We're getting the offroad toys dialed in and duning thoughts are passing through my pea brain.
The wife pulled into Little Dumont Dunes towing at about 1 AM,, then thought she had the wrong place, did a "U" turn into the quicksand and got stuck.
Stuck to the chassis deluxe. Looked brutal,, but not really,, but she thought it was.
So she looks around, realizes she's in the right place,, see's our brite green strobe flashing at our campsite in the awsum Death Valley nite,, and comes to get me to get her unstuck.
No problem,, the 4x4 GMC and a tow strap and we'll be just fine in just seconds.
I get out at her stuck truck and toyhauler, get ready to hook it all up, and the wife insists I listen to how it happened before we move everything.
I never loose my cool, or get sore with her,, no reason to explain I think., I was consoling her that: " it's ok,,it happens"., But she felt bad anyway.
Really it was no BFD.
So I say: "Tell me back at camp"
No she says,, I want you to listen to me first".
"Ahh, baby,, tell me in a few minutes." I plea.
OK,, Imagine that everyone is now arriving at the dunes,, and all kinds of 10 million candlepower lites are shining on me,, and I looked like the biggest sorry weinie standing there listening to the story, truck stuck deluxe.
So I listen, listen and listen some more. The story went on forever,, me smileing and being awsum,,,
Lots and lots Rigs are slowly passing by,, everyone staring at me in the glow of aircraft landing lites, thinking what a dips#it. This guy knows better.
Finally hooked on the sling and yanked her out gently in a matter of seconds.
I got over it.
Is this what ya call being a good listener to the wife???
Any stuck stories?

That is what you call a good listener to your wife, yes.
You are my hero, I would have hooked up to it and been done.

we were in mexico on a surf trip and were near errindera driving out to this wave we thought we saw. well the trail started getting more sandy and more sandy but as long as we kept our speed we were good until the trail opens to the beach where there is about a 60 degree downslope and goes back up to the trail. well the 6" lifted 2wd superduty didnt liek the downslope and we just fished tail out as we tried to make it back up the bank to the trail. so we end up burrying it to the axle and we were on a pretty bad angle so we thought we were ****ed since there were four of us and town was about 2 miles away and no one else in sight. luckily we had dirt bikes with us as well and as someone went to town to try and find someone we got the ramps and and tried lettin her move up. did a lot of digging and got her up about 3 feet. then we noticed the tide started to come in.....that when the oh shit factor hit. well if you have seen some of the desert peopel movies there is always a guy in this little 80s toyota and he came cruisin by but wouldnt budge it with his old straight axle toyota. so i hopped in with him talkin spanglish as we went to town to get a tractor. not a minute later he pulls out a bottle of el presidente tequila and hands it to me. we shared some drinks got the tractor, yanked us right out and gave em 50 bucks each, and headed down to san quintin.
sorry for the long post but it was a long story!! :rollside:

Kinda the same scenario for me except I was driving into GarbageFlats in Glamis. Somewhere around midnite. Lazy me did not airdown. Sand felt very soft and fluffy driving down sand highway. F350 4by, Cabover and flatbed loaded to max.
Get to our general camping spot and start hunting for the perfect location by flashlite. Make a turn and bang it drops into the powdery-ist sand I've felt there. All 4 to the axle w/trailer still attached. DAMN!!
Guess we'll camp right here honey and dig out in the morning.
I took most the day to dig us out still being a stubborn Kraut refusing to airdown. I'd pissed, moaned and sweat then go off and ride for 30 minutes and come back to the task. I did win the battle with the dune gods later in the day with a shreik of joy and puffed out chest... :p
It was a strange feeling weekend. Both the wife and I had weird vibes in certain areas of the dunes while riding, mostly along in the areas of the washes. Driving home we had a odd feeling too, like something was amiss, we had no clue.
Once home again we got cold chills after seeing the news, now we knew what seemed off while out there. It was the weekend that David Westerfield had kidnapped the young girl from San Diego neighborhood, taken her God knows where to rape and kill her, including a stop in Glamis with his motorhome, getting stuck in a wash(where we felt wierd) and driving his rig along the same route we'd driven home ourselves.

Guys from work manage to get REALLY well stuck a few times a year. Our work trucks are all loaded down F-350 4by's. Some of the rookies always assume 4WD means you have a big S on your chest. Those are usually the very worst stucks. Usually 30+ miles off the pavement, somewhere where they shouldn't be, and buried to the frame with about a 10K# work truck... Bonus is a 45KW diesel generator in tow. We've had some stuck for days, have to get tractors or the like.
We make them stay and help until it's out. No going home, no tow truck. They only usually get stuck just that once... :) Have some real good snow and mud stuck stories, too...

I got stuck in an area outside of Ocotillo Wells in my 2 WD Ford Ranger while looking for some new areas to mountain bike. We went way off the road and went to turn around, and backed up onto a bush that was on a mound of sand - just enough speed to put the dif right in the middle and both wheels dig minor holes, but spun because the diff was on the mound. We could not dig it out the diff - we were stuck just wrong. We let the tires down to 8 lbs and couldn't move. We went up to the road and knocked down a couple street signs and tried to use them as leverage on the wheels - and nothing. I end up hitching a ride into some little town and find the person willing to help me is an 80 year old man with an old willy's 4x4. But, he wants $200 and I only had $5 on me, and my buddy had nothing. Plus, this was a time when I barely had two nickles to rub together. So, the old guy tells me to send him a check. Well, it takes all of about 30 seconds to pull my truck off of the mound.
I write him a check...and it bounces. The guy is nice as hell and writes me a letter and offers to put me on a payment plan. I sent him cash plus some extra money for the fees incurred with my check bouncing. He was a cool guy and I kept in touch with him for a while and would stop by and see him every time I was out that way. He died a few years later and left me the $250 I sent him in his will. I still stop by Bernie's grave and pay my respects.

Thats a great story HolyMoly... Thumbs up.

Lue, I usually don't buy into weird feelings and blow it off...but once we saw the news story I had to believe something was telling us hints. We did call local PD and they referred us to the SD PD, they did take the time to listen to us and actually look in the area where we drove home. We'd seen a vehicle where you'd not normally see one, this was especially intriguing to the detectives.

You can never really explain those things but there's gotta be something beyond our relm of explanantions.

I am glad TPC had posted this thread as I had forgotten about Bernie for a few years. I posted my usual smart ass post, and then a few minutes later I remembered ol' Bernie. Time to get out there again.
I also forgot to mention that when I hitched a ride, I had to ride in the back of a truck towing a 5th wheel trailer, which wasn't so bad, except he had a reserve fuel tank in the bed and put me fairly uncomfortably close to the trailer.

We do Pismo 2x every summer. We have a 30' class C motor home and go through the "drive it a far as I can then escort....dig....pull...dig until we get to where we want to be" deal. The end result is having to air down a bit to make this happen. Airing down Ford duals on this motorhome is a HUGE PITA which is why I try and avoid it. The access to the valve stems is crap.
This summer was the first trip with our new Alcoa wheels and the valve stems are in a great spot for access. Air down right at the get go and drove all over that beach like I was in 6 wheel drive with the jeep aired down and still on the tow bar. The difference just amazed me.
So I side with not wanting to air down but now just do it and save the drama.
When we leave it takes about an hour to air everything back up though.
