But I see the work and the wife tells me about the school work and she is extremely impressed with how dilligent the teachers are. The entire school staff is very caring and conerned. It was pretty cool when we moved there from Leucadia in 79 but now, you can have it, waayyy too crowded. There are more beaches in LJ than just "Children's Pool." The Shores are just minutes away. Maybe 15 minutes to PB and Tourmaline, less if the stoplights are green. :)

Since my back surgery, I have some titanium in there that is really making life in the Sierras not fun when the weather changes. I always thought that "barometer" stuff people used to talk about who had parts replaced was a wives tale.
Not anymore.
I was in LHC a couple of weeks ago, visiting friends on the road trip home from the midwest with my son, who is now a civilan after three years of active duty in the Army. I looked around at LHC for the first time as maybe a place to retire to. My buddy introduced me to lots of local hot-rodder types, nice guys with the same interests as I have; cars, boats, guns, etc.
It is a real possibilty in the next 2 years or so.
My wife and I have lived in NorCal for over 28 years, but I have to do something about winter. Life is too short to be miserable.
I would have liked to have done the 30yrs. 3%@50 the other PERS folks have mentioned, but that just isn't in the cards. I am gonna be forced to go out on an Industrial Disability Safety Retirement with 26.75 years of service in.
It makes my wife and I chuckle to read of folks struggling to accept the slower pace and lifestyle in LHC.
For us, it would be a faster pace. Here, there are no malls for 50 miles, no Walmart/Home Depot/etc. for 50 miles. Nearest neighbors' house is about 350 yards away.
Moving off of 11 acres and onto a City Lot is a big change. Having a neighbor close enough to impact my life in any manner whatsoever is another.
My son might be there before I am, he loved it when we visited. He is going to be in Reno for the next 10-18 months or so usning his G.I. Bill getting certified as a HVAC-R tech. We heard radio ads down there from companies looking for techs, and he just may go.
Me...I'm still thinkin' about it. I can't imagine being happier anyplace else than here during the summer, but I just don't want to spend the rest of my life dreading the onslaught of winter.

You did your time and be proud of it. I still think it should be mandatory after 20 w/ full benies (I know I'll get flamed for this one, but oh well). Is your first 50% going to be tax free? if so you should be fine. Just make sure you get a good amount for your back. If you haven't already done so, get an attorney. The new worker comp laws suck

That would be hard to accept, nice to have some room in between neighbors no matter how well you get along with them. Also living in the sierras man that would be a blast, no trout fishing in Lake Havasu at least none worth while. As far as the winters go move to Bishop Its the high desert and a great place to be at. Or do the rv thing and just when you get burned out on one place head off to the other place, I will never stop going to the sierras we go twice every year, and its so nice to get away from the rat race and yes even take a break from havasu. Sierras so cals rocky mountains

Thanks. I am proud of it, but this just ain't the way I planned to go out, ya know? I agree on the 20 and out, I really think the $ the agencies would save in the long run would beat the cost of treating the cumulative injury crap like I have had to deal with.
The first 50% is tax free, then they add a percentage on top of the base pay, and some other hocus-pocus math stuff, using my longevity pay, Advanced POST% and POST Supervisory%, etc. I have a good attorney, nobody should ever go through this without one.
My injury date for the record is 10-01-2003. Arnold screwed the cops when he tweaked the W/C laws, my case won't settle until they get all the insurance carriers to understand that they cannot back-apply the new stuff to people who filed long before the changes went into place.
cc;
If I gcould figure out a way to have a house down there and keep mine up here, I probably would. We will look into perhaps renting a theoretical home we might purchase in Havasu out during the summer, and coming back north. The problem with that is this place up here doesn't exactly lend itself to being unoccupied for 4-6 months, particularly during winter. I have a second son that will be a senior in H.S. next year, after he graduates and decides what he wants to do with himself maybe he will want to stay up here and live at home for free in exchange for maintaining the place.

Flying bowtie, I can tell you for a fact that your bones and stuff will feel better living here. After almost 30 years in constuction, most of it operating heavy equipment and the fact that I'm older than dirt I have lots of joints (no wisecracks please) that during even our winters ache like hell. In short, warmer weather is what I like and feel much better. BUT it does get hot here, make no mistake about that, good luck! NSF
