in the fall than sitting in a chair, beside a pond, watching the evening pass on into night, whether any birds come by or not to shift "Old Faithfull" off my lap. If you've never been there, I would not expect you to understand it. My wife does not hunt, but comes to join me just for the pleasantness of the evening. I am still working on a recipe for Dove that she'll like, she doesn't like dark meat and little is as dark as dove breast (or as small hahhaaha).
I get bored fishing unless we have found some that are biting. I can walk miles and miles of CRP, hedgerow, and grain fields, sit all day long in my deer stand (on the ground as my place has no big enough trees), watch the sun set anywhere but over my back fence, and it has been a good day. Then I look foreward to doing it again tomorow. Again, If you've never been there, I can't expect you to understand.
If it's somehow wrong to continue what has perpetuated the survival and rise of my species, then I'll just be wrong, but it isn't.

Good point FC...I have hunted all my life and the thought of what an animal goes through when hunted by means of a bow and arrow makes me shake my head.....that is a slow death..probably by bleeding to death....I definitely believe the use of the right firearm is MOST often an instant death... IT comes to the hunters responsibility of knowing his anbility to place a good clean shot, and if it can be done don't shoot....
