I think that the majority of people with trucks and big boats don't just go out and buy them...takes credit, and I am guessing in most cases people refinanced their house for all their toys...at leaset I am assuming that since I know people that have done that.
I definately couldn't afford a boat /truck like that and I bought my house 3 years ago and am working as an RF/Microwave Electrical Engineer and feel that I make more money than 60% of the people.

Robin, I think you will find most of us are in the middle of the big totem pole. When I go to Newport and see all the 2-8 million $ houses with 80' boat docks with 1-5 mil boats I think the same thing ( I wonder what those people do) My self I own a water treatment co in Orange County, and trust me there's nothing glamorous or very profitable about it, we all just cut out our own piece of the pie.

General Contractor here. When we moved here 2 years ago (after cashing out of Vegas), I bought 3 pieces of "resort type" property instead of putting all of our money toward our home purchase (against my wife's wishes) and now have a large monthly house payment.
HOWEVER, the properties have doubled and I am in the process of selling 1 or 2 of them. I will then pay off my boat and home and own my new home 100% free and clear (as well as everything else).
That's when the fun begins..."Hello, Eliminator?..."
It's pretty rare that I am 100% right and my wife is 100% wrong...and she's happy about it  :)

Robin,
Take your first Mc Donalds pay check, and register a business "name" with your state (Arizona its $50). The rest is all experience and networking with other people.
To start you will have two jobs:
1) Mc donalds
2) Your Business
Never burn a bridge that you crossed.
No one is going to show you how to make the big bucks (not even mom and dad).
Your friends will think you can't do it. Your enemeies are scared you will.
You will eventually, very very very slowly see a small profit. Fine tune that small profit into something bigger.
Live cheap.
I'm colleged educated, but a degree only opens the doors.

I’m a “Motivational Speaker”…..(aka…business owner)……
All day long I tell people to move their butt or their fired……
Just remember this…..
Just working hard doesn’t cut it anymore…..you have to work smart as well….
Very rarely does an opportunity just fall on your lap; you have to make them happen….
Everyone who is waiting around for their turn will always be waiting…..
Most people take what they think is the safe route, like “Large Company” or “Public Service”, which isn’t necessarily any safer in today’s world….
If you’re looking for that low to mid six figure income, you’ll need skin in the game…..
Not many of those “Really high paying, large company, low risk” jobs left these days….
It’s all about risk…..Oh yea…..and timing…….”right place right time” stuff…..
It’s not just luck…….Put yourself in the right place at the right time…..
Sorry about the “Broken Home” thing, but shake it off, don’t make it a crutch….
Don’t be afraid to take chances……..
Good luck young man…….

Got layed off from my job as a machine operator about a month ago. I'm living off severence money....Basically I'm being a bum this summer and enjoying the hell out of it! This is made easier by the fact that I'm not married (for real anyway) and the only major bill I have is my house payment, which is cheap as hell compared to you folks out west. Past couple weeks I've been seriously thinking about starting my own little carpentry/handyman business. I worked as a carpenter for several years before I worked at the factory and I've had several people offer me little jobs already when they found out I was laid off...

Heres the deal your young you need to gather as much intelectual property for yourself as you can. just be a spounge and absorb as much info as you can. as far as as finances go its pretty simple, figure out compound interest and then make it work for you. pay your bills on time and establish good credit. dont waiste time doing drugs.

I am a general contractor.... I have a masters in math that I never use....Still I am glad I got it. In a past life I did use it... just got sick of the rat race... The most important thing you can do is find something you love( alot of ppl figure that out thier last year of college... when it's too late to change thier major...)No matter how much or how little you make you will be happier over all. I took ~40k a year pay cut from my last job, but i don't miss the money one bit. At the end of the day all that really matters is that you are happy. You need to do 3 things:
1 stay is school/or become a apprentice.
2 find some thing you love to do and do it.
3 Tell every 1 that says " that will never work" to fook off.

Well......
First of all....... www.dictionary.com .......
Or, type all your posts in Microsoft Word, then copy & paste them.....
YOU need to care that your spelling sucks.....
Right or wrong, people will judge you on it....
Your poor spelling will become an issue if you choose the private sector.....
Next, what would you make a government career your first choice....Give me a good reason....
The real money is NOT working for the government.....
It maybe a decent living, with some decent perks, but it's not where the real money is....
Many, or most government employees feel under paid, over worked and are just putting the time and waiting for retirement......They do just enough to get through the day.....Their not looking to rock the world.....
And, don't think your going to waltz into any government decent job without higher learning...
As some have said here already, find someone who will teach you a skill, maybe construction related, or in the service area, learn it REAL well, then set out on your own.
Small business always represents the most potential and growth in the job market....
Good luck with the driving thing too.....

I'm kind of in a similar situation as Robin, except I'm a bit older (21). I was highly considering opening my own business. I know the general consensus is to open a business in something you really love and know. Well......I really love boats and the whole boating lifestyle but I have no experience or training in it. I know there are many areas of the boating industry I can get into but then the question of "start-up" revenue comes into play. So the two questions I have for my post are pretty much:
1. What is a good solid profession in the boating industry?
2. How can I get start-up money for the business?

Go get a job with one of the local LA area builders.....
Learn the whole building process......every little detail......
From the "shiat work" up to the rigging......
Make a name for yourself........
Just by showing up on time everyday and not complaining of the task you've been given will show a lot of character.....
Once you've made a name for yourself people will search you out with opportunities......
Then, down the road look into to partnering with someone, or buying into an existing builder......
Your only 21......which is closer to an "egg", than retirement, so you have plenty of time on your side.....
Set some goals and work towards them.......

I know the general consensus is to open a business in something you really love and know.....
This is not true. You do not have to love it. You do not have to know it. I started two business is 2004. One of which I had no background in, I truly hated, but built it for a purpose. That business was the primary money maker for me last year, by a long shot.
Some might even say you need to have vision and good planning. Well, I had vision and planned, but the business took off in a way I never expected nor planned.
So what is the key? Recognizing opportunity. And working your ass off. Yes, working smarter will be a major factor, but doing what ever it takes and a never quit attitude with some good luck thrown in. Luck is definitely a factor, but you need to learn how to make yourself more lucky. Getting out and doing it increases you odds of having luck cross you path. And when it does, jump on it. Most business owners go through a neccesary phase called rugged individualism....meaning working hard and getting the job done right by doing it yourself. Eventually, whether it is in a few months or a few years, that type of effort will find a ceiling, then you need to start to work smarter.
A good friend of mine has a very successful and lucrative business that he hates with a passion. He sells airbrushes and airbrush accesories to the nail business (finger nail and toe nail). He is the #1 company in his industry. He hates it with a passion. But he knows how to get the job done and what it takes to be profitable.
Love what you do? what ever. See the opportunity and make it happen. My family is what drives me in life and quite a bit of ego. I enjoy kicking people's asses in an industry I hate( the mortgage industry if you are wondering). Kind of like Happy Gilmore when he says "You know the pathetic thing is, I just learned how to play golf, and you have been doing this your entire life" as he kicks Shooter's ass. While Happy Gilmore is a fictional story, the message is, you can do anything when you have your priorities in line. He was doing it to save his grandmother's house. I do it for the future of my family. And, that ass kicking thing. :D

Working for the government is ok. We all must pay are dues in life. Just don't make it your career. Join the Navy, see the world if you must, but if you want to own that big boat and tow rig, you got to make it on your own.
Get the business license, then fiqure out what to sell. Believe me...getting the business license is the first part to being sucessful. Take that first step.

I'm in construction. My parents were good enough to pay for my BS in engineering. The US Army paid for my MBA. I worked rough necking in the oil fields to truck driving along the way. I made some good investments, mostly in real estate. Buying and selling homes at the right time. I eventually worked for a large company in LA and worked my way up to VP. Learned alot along the way. Bought my own company 5 years ago and built it up to what it is today. I love going to work every day.

Robin,
It's all in your attitude towards life. Some people will be successful in everything that they do.
Always try and do your best whenever and wherever you are. Take pride in what you do regardless of what you are doing. Set goals then work to achieve them. You're going to have to work hard and make sacrafices, but if you think ahead, try to set a plan, you won't have to do it for too long.
Hang around successful people and ask many questions. You will learn from other people's mistakes. Don't make the same mistake twice.
Don't pay interest! As much as you will want to sign on the dotted line for something, before you do, add up the total amount of interest you will pay, it will shock you. Also pay cash for almost everything. It's much harder to fork over a wad of 20's than it is to just swipe a card.
Here's a good example:
Get a job with a company as a pool man. Learn the trade. Save your money and eventually buy a pool route (maybe the person selling it will let you make payments, double up on your payments and get it paid off).
Now you're in business for yourself. Learn how to make repairs, clean filters, replace lights, plumbing, etc... Surround yourself with good people (masons, electricians, plumbers, etc..) they will make you look good.
Save your money, then you can buy more pool routes and hire employees. Get into remodeling pools, then get into building pools, etc...
Whew......
OK, I gotta get back to work :)
Good luck!!!

Go figure the guy with the baddest boat has the best advice.
Determine your goals in life. If money and material things are the priority, then Kroozin and Shaken Not Stirred are the ones to follow. Self employment reaps the biggest rewards.
Do me a favor and stay out of govt.(safety) jobs. It's a calling, it's not for the money. You either want it or you don't. Most of all, you must enjoy what you do, otherwise you'll have to spend lots of money on toys to compensate for all the time you hate going to work every day and for making up for the shallowness that what you do does not contribute to society in any measureable way other than numbers on a paycheck.

I'm a real estate agent and like most everyone has mentioned nothing comes easy. I've had some type of job since I was about 12. Started out with a paper route and then mowed all the neighbors lawns and house sat while they were out of town. Believe it or not I bought myself several dirtbikes and raced moto-x and R/C cars for a number of years doing this. My parents could not afford to do these things for me so I did it myself. From then I worked several part time jobs and went to school. Once I got into college I worked full time and went to school full time. I graduated from CSUF with a business degree after 6 years of college and started into the real estate field. It took me about 2-3 years of working anywhere from 60-80 hours a week including weekends to build a clientelle of business. Now I am a pretty successful realtor and I love my job/career.
Bottom line is hard work will pay off and getting yourself a college education will help you work smarter along the way.

That is a cool story. At the end of the day it's about, having a good head on your shoulders, getting educated, having a driving ambition, not being afraid of making sacrifices and having a willingness to do what it takes.

I finance small businesses, from equipment to commercial real estate. I don't have money, I just give it out.
So you would be the one to talk to for financing if I ever figure out a business to open.

Living within your means and saving for instead of financing for is where it is at. We dont have any debt, have a house in Vegas, waterfront land in Texas, as well as investing regularly. When you see it and you dont have cash, you dont need it. Most Americans buy what ever they want because they can. Go ahead and do that if you want to pay for it twice. Sometimes you have to finance something. Go ahead and do it, but pay it off quickly. 2 years of high payments and less interest paid is far better than 5-7 years of payments and tons of interest. Of course you do. You sign the front of the checks, get to hang out with the old man, stir shit up on the internet, polish your toe ring, and watch out your window for stealth attacks on your boat while it's sitting in the shop. What's not to love??? :D :D :D
Watching out for Jordy to show up at the office isn't exactly my "fun time!" And calling to see if I am there or not doesn't sit warm with me either!! LOL

I have a BS degree in Biology...but I have worked over 10 years in the construction industry. Make double the money doing this, since there is a lot of overtime! I recently quit and have started with the Railroad for 6 months!

Look in the construction industry and work alongside some good mentors!

Well "LR"....
Lets look at the original question.....Shall we.....
HEy all, I am really curious to learn what most of you guys are doin in your career to make the kinda money to make it in this country with a nice boat and turck and a nice house..... I am amazed to see how many people around here can aford all the toys and stuff..
I am thinken about what career I am going to get into... Any Suggestions?
So, as we can see, the question was..."I am really curious to learn what most of you guys are doing in your career to make the kinda money to make, have a nice boat and turck and a nice house".....
I did not see him ask...."Hey...I am really curious to learn what most of you guys are doin in your career to make average money, work many hours & weekends, spend less time with my kids, have an old jetboat, a truck and a trailer on the river in the crack district".....what are you guys doin ?
Yes.....I'm fortunate.....I make decent money, that I happen work REALLY hard for....oh, and take quite a bit of risk for everyday.........
Unlike you, I'm not jaded by my profession and by the people I associate with each day......again, yes, I am fortunate......
Yep!.....I am privileged to spend more than 20 weekends a year with my wife & kids at the lake.......
spend lots of money on toys to compensate for all the time you hate going to work.......
Nice try angry bitter guy!.......I guess you get to be the "Line Leader" in todays "Haters Parade".......
You just don't get it do you?.......I have a decent career, average boat and a decent house in Havasu......These are all tools......These tools allow me to spend wonderful long sunny days with my family & friends in Havasu.....
Which, I may add, is the point of it all...........To spend quality time with family & friends.......
.....and for making up for the shallowness that what you do does not contribute to society in any measureable way other than numbers on a paycheck......
Well.......Another sweet statement you philanthropist you!!........You know nothing about me, but continue to make stupid remarks....
So....Let me explain this again so that even YOU can understand it.....I could lose everything tomorrow and it would just be an inconvenience.....I would go out, get a job and be back in Havasu in a season or two......The money, boat, houses and stuff are tool......YOU TOOL !!!!
So....You keep loving YOUR job since YOUR the only one making a difference around here.......and I'll keep loving mine.....

If you want to be a multi millionaire befor the age of 25 follow these simple instructions.
The day after you graduate high school go to your Insurance Agency (Farmers, State Farm, Equitable, one of the big boys) and get hired on as an assistant. Learn the insurance business of selling insurance. Work 12-16 hours a day 6 days a week and after 7 years of doing this you will never have to work again. The renewals will just keep flowing in month after month and you will be sitting on your boat at the lake.

1. When I do decide on a certain industry how do I go about getting money to start up the business? (I've got no credit card debt and I owe about $5,000 on my truck so I'm assuming I have good credit).
2. Would it be better to buy an existing business or start one from scratch?

Chiropractor.
Great job, great hours, a lot of school, big student loan payments.
Going to school for a profession is great but make sure you know that it is what you want to do. It is difficult to start over with 150K hanging over your head with a big pay me sign beside it. It is even better if you know somebody in a profession that is successful and willing to give a helping hand after school is finished.
There are many ways to make money without spending the time in school though. There is a wealth of info in this thread alone. The one I think is most valuable is surround yourself with successful people/ hang out with successful/influential people. One of the best places for this is the golf course. It is kind of hard to get in with them unless you are good though.
I started out with 1 office in CO and sold after starting the 3rd and the wife got prgnant with our 1st kid.
We moved to CA and I have been semi retired for a while as the kids are growing up.
I started in the military, which is something I would recommend to anybody that doesn’t know exactly what they want. It helps you find out a lot about yourself and your interests outside of influence from friends and family.
Becoming acquainted with successful people and following up on those relationships has recently netted a huge windfall on a 3 day a week schedule. I can conceivably retire in 5 years and I am only 40.
Be honest with people and straight forward, don't let the temptation of easy money rule the way you live or do business and you will be successful.
The other thing that is a must, and has been invaluable to me, is the person you choose to spend the rest of your life with. They can make you or break you. Be sure or don’t do it. But make sure you do it at some point, because financial success is less than half of it, wife and family are the best part of it.

Wow Chris! I guess you're a little sore from the last verbal beating I gave you. I suppose I can understand that 20lb chip on your shoulder.
Where did you NOT see the COMPLIMENT to you and Kroozin? The guy wanted to know how to get nice stuff, if that's the priority, self employment is the way to go, period.
Take a deep breath, look down between your legs and make sure you still have a sack, and REREAD my post. Did I mention you as not being happy with your job? NO.
Let me rephrase: I don't care if you make 50k or 200k, if you're not happy with your job you (anyone) will have to compensate your unhappiness with stuff to take your mind off that unhappiness.
That's your problem Chris to take my post as against YOU.
As for the personal attacks, that's funny!
Let's see:
1. Own an old jet boat: Yes, I do, got me there! Like I could'nt afford something else? Right now, would'nt be prudent after the divorce but next year, no problem.
After the BS generalizations you made against cops as lazy last year, I did post on some cop sites that you were anti police and I know two guys skipped Advantage because of it. They bought a Lavey and an Ultra instead. Does it really matter? No. You represent a company just like I represent my department. Some don't like me, some don't like you and those perceptions have repercussions, that's life.
2. I live in the crack addict district. Let's see, Earp is simply the Ca. (Indian owned) side of Parker Strip down to Palo Verde. There's some crooks (no more than Havasu). I think the fact I had two CHP's, a San Berdo deputy, a Rampart Detective and myself in my 100 spot Mobile park may have had something to do with the fact nothing was stolen the six years I was there. Sure, I paid "rent" but I chose riverfront ease and quiet stretches of water over crowds and launching every day in Havasu. You think I could'nt afford a house in Havi? Think again.
3. I drive an "old" (is that what you posted?) truck: Well, an 04 F250 6" Donahoe/RBP turbo back/Banks Six Gun/DVD/Bilstein hooped 7100 series shocked truck with 30k miles does qualify as old. Damn, you got me again!/LOL. Oh, and I only have 18" KMC's , I should hold my head down in shame/Ha!
As for tool, you beat me to it on that one Chris, I never posted any attacks on you or what you own.
Funny guy you are, you try to sell boats (service industry) as a hobby and bash potential customers of a certain profession. I remember when you tried to play nice in PM's later last year. I post one comment on the importance of enjoying a job and you twist it into an all out attack on those that get ahead in life through self employment. And my post was never aimed at you. Wake up, calm down and realize the mistake you made.
As for me, I'm not a tool, I'm an asshole. I admit it. You think my signature "No Bull, All Bite, Set it up , Let's fight" is for sh*t's and giggles?
I run by a different set of motivations and job satisfaction, that is true. But I put my money where my mouth is.
Being I'm now a Sergeant, I'll be more reserved in this next paragraph:
If anything I say ever really gets to you and you want to take it to the next level, I'm available to answer the call. I have plenty of T/O time to meet up. Don't get all hissy cry baby and start saying I'm the big bad cop. This is about Me and YOU, period, not about my job. Otherwise, you're all talk and no bite. I"ll take any other banter as another wuss behind a keyboard and see that your word is'nt worth the mouth it came out of.
Or:
You can "man up", admit you took my post the wrong way, and admit it on this thread. I complimented you Chris, take the chip off the shoulder, let the past rest where it is and chill out. Geez, sounds like some of the people that wrote to me on this board over the years/lol.

So.....
Tell me where to look for the compliment here ???
Determine your goals in life. If money and material things are the priority, then Kroozin and Shaken Not Stirred are the ones to follow. Self employment reaps the biggest rewards.
Most of all, you must enjoy what you do, otherwise you'll have to spend lots of money on toys to compensate for all the time you hate going to work every day and for making up for the shallowness that what you do does not contribute to society in any measureable way other than numbers on a paycheck.
And......
Did I mention any names here?.....Did I address this phrase to you personally?.....Did you read too much into it and assume I was talking about you directly?.........Could be quite a few people down river don't you think?.....Where did I say "OLD" truck?.........Where did I say YOU couldn't afford it?........I think someone else may have taken something wrong!......Only YOU can make yourself feel inferrior, no one else can....
Here's my statement......I don't see "LR" stated anywhere in here, do you?
"I did not see him ask....Hey...I am really curious to learn what most of you guys are doin in your career to make average money, work many hours & weekends, spend less time with my kids, have an old jetboat, a truck and a trailer on the river in the crack district".....what are you guys doin ?
And here is quite possibly the most stupid statement I've seen in some time....
Let me rephrase: I don't care if you make 50k or 200k, if you're not happy with your job you (anyone) will have to compensate your unhappiness with stuff to take your mind off that unhappiness.
Ya' know?......I REALLY don't have anything against you personally....REALLY!......Your a little confused at times, but probably an OK guy.....Your a passionate guy who loves what he does.....Good for you!
As far as "Bashing" a profession, C'mon....Please find this post for me.....I never bashed your profession or called you "Lazy"......Or anyone else for that matter......
If YOU say I took your post wrong, then I guess I did, cause' you wrote it and knew what you were trying to convey......So if I missed a compliment in there, well then I'm sorry.......
So now, let’s get to this part…….Shall we……..
Do you REALLY think that anything that was said here need to be….”Taken to the next level”?..........Are you serious?......Can you wrap your mind around this at all?......Are you telling me that two adults can’t have a difference in opinion on a boating forum without someone thinking it needs to get physical???.......I bet you could kick my ass in a second, but that’s never going to stop me from having an OPINION!......... It’s crap like this phrase below that makes you look bad, not me…..

Some great advise on this post
So far my RIDE-in-live is has been driven this way:
1st stay in school-finish high school and get a colleage degree9or complete a documented trade)-it will be a must- no more winging it with all the uneducated folks coming in from the world using up the govenments resources-YOU NEED AS MANY DOORS TO BE OPEN moving forward.
MONEY
-never, never, never (did I say never) borrow money on DEPRECIATING ASSETTS (if your really need-want IT-NOW, then either rent or lease).
-borrow (watch your interest) to the hilt on APPRECIATING ASSETTS(i.e. property in the smile states and a good education-a big asset). Stay away from vacation properties until you have established your self on your own residence and have aquired some equity.
FRIENDS
-Sorround your self with the right folks (either friends OR family)
-understand the motivation of your friends and most of all stay closer to your enemys
CAREER
-find a trade that you enjoy and just get passionate about it and do it really well-short-cuts will bite you every time!
Lastly, enjoy the folks that really love you, and cherrish every minute you are alive, it goes by really fast.
JUST GO FOR IT! :rollside:

Some, good advice on here.
What ever you decide to chose. Read " The richest man in babylon" You can get it paperback for around $5.00.
Education is what you make of it. I have met more then a few people with a degree that don't know sh!t, and a few H.S. drop outs that know how to make and keep tons of money.
Don't get caught up judging a book by its cover. More then a few people admit that the bling is all on credit, or the equity from their homes. This is commen IMHO.
If self employment is your goal just remember You will need to work at it 24-7 and make a lot of sacrifice before you can reap a reward.
Be aware of the true costs of everything, including your tax burden. Most offten its not how much you earn, but how much you keep.
I think Henry Ford said it best.
" One who fears faliure, limits his activities. Faliure is only the opportunity more intelligently to begin again."
Smart men can make a healthy living on either side of the coin weather its in public service or the private sector.
For what it's worth I am an old jet boat driving lake trailer park livin' old truck lovin' cop mistrustin' failed fire fighter can't spell, proper grammer butcher. Who figured out the dirty jobs that no one wants, pay pretty good!
I am a plumbing contractor. It's been real good to me.
Good luck, its a wild ride!

What ever you decide to chose. Read " The richest man in babylon" You can get it paperback for around $5.00.

I second that. Very basic but it works, I know because it worked for me.

Leave it to a salesman to spin it again to try to get out of what he wrote.
Chris, there is no doubt you aimed your diatribe at me. Once again I called you out on it and, once again, you pull the "Whoa is me, hey buddy, was'nt meant for you" card. You're so full of "Chris's world" that you can't even take a break for one second, become human, and admit you took a personal shot at someone because you read a statement the wrong way. You really need to read what you write and notice that you've been challenged on other stuff around this site as coming off with a self centered, arrogant attitude.
I admit, you are too funny, I give you a choice of black and white and you go into the grey area. That 's a good one.
Opinions are fine, but when you or anyone else makes a personal attack against me (you did, those three descriptors were from my profile), I'm gonna call you out every time. Sadly, you slithered out from any responsibility for what you wrote and flim flammed a response.
Whatever Chris, it simply shows everyone else here your inability to understand a post and talk smack at someone, then try to hide when they challenge you to back it up or admit you read it the wrong way.
Pathetic as usual.

it depends, mostly on how hard you have to work to get clients but try to start from scratch if you can......
I have a few questions. They are as follows:
1. When I do decide on a certain industry how do I go about getting money to start up the business? (I've got no credit card debt and I owe about $5,000 on my truck so I'm assuming I have good credit).
2. Would it be better to buy an existing business or start one from scratch?
