View Full Version : Hello all, Im new to the forum

Hello my name is Greg. I live in Brazil Indiana and take my boat out to Raccoon lake in Rockville, IN. I stumbled across this forum by Google. I was looking for some ways to hop up my 72 Glastron Carlson CV 21. It has a 455 Olds with a 650 Holley on a Holley street dominator intake, points ignition, and a Berkley jet drive. It wont rev any higher than 3000 RPM and tops out at about 45 Mph. (could that be regulated by the advance weights in the distributor?) I know that 455 can push the boat faster than that. The boat looks to be all original except for a few things on the engine. When I got it, it had a cracked intake and the valve covers leaked pretty bad so I swapped them out and rebuilt the carb. You may want to post this in the tech forums, you probabbly would have better luck. BTW your boat is BAD AZZ....and welcome.

First thing I'd do is ditch the points and go with an electronic ignition. There should be no reason that motor shouldn't hit at least 4000 rpms. Second, i'd look into a little bigger carb. Jet boats love fuel. So I'd go with a nice 750 Holley. But this is just my .02. Others will probably recomend some other things. Oh and welcome to the ***boat addiction. :rollside:

Yup thats what I was plannin on doing just wanted some other oppinions first. I thought the boat was starving its self for gas.

My mother did drink heavily while she was pregnant with me. She also did crack.

I know my parents put my swing-set to close to the wall when I was little. :)
I used to Hot Rod Olds engines years ago (70 Cutlass S with a 455) and I had a flat bottom v-drive with an 455 olds in it that was built up. These are semi quirky engines that dont like a whole bunch of RPM and stock they don't like a ton of timing either. With a timing light that has an advance knob you can check your total advance. Buy or rent one of these first. Shoot for 30 total degrees at around 3K rpm. If the timing checks out and the cylinders all have decent compression then...
Does that Holley Carb have vac secondaries? Maybe they are not opening?
There could be a hole in the diaphram. Some of us peeps are here today because of this very thing. :idea: :rolleyes: :rollside:

The carb has manual secondaries, and I just rebuilt it about a month and a half ago.
What is the suggested Max RPM for an internaly stock 455 Olds?

You should be able to spin it into the mid four's in mild marine form.
How long have you owned the boat? Also is your tach correct? I have seen this tail chase before with what ended up to be a bad tach.
Food for thought, olds engines are all the same for the most part. No small to big block differences in appearance.
Is there a possibility someone plopped a 350 or a low hp 425 in there?
There my just be not enough horse power to spin your current pump load.
Verify your timing first though. I don't want to get ahead of things.
A very cool vintage ride though.

while your there check the impeller to wear ring gap. ( feeler gauge) it shoiuld be in the .025-.035 range. If not, it may be time for a rebuild.

What altitude is the lake at?

Never paid any attention to the gps while I was at the lake, but I just walked out the front door and the house is at 691 ft. The lake is really close to that. Id say 675 to 725 feet above sea level.
