POWER BOAT MAG. REVIEW
[2000 Sport Catamaran Roundup]
IN FLAMES
The Advantage 28' Sport Cat, Powerboat magazine's 1999 Sport Cat of the Year, boiled the waters of the Colorado River with is 101.4-mph top end and dazzling graphics.
Story by staff
Any sport-catamaran roundup would be incomplete without the 28' Sport Cat - and not just because of the model's name. Since Advantage Boats of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., introduced the 28'1"-long, 8'6"-wide boat in 1998, it has been among the most exhilarating, well-built performers in the entire class. That's why it earned our 1999 Sport Catamaran of the Year award.
Base price for the boat with a MerCruiser 7.4L MPI engine is an astoundingly low $26,900. With a 740-hp Teague Custom Marine 509 engine under the power hatch and a host of options, the boat's as-tested price was $96,000.
Getting to test the 28' Sport Cat again was like spending time with a close friend, one we don't see nearly enough. With the TCM 509 motorcomplete with Merlin heads, Manley rods, JE pistons, a Holley/B&M 420 mega-blower, a Superchiller intercooler and CMI exhaust - providing the juice, top speed was 101.4 mph at 5700 rpm. The hopped-up big-block was dialed into a Bravo One drive with TCM Platinum Series upgrades and an IMCO drive shower, spinning a lab-finished Bravo One 15 1/4" x 29" four-blade stainless-steel propeller through a 1.36:1 gear set.
In standing-start acceleration tests, the 28' Sport Cat went swiftly to work, coming on plane in 4 seconds and reaching 75 mph in 20 seconds. Even more dazzling in mid-range tests, the cat flew from 30 to 50 mph in 4.5 seconds, from 40 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and from 40 to 70 mph in 9 seconds.
The 28' Sport Cat leaned slightly into corners, which made it exceptionally comfortable to turn. Fully hydraulic steering from IMCO proved responsive - a definite plus. At the highest speeds, the cat did feel somewhat loose and light, though not alarmingly so. Up to the traditionally exacting standards of Advantage, engine-compartment rigging elements included braided stainless-steel hoses and conduit-wrapped wire looms supported by cushion clamps. The engine was stoutly installed with Mercury racing mounts and L-angles thru-bolted to the stringers.
Gelcoat and mold work were downright pristine, and both were protected by an offshore-style plastic rubrail that was expertly installed. For hardware, the boat was outfitted with six Accon Pull-Up¨ cleats, a nav light on the nose, a ladder above the integrated swim platform and a ski tow on the transom. Two wind deflectors, one for the driver and one for the co-pilot, were mounted on a stainless-steel bar that ran along the molded fairing. More than cosmetic, the deflectors actually knocked down the onrushing wind during speed runs. Advantage supplied two lounges in the 28' Sport Cat's cabin, as well as a mirror. The cabin was decked out with gray marine-grade carpet, as was the sole of the boat's cockpit. Bucket seats in the cockpit for the driver and co-pilot were plush, as was the rear bench. Between those buckets was a ski locker with a hinged lid.
A complete assortment of Gaffrig gauges, including a 120-mph liquid-filled speedometer, adorned the helm, as did rocker switches for the accessories. To complete the Morse throttle-and-shifter package on the gunwale, the manufacturer added a bolt-on Rex Marine drive-trim switch to the throttle handle.
The 28' Sport Cat is one "old" friend we'd like to meet again, the sooner the better.
Btw my boat runs as hard as the one in the review... :)
