Help with radio antenna reception....

I have a Alpine CDA-9833 receiver and I get very poor radio reception. I hooked the factory antenna back up but I am very dissappointed with the range. I have a cabin cruiser with the radio down inside the cruiser. I was thinking about 'piggy backing' a longer radio antenna up into the ship-to-shore radio antenna. Can this be done? Is there a suggestion on which brand or style to purchase. Again, thanks for the help?

I've been reading a little about these and wondering if anybody is having luck with them.
