SACRAMENTO (AP) -- The Senate is advancing a bill that would let the state issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, over the objections of Republicans including Governor Schwarzenegger.
Senator Gil Cedillo says his bill is needed as the deadline approaches for California to comply with new federal regulations for identification documents adopted after the 2001 terrorist attacks.
But the Senate rejected an amendment that would have met the federal rules without letting illegal immigrants drive.
The measure now goes to the Assembly.
This is Cedillo's latest attempt in eight years to pass an immigrant driver's bill.
