In addition to a fatal three-vehicle accident that took the lives of two Lake Havasu City residents, an armed robbery occurred Monday morning at the Red Robin restaurant, resulting in the arrest of two Arizonan men.
Additionally, police headquarters fielded a record number of phone calls for a holiday weekend. Residents, visitors, and businesses placed 1,354 calls to the department over the four-day weekend, which officially began on Friday at 12:00 a.m. and ended on Monday at midnight. The previous high for calls placed was 1,215, set in 2003.
Lake Havasu City Police investigated an armed robbery at the Red Robin restaurant on Swanson Avenue Monday morning in response to an employee's call at 8:14 a.m. Police reported that no one was injured and the robbers made off with an undetermined amount of money in the incident. Two male suspects, David Bounds, 32, of Phoenix, and Larry Wilson of Mesa, Ariz., were taken into custody Monday afternoon at the Howard Johnson hotel on London Bridge Road after trying to escape out of a hotel window.
Bounds was charged with armed robbery, five counts of kidnapping, five counts of aggravated assault and five counts of unlawful imprisonment in Lake Havasu City Municipal Court on Tuesday. Bond was set at $4 million and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for June 9.
Wilson was charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, five counts of aggravated assault and one count of unlawful imprisonment in court on Tuesday. His bond was set at $3 million with a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 9.
Acting Police Chief Dan Doyle held a brief press conference Tuesday morning, a gathering he would like to see following every major holiday weekend so that updates and information can be disseminated to the community.
With officers arresting 261 people over the holiday, one person at the conference asked if the arresting process could be expedited to free up the department's resources for more pressing matters.
The process for booking has been scaled down, Doyle responded. A citation is completed with a Form 4. We do need to complete a minimum amount of paperwork to get [the officers'] probable cause documented.
With increased patrols in the Bridgewater Channel, OUI arrests did go up. Ten individuals were arrested for operating their boats under the influence.
That number will keep rising, Doyle commented. As people start realizing that we're increasing our patrols, hopefully that number will go down.
Figures from the final arrest report include:
* 125 instances of underage consumption/possession of alcohol
* 24 disorderly conduct citations
* 14 counts of indecent exposure
* 10 Operating Under the Influence counts
* 9 marijuana possession arrests
* 9 instances of giving false information to an officer
Doyle did point out that if a person is convicted three time of indecent exposure, it would result in their mandatory registration as a sex offender.
The LHC Fire Department fielded 128 calls, 24 of which were lake-related. That figure decreased from last year's Memorial Day weekend. Firefighters responded to three brush fires, all of which officials determined to be human-caused.
On a positive note, no calls to the fire department dealt with carbon monoxide levels near the lake.
