So I'm driving through Hollywood last night at about 6:45 PM on La Brea. Mind you I'm driving my truck like a pussy cat 35 in a 35 same lane the whole time etc... I pass this LAPD motor cop who has some other pour shmo pulled over, 3 blocks later and who do you think is giving me the evil eye and waving his finger at me to pull over. well to make a long story short I ask him what I'm being pulled over for, and he says in his best A$$hole tone illegally tinted and no mud flaps. WTF is that all about.

Window tinting on the two front side windows is illegal, that's what it is all about.

i got a ticket in the IE for the same thing years ago.. in redlands.. seems alot of cities don't like seeing lifted trucks or even trucks with big tires without mudflaps. i quit tinting my side windows years ago, it always gives the police another excuse to pull you over.

Got a warning for the trailer hitch ball mounted on my bumper. It blocks my license plate. Law reads that it, license plate, cannot be blocked. I never knew it, but the ball mounted on the bumper is illegal when not towing....... It's rusted on, so I'll work at getting it off there this weekend..
When younger I was ticketed for tint, but I knew it was wrong and took the punnishment.
Oh well...

Guess what, you broke the law. Actually both of those laws, no front window tint and mud flaps are Good laws. I would bet you wouldn't think the mud flap thing is CS right after the truck in front of you thorws a rock in your window. As far as the window tint.. its two fold: 1 is so you can see out at night and 2 is so cops can see in. Think thats CS... do a traffic stop at night in south central...
Never fails to amaze me out how ppl whine about getting a ticket, when they know what they are doing is wrong. GIve the guy a break he was just doing his job.

I got a bullshit ticket once. He wrote me up for having Az plates and a Ca license then told me to take it up with the judge. It was funny seeing him flip thru his little book trying to find what he could write me up for. My windows were down so he also made me roll them up to see if they were tinted. When I asked him why he pulled me over he said it was because I didn't use my signal pulling out of the parking lut which was bullcrap because I always do and he was over a hill and couldn't have seen it anyway. I did get out of the ticket but can't tell you how I did it for fear of being reprimanded in public. :crossx:

Exactly! I got pulled over for window tint earlier this year, got my fix-it ticket, and took the punishment since I know it is illegal. But I've still got my windows tinted, it's a risk I'm willing to take. The point is, sure, maybe the law is lame, but it's still THE LAW. I find it incredibly lame to criticize a traffic cop for doing his/her JOB.

Fair enough, I think my point was that if I was driving like a jerk to fast changing lanes back and fourth etc... fine I will take the add on's every time and say sorry. but to be pulled over for just this seams like a waist of his time and our tax dollars. but the law is the law I guess

We're driving around in trucks and SUVs, sporting limo tinted windows, 20"-24" bling wheels, looking like Snoop and the pimp doggies, and get miffed when the Cop pulls you over for having or doing something illegal, thinking that they should be doing something more important, like taking care of the gang/drug/violence problem.
Maybe they ARE trying to do something about the gang/drug/violence problem.
Ever think about it that way?

Cops pull over people who look like they will pay their bills. Guys with big bling trucks most likely have some money to burn (or are just careless with it).
Go to traffic court if you want to see some real life racial profiling. Every god damned white person gets the book thrown at them, because most likely they will pay their fine, anyone else that looks like they wont (and I wont mention names) gets a light slap on the hand or a super long extension. I have seen it over and over. I used to work at Superior court. It made me sick, I quit.
It's a business folks, disguised as a justice system with lame brained toadie cops thinking they are saving the world by pinching you for tinted windows.

I have often wondered how ...local budget shortfalls.......perhaps money ...wasted by elected officials....would influence how many bullshit tickets and harassment stops on citizens get made.
And before any board cops blow a cork.....I am on the side of cops...and rules and regulations and accountability........but if you wanted to make an issue of seldom used laws......you probably could write tickets ....day and night...but you dont........and crime rates continue to rise....but at the very least ....we have less tint and bumper height violators to deal with.... :p

Right. If you want to eliminate bullshit tickets, go to court EVERY TIME you get a ticket. I do. Make them work for their money. If everyone did this, the system would collapse.

First off, I admire the majority of law enforcement. They have a tough job and put their a$$es on the line every day.
My problem is there are too many Barneys and and not enough Andys.
Now my question: How many off duty cops have been pulled over and showen their badge to avoid a ticket the average guy would have been issued?
Just curious

Why do we have chicken shiat traffic laws anyway?
Blame them all on traffic accident investigators and civil litigators.
When investigations show that accidents were caused by (pick one or more):
Raised trucks (decapitation injuries from over riding normal height vehicles)
No mudflaps (broken windshields, swerving to avoid debris kicked up from tires)
Tinted windows (didn't see the other driver)
Inattention (Talking on the cell phone, eating a big mac, putting on make-up)
etc
etc
etc
Not to mention the multi-million dollar lawsuits derived from the above accident examples.
Cops don't sit around thinking of ways to harass people or come up with seemingly un-needed or ridiculous laws. There are other factors forming the basis for the legislatures enacting such laws.
And failure to enforce them CAN be the basis for the Police Departments to get sued. Even though most of those suits are ultimately dismissed, defending against them can cost almost as much as the suit itself.
I, for one, believe that some laws are unnecessary. Mostly because they are covered under other statutes. Take teak-dragging. That should be covered under the careless, reckless, negligent operation laws. But some defense attorney convinced some judge that it doesn't apply, since it's not specifically spelled out in the law. POOF A new law.
Cell phones when driving. Already covered under careless or inattentive driving laws. Nope. Another attorney and another judge. POOF Another new law.
Legislators pass laws. We only enforce them, and are not in the position to choose which ones we will enforce and which ones we won't. We do the job we were hired to do, and enforce the laws the voters (through their elected officials) enacted.
If not enforced, the laws will go away. Arizona used to have a front license plate law, but it was seldom, if ever, cited. The legislators realized they could cut MVD costs by eliminating the front plate and cutting the plate manufacturing costs in half. No big deal, since it wasn't a safety item, but an example of what may happen when certain laws aren't enforced.
They can also be used to get major cases thrown out. If an officer stops a load vehicle for tinted windows and finds 3 child molesters with kiddy porn, 2 adolescent girls, explosives and cocaine disguised as peppermint lifesavers, the defense attorney will go back into that officer's records and see how many tinted window citations he's issued. If there are few or none, there is a strong chance the evidence will be thrown out, since he could convince a judge or jury that the officer used the offense as a ruse to deprive the drug dealing pervert of his "rights", rather than enforcing a bonafide safety issue.
There's a lot more to things like this than just some cop with a woodie for window tint.

I got pulled over south of Reno this past summer by Nevada Highway Patrol for 70 in a 55. Took the ticket. Mailed in the fine. Case closed.
I had my badge, but why bother. I did it. Time to cough up the dough. Had to file a report with my Department when I got back, besides. Would badging the trooper save me some money, time and paperwork.
Yes.
But I wouldn't feel right about it, since it wouldn't be right. One ticket more than makes up for all the times I may have been pushing the limit and wasn't stopped.
I also don't buy getting badged by other officers, since I pretty much have my mind made up on the course of action (Cite, Warning, etc), before I even make contact with the driver.
I don't appreciate other officers putting me in that position, especially for more serious violations, such as DUI, any more than they would appreciate me putting them in those situations

I know what was really up though. He saw a white guy in a nice truck and was just tryin' to find something wrong. That's why he wrote me for the speed. Trying to keep the white man down, that's what it was really about. ;)

Arizona's windshield crack law only applies if it impairs the view of the driver. There's no time limit or grace period, but every ticket I've ever issued or seen issued for this has been a Repair Order.
Speaking of Fix-its, I don't know how California handles it, but failure to comply with a repair order (Fix-It) in AZ is another violation in itself. A misdmeanor, that could result in arrest.
Those who just forge a name or get a "buddy" who's a cop to sign them off, without correcting the problem, could be opening a can of worms for themselves and the "buddy".
