Jet for river/shallow water, prop for lakes/deep water.

Easier to change a prop on an I/O than in a jet.

Ya gotta have a certain mindset to be a jetboater,, they handle a bit different, different application than prop.
Think we're among the rare few jetboaters that run to Catalina.

All things aside I would have to say it depends alot on where you plan on boating...

It all depends on what you are looking to do. I have a jet, and I really like it. I really like the fact that there are no moving parts outside of the boat, and don't have to worry too much it getting the kids.
Props do have a better top end, so it all just depends on what you are looking to do. IMO, there is nothing nicer looking than a 100 ft roostertail off the back of a jet baot, and it's funny to see what you can do to jet skiers w/ it. Good luck...

I agree...if your going somewhere where it gets rough get a prop.

Havi on weekends is a rough lake. To get a decent ride, you really needs a larger boat with a deeper V or a tunnel hull. A single jet just won't perform very well with a larger than 21 foot boat. Even with a 21 foot daycruiser, the best you can reasonably expect is 55-58mph with about 400hp. And the 21 will still beat you to a pulp in Havi.
Get at least a true 24 foot boat (not including the swimstep) and a deep V of at least 22 degrees, or go for a tunnel hull.
I went from a 21 jet to a 25 foot deep V. My jet boat had about 400hp compared to 425hp in the deep V. Best I ever saw in the jet boat was 58mph versus 72 in the outdrive. And at 4,000 rpm the jet would do about 44mph with a light load versus 55mph in the outdrive. Despite the much heavier weight of the 25 foot boat, gas mileage is significantly better.

Up to 21’ jet is fine, anything bigger prop.

Jets are a helluva lot of cheap fun. You don't have to worry as much about water depth, roostertails are cool, they are light and simple to work on, and chicks love jets. Yes they do use more fuel, and can be a bit of a handfull in the rough stuff. They are not as fast as a comparable prop boat. My stock Hardin 454 runs 60, but I like to cruise at 40. I run my 20.6 Carrera at Havi no problem(with some common sense), and its perfect up or down river. I can ski, wakeboard, tow a tube, and with little kids diving off the swimstep I have a lot less worries.
