A lot depends on space and how you intend to use it. I have a Panasonic 42' plasma and have had it for two years.
If you find you want a Plasma, do yourself a favor and get a Panasonic they are the best. I got mine on line and saved a ton of money, more than half off compared to stores.

You mean DLP. & from what i understand that nowadays DLP is the way to go but LCD is right there as well. I would stick with Sony, Samsung, Mitsubishi or panasonic. :D :D

I got some TV advice a long time ago.
Basically, the guy told me go to the stores, know what you want to spend and test them all out. Whichever one you can afford and like, get it.
TVs last forever anyways.

What's your budget?
How big of a TV do you need/want?
Will you watch HiDef?
Which do you care more about picture quality or price?
I suggest you look at rear projection CRTs but the selection and availability of these units is limited because manufacturers are making slimmer sets with other technologies.
Of the thin technologies, a high end plasma probably has the best picture. LCD and DLP sets are good but typically can't reproduce the blacks and keep up with fast-paced action.
The current issue of Consumer Reports covers this issue in detail.
Good luck

Sorry to spam you but I have a 3 year old 50 inch misubishi for sale. It's hardly been used and in brand new condition.I bought it for my office and ended up not wanting to buy another D-tv box for it so it never got used until last month when my other tv went out. It's a digital TV and can go HD with the add on box. I'll take $700 for it. If you go new I'd go with the DLP's. I've done lot's of research and the DLP's are built to last unlike the LCD's and plasmas that will start to go out in 5-6 years. Toshiba make a real nice DLP. The new ones are comming out over the next couple of months with the higher resoultion so you should wait if you buy new. Good luck. PM me if you're intrested in the 50 inch.

What is your main goal? Largest best picture for the money? Best flat panel for a bright room for the money? Best flat panel for a darker room for the money? Is it going into a builtin, on wall, or on a tv stand? Do you want the best resolition or is HD (720p and over) okay? Extended definition? Budget?
Best large tv for the money will be something like the Samsung HLR5078w 1080P:
http://product.samsung.com/images/prod/product03/b2c_l_hlr5078-5678.jpg
Until this year I would have steerd you toward a Mitsubishi DLP, but the mits picture looks like crap compared to this tv...
For a darker room with no glare problem, look toward the Pioneer PRO930HD Plasma. It costs a bit more but is a sic tv:
http://www.pioneerusa.com/pio/pe/images/portal/cit_3442/277940811PRO_1130HD_BIG.jpg
For a more econimical plasma tv, look toward the Panasonic TH42PX50 or px500.. Great tv for the money:
http://www2.panasonic.com/static//LargerPhoto/TH-42PX50U_L_Angle_Rev.jpg
For a bright room with a glare issue and need a flat panel on the wall, a flat panel LCD or SXRD tv will work well:
Sansung LNR409D flat panel LCD:
http://product.samsung.com/images/prod/product03/b2c_l_lnr269_329.jpg
Sony KDLV40XBR1 SXRD (kind of lcos based tv):
http://www.sonystyle.com/intershoproot/eCS/Store/en/imagesProducts/650x650/KDLV40XBR1.jpg
* personall I think the plasmas have a better refresh rate than flat panel LCD's. The Sony SXRD is a totally different beast , though. That is a sick tv.
How about something like this:
http://www.stewartfilmscreen.com/home_cinema_screens/todays-.jpg
:D
What is your need, then go from there...
BTW, the hitachi tv looks great, too...

I would go with the new XSRD Sony's. I like DLP but it has a moving part (color wheel) and can go out, also you might see rainbows on the DLP and get headaches from it. Either way, go with the new crop of 1080p sets if you are giong to buy anything over 50 inches. The new JVC D-ilas are nice too.

Rainbow effect is all but non existant since they went from a 4 to 8 pane color wheel.

DLP I have had my Samsung for a year now. Still a great pic and now two of my friend have the same. Best bang for the buck (now the price is coming down).

Rainbow effect is all but non existant since they went from a 4 to 8 pane color wheel.
But it is still there and I can see it, so I am sure others can as well. You can add all the panes you want to the color wheel, but it will never get rid of the rainbows. Also, sooner or later, that color wheel will take a shit and it will have to be replace. And it will go out after the warranty has expired. When Texas Instruments agrees to do 3 chip DLP sets, then I will jump on the DLP bandwagon as there 3 chip DLP projectors are the shit.

Like I said, all but nonexistant. I can't see it in the new Samsungs, but I can see it in the new Mit's, JVC, and Toshiba DLP's.... Fortunately, we are in the extreme minority.
3 DMD projectors are already available.... Runco and Vidkron is you have the $$,$$$.....
The idea of a 3DMD tv in rear projection is waaaay too expensive... My guess is that they'd be up toward 15k for a 50" if it existed.
If your trying to obtain the best picture available getting as close if not exceeding the performance of a 3 chip DLP, the Sony Qualia 3 panel SXRD tv is the shit. If you want affordability and want a picture better than the 1080P Samsung, the Sony SXRD based XBR rear projection is where it's at. We put one side by side in the training department, and it blows the samsung away by a longshot... Not even close...

I just bought this Proview 32" LCD HiDef widescreen at Costco for $999.
http://www.futureshop.ca/multimedia/products/large/10061306.jpg
Great picture, real bright and excellent color, and good sound.
This is nothing like the big Sonys and others, but for the money pretty good deal I think....(it's advertised all over the web for $1299).
And at Costco, I can "trade it in" in a year or two and get a better one....

I could not agree more, the only thing stopping me from the Sony, is the damn side speakers. Hopefully the side speakers will be gone on next years models. I am still enjoying my current HDTV so I might not even jump then.

WOW, lots of info here. I have to read it again.
Here is some info for starters.
I have a 45'' 10 year old perjection there now. I have tons of room. We sit about 15' from the wall that the TV will go.
I want to go bigger, wide of course. How much bigger? That depends on hom much. I dont want to go over 2k, Closer to $1500 would be better.
The room is very open. There is a large window in the wall to the right of the TV.
I watch a lot of sports. Auto racing (F1), Football, Baseball.
Movies are my next biggest item I watch.

Okay. The best value you're going to get here is a rear projection CRT tv much like the one you have now, but updated... You can look at Fry's or Costco to see what they have, but I do have a nice Mitsubishi WS55517 if you're interested...
http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/common/getfile.asp?uuid={F5A52A80-24AF-49DF-A87A-D3060F781CC8}
You may be able to find something nice in a Hitachi as well...
As far as newer technology, you can look at the Sony rear projection LCD's like the KDFE50A10. There's also a Samsung HLR5067W.
If you want pricing, you're more than welcome to PM me...

What is this rainbow effect?
Because DLP tv's use a colorwheel that spins at extremely hi rpm to display the color reflected from the chip that contains a little over 900,00 actuated mirrors, there is not a constant color accross the screen. Some people notice color seperation some people don't. Samsung doubled the colors on the wheel and increased the frequency and rpm to which it spins. Most people never notice the artifact, but there are some who do.

If you are not going to watch that much HD, I would go with a CRT base RPTV. Standard defenition looks better on CRT base displays and when properly calibrated, they look better than any microdisplay out there.

About 2K with a $85 kickback because I have the COSTCO black card, (biz account).
6 month return-for-any-reason policy too.
