I have been riding for years Mainly dezert and tracks Starwest, Elsinore, Glen Helen...Lately on a Honda CRF450 or a Yamaha YZ426F. My buddies are sponsored So they always have an extra bike for me. I use to Own a 2002 KX125 and a 2003 CR250. All 4 bikes are great. I am going to get back into racing the Grand Prix races...La cerne, Glen Helen, 29 palms..etc.. ..I also use to do alot of big jumps...but I havent did this on a 4 stroke...I imagine there a little heavier...Kinda want the all around bike...Looking for opinions.

The GP's are designed around 4strokes now. If you want to be competitive, you should be on a 4.

I would imagine the weight difference on new bikes is about 10-15lbs, but I'm not sure. I have the CRF 450, before that I had YZF 426, and before that I had a CR 250. The CR was set-up for the desert and was a great bike, I'm not sure what the YZF was set-up for, but it was a terrible bike... really heavy, blew up the trans, terrible feel (probably could have dialed that in by changing suspension, bars, etc.) CRF is by far the best bike I have ever riden. I raced it in the desert and did one GP at Glenn Helen and it worked great in both, also did a little track riding and it feels great there as well, though it wears me out a lot quicker on the tracks than the 250F's. If you're interested I have a friend selling an 05 CRF 450R, it has very little use.

I was a 2smoke fan for years...swore I'd never ride a fourstroke but then I rode the newer fourstrokes....wow I was sold...takes a little while to get used to the power difference but now I'm hooked. If you get a chance try the 06 Yamaha YF 450F with the alum frame....best damn bike I have ever been on....light and nimble...tons of usable power, no huge hit like the older ones....simply the fastest easiest bike to go fast on I've ever ridden...bar none.

Don't waste your time with a 2-stroke....For 1, the resale is no bueno. And 2, you will not be competetive at local races (unless you are a pro in the intermediate class or intermidiate in the novice class....etc).
My last bike was the 04 CRF450 and now I have the 06 CRF450. Before that I rode 2 stroke RM's (250) and CR's (250). The 2-strokes dont compare to the 4-strokes.
I race some of the Big 6 and Worcs races and I also race local tracks. The weight is irrelevant. After getting used to the 4-stroke, you can whip it around just like a 2-stroke, plus your lap times will drop significantly.
I remember the first Supercross when everyone went to the 4-stroke. They looked like their necks were all broken, all stiff and sh*t....now they are whippin it upside down like the good old days of 2-strokes.

There is a reason why the the 2 stroke 250's are combined with the 4 stroke 450's. Cuz they are faster with the same displacement motors. But, for all around riding, go with the 4 bangers. Much easier and more turnkey. I personally ride a CR500 in the desert, but I like the big boys.

Yeah 06 is first year for the Yamaha Alum frame on the 450F. I rode my buddies last fall in Glamis......it flat out hauled a$$ and was so smooth I couldn't believe it and it was completely stock. Since then my buddy added a pipe and had the suspension done just for the hell of it(He works for corp Yamaha) I rode it again and I can't believe how bad a$$ that bike is. I rode an 06 CRF and the Yamaha back to back and the Yamaha was just amazing....now I'll admit the Honda's have been the best all around bike for the last few years....but now the 06 Yamaha has them beat hands down in my opinion.....you need to go ride one before you buy anything.
I've raced the Adelanto in the past, ride Glamis in the Winter, and Socal Mountains in the summer with the occational Socal track and high desert trip and I can't wait to get my hands on a new YZ450F, I'm waiting for the 07's to come out and then see which I like better. If I bought a bike today it would definately be the Yamaha.

Notalent. 4 stroke is the way to go. you sound like me, and the riding I do. I raced GPs for yrs on a KTM 2 stroke. Rode the Mammoth race track on the first year CRF450 and never looked back. The tech. is so impressive on the new four strokes its not even funny. I have rode every major four stroke brand 450. I own the CRF450 and love it. I've had 02', 03' and 05. The yamaha 06 is a very good bike. KX and RM have four speed trans and I just cant get used to that. I also currently ride alot of dezert, put IMS big tank, and "Scotts" steering dampener. and its really good. PM me for info on price. Oh and 07s will have fuel injection.

2 smokes are done- Anyone can go faster on todays 4 strkr than a 2. Roll on controlled power-liter than ever-less fatigue= ride longer faster. Especially for GP's, Worcs & such-I raced WoRCS Havasu & Taft and you wouldve got worn out on a pinger. Maybe arenacross fits a 2 stroker-Maybe.
If you can wait about 30 days the 07 Crf 450 will be out w/ no major changes & al La Honda 06's will drop another couple of hundred bucks for basically the same bike, brand new and you save about a grand. If you cant wait- $6299 otd cant be beat. Guys are asking 6k in the trader. Otherwise the 07 worth waiting for is the is the Kawi- 5 speed this year-might just get bike of the year-I 've ridden both 06's and they're very close. That ugly greenie might just sway me away from my Honda in 07.
I hear th YZF is good but not for a bigger guy, so no go for me-too cramped ergos. Love that retro yellow. Unless your high level ex/pro, you cant go wrong w/ any of the new bikes. Us mere mortals cant really tell them apart.
Good Luck.
BTW
Ill blow out my 04 crf450 for $3750 if you cant afford new.

The 03 yz 450 hits harder than the 04, 05, or 06, ask ANYONE who has honestly ridden them. I love the new frame on the yz's but I wish the 06's had the "2 stroke punch" in the throttle response like my 03, that's the same reason why I never rode honda, they pull, but there's not a huge hit in the power band

I believe he is referring to the 250 and 250F. Both of which have the the 249cc displacement. The 450F would be the equivelant to the 250...speed and power terms.

I rode a 2smoker my whole life, and takled shite to the friends that started riding 4's. I bought my 450 about a year ago, and will never look back. The tracks are much easier to ride on the 450 because the powerban is always there. Not as much shifting needed. We mostly ride glamis and the 4 is waaaayyy better out there. The two stroke wind out to easily through lower gears going up bigger dunes. I did Adelanto GP this past year and I liked it better because I can stay in a higher gear, clutch-it and still slide the backend on the pavement without having to downshift and then grab clutch to upshift right at the end of the turn. My .02 is in the jar!

LOL, glad to see you have a good sense of humor, that is what it was a joke. Actually my buddy can ride pretty good, and when we have these all out drag races we are running fire roads along side of I-10. I also like a good single track technical ride. Oh well I guess I have to take back the Glorified Sand Wash Racer, thats what we call the typical Tucson quad rider who talks about how fast his raptor is and he will meet you down in the wash to prove it, he usually shows up in shorts, a muscle shirt or tank top and a nice set of high top tennis shoes, most of his teeth are gone in the front or they have a nice yellow stain or tint to them. These guys can ride let me tell you, half the time half of their ass is hanging out as they grab gears going down the local wash( you guys could picture it as railing down the river bed) Get the picture..LOL :crossx: Oh yeah dont forget most of these guys have at least a double wide, with an attached carport.

OH....by the way....anyone looking for a SUPER clean 03 YZ 250 (2 stroke) check here (http://www.***boat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118240).

Honda CRF's are by far the worst dirtbike out there with valve issues, trans and chain tentioner problems. Believe me I had one. Been there done that. Yamaha is the only way to go. I have a 2004 modified Yamaha WR450F that I race desert with, 2000 miles of hard desert riding and not one single problem. Yamaha's have the lowest maintance of any dirtbike manufacture. Yamaha was also the first to come out with the awesome, powerful, fast 4-stroke the 98 YZ400F. My brother has one and with over 15,000 miles on the motor, still running strong to this day with no valve, trans issues. Not even a valve adjustment. That bike of his amazes me everytime we go out riding. :rollside:

I don't know about that... I lost third gear on my old YZF 426 and when I split the cases all of the bearings needed to be replaced as well. On the other hand my CRF 450 has been great. I think it all depends on how you maintain the bike, a lot of guys who switch from a 2 stroke to a 4 stroke don't realize that, and I think that is where most of the problems stem from

They dont, but you can purchase them seperately. Unless they are street legal equipped.

Actually the WR's come with a factory "trip Odometer" but I don't think it goes to 15,000 :D
I think that Yamaha's 5 valve patent definately hurts the other bike manufactures in the sense that the maintenance on the 4 valves bikes is a little more than the Yamaha, less lift on three exhaust valves vs. two means less adjustment needed but I've seen good and bad from both the Honda and Yamaha.
Again, if I were buying a bike today...it would be the new Yamaha YZ450F with the alum frame and 5 speed tranny. Hopefully the WR will follow with the Alum frame next year and that will make a great desert bike, especially with the e-start :crossx:

Maybe River Rat Mike will bring his modded Yammy Haw I bet we can take him, even if he has all that desert racing experience, we all know that doesnt compare to a Glorified Sand Wash Racer! :rollside:

Really it comes down to preference. I've riden both and they are great bikes. I have a CRF450 and I would lean towards Honda, but I also enjoy Yamaha's. Find someone that has them and take them for a ride.
