I want to do a trip to one of these lakes this year. I'm leaning towards Mohave because I would like to run up to the damn. Is there only certain months you can do this because of water level? Are they real strict on noise at either lakes? Any advice would be great.

Mohave is my favorite lake. Been going there for 20 years or more. Mead can be an ocean when the wind picks up, thus the question about what size boat you have. Both have their place. Both great lakes!
Mohave has the proximity to Laughlin where there is great entertainment and food.
Good luck!

I like mead with the that size of a boat. Lake mead is big with lots of place's to go and in the basin you get some big water there. Mohave is alot of fun aswell with lots of cove's to hang in. Either way water depth is not realy a issue.

Awww, CT. You gave love to my lake! :p We have had cats (29'-38') on Lake Mead for the past four years and it's a great lake for any boat as long as the weather behaves. It can and does get like the ocean when the wind picks up, hence the OSS holding an event there in September. Your boat would be great on either lake and I have to mention that Lake Las Vegas is only 8 miles from Lake Mead Marina and they have an upscale casino and many places to eat and free jazz concerts and a GREAT wine bar that we frequent. Sorry had to do a little marketing for our friends out there. :rollside: Enjoy your trip no matter which lake you go to.

Sandy beaches are more easily located at Mohave than Mead. The water level has turned most of the sandy beaches into stinky mud.

I do both... I really like Mead better. Easier to launch / retrieve, Nice group of people there... ALso, Lake Las Vegas has a Ritz Carlton and a Hyatt (I actually prefer the Hyatt there with boat parking) that is TOP NOTCH... It is 10 to 15 away from the lake. Mojave is toooooooooo busy at the ramps during the weekend.
Go to Mead, I'll buy ya a beer...

Wow, thanks for all the help guys. :) I have heard launching your boat on Mohave is madness. We have some friends in Vegas so Lake Mead sounds good. Did I read it right that at the marina there is a casino and great places to eat?

Only been to Lake Mead once, but loved it and hated that there was not enough time to see it all. I think you need to be on the water for seve days straight to see it all. Mohave is not as big, but has some real nice coves, I camped in one one year. I don't think you will be disapointed with either one.

Did I read it right that at the marina there is a casino and great places to eat?Not IN the marina, but close to. Lake Mead and Las Vegas Bay Marinas are the only ones close to Lake Las Vegas. You can check out what's there, here. (http://www.lakelasvegas.com)
Hope this helps. The water is down again (but still not where it was and the launch ramps were all added onto when it was down so they're in great shape) but that uncovered a lot of sand in places.

Wow, I was not aware of that. Guess I will really have to get out there and do more exploring. I am thinking of going to Mohave during the week in July, how is the launch ramp during the middle of the week?

Of course some of us have slips so we avoid the launch lines all together :) Nothing like rolling in about 9:30 and passing all the boats, parking your truck and strolling down to your boat in the slip.
Agreed, that's how we do it at Mead. :rollside:

This is true...my buddy has twin Merc500 efi's with Imco Gatlin mufflers and came into Lake Mead marina on one engine and still got a ticket. The ranger was a moron and was not clear on the test parameters but gave him a ticket anyway for 92db...And to top it off he ran the ranger boat into the side of my buddys boat and left a nice scratch in the gel.

This is a no brainer IMHO with your boat. I've navigated both and for many years in both small and larger boats. Mead smokes Mohave as Mohave smokes Havasu. Powell smokes them all.
I need to go to LOTO! :)

Oh well...
Mead is only bigger because they are both "regulating lakes" .

We've only been looked at once... If you don't do anything stupid you should be fine. If you're worried launch out of Echo Bay, no problems there.

I've never done Powell, but I prefer Mead to Mohave and Havasu. We have been all over Mead and prefer launching at Calville. Cruising the 50+ miles to Sandy Point is my favorite, although we did not get out to Mead last year so I don't know what kind of shape it's in. Some of the smoothest water I have ever been on was Mead. We have cruised from one side to the other barely seeing a ripple, of course the opposite can also be true. I love the Greg Basin from Temple Bar east. You can always find your own cove even on the holidays. I have been on the lake in 17, 23, 25, and 29ft boats. Most days you'll be fine on any size, but Mead can make large boats feel small.
Mohave can be a PITA launching at Kathrines. We started driving up to Cottonwood to launch, but that defeats being close to Laughlin. The run to the dam is really cool. If you do launch at Kathrines and head to the dam the basin can get windy and rough (not for a 36).
Good luck.

Actually, I think Powell is bigger.....:D it all depends on how you measure it. Powell has over one thousand miles of shoreline, more then the west coast of the United States (all those coves and fingers). I think Mead holds more water, Mohave might be longer from end to end...
Ok, who started this pissing contest?
