There are a bunch of VW air-cooled engine builders out there. I know of 3 or 4 in the Inland Empire alone.
The best advice I can give, is not to get one based on price alone. The parts to build a (decent) VW engine run around $1,500-$1,600 (more for larger displacement - 1776+) by themselves. A complete engine for around that price means that they used inferior parts, used parts, or cut corners in other ways.
Find a couple of builders, and then visit their shops. Are they clean, neat organized? Or are the dirty, greasy, with parts laying all over the place? The way they keep their shop is a good indication of how they build their engines. Ask for a list of people who've bought their engines, and check on their satisfaction. Demand nothing less than 12 month warranty.
Stay away from anything to do with GEX Engines. There are hundreds of horror stories about their engines and (lack of) customer service.

I have been going to them with my VW stuff for years, ask for Ed or Shane.
Ed knows his VW's. Might be, might not be the cheapest, but they know their shit regardless.
SB Products sent you down there.

Warranty on high performance air cooled engine, or any other "performance" parts?
Does it even exist?

Thanks for the tips, I will forward them. I have built plenty of VW engines, It's just been a long time since I touched one. I figured it would be cheaper to pay someone else then to go out & buy all the tools again to do it myself for one motor.
Sweet cars guys! Love them sleepers.

A guy by the name of Jimmy Hale up in Victorville....Gene Berg would have used Jimmy to build his motors if Gene were still alive today!!!
Gene Berg was the best!@!
Mow,
Wicky
P.S. Jimmy built a 1915 69BergX94/VZ35 Engle with very opened up heads. I think it was 42 intake 39 exhaust non rollered that turned 6.5 sec in the 1/8mi sand drags for me. Oh yeah, this was a full bodied Baja too!!
The motor stayed together forever.

Gene Berg's stuff was pretty nice back in the day. I had a guy named Stacy Sizzlelove build me a couple motors. I'd have to say that 2276 he built me years ago was an animal. I wish I new how to get ahold of him. I miss my bug. :(

Fresh 1776 (built by me) $1000 Or it goes into one of my sandrails this season.
Warranty is the same as I get (you break it you fix it)

If your buddy is in LV you could try Butch Dean over at Valley Performance. He's a good guy and has been active in desert racing and v-dub performance for a very long time. I'm assuming he's still there, been quite some time since I've been to his shop. He did our motors and cars when my family was desert racing.

As pictured with a little more dust.

Yes it is and yes I can.....the test/run stand is purpose built to build and test/run VW motors.
