I've seen him perform a few times over the years. Always a good show.

Yes he can, and if any of you are pilots and want to read about the real deal,
read the story about the airliner about 20 years ago that almost landed without any hydraulics at all. All he had was throttles and if you watch the
video, he almost made it. as it was he saved half the people on the plane.
What an amazing group of men that pulled that off. I'm sorry I can't remember the details. I read it once and will never forget it. It seems like
it was coming in to Iowa or somewhere in the midwest. It'll set you straight up in the chair.

They were headed to Chicago... and ended up in Souix City...
Or more recently, what about the Airborne Express Airbus that had it's hydraulics shot out coming out of Bagdad... the crew was able to return and land without pranging the airplane.
Bob Hoover had his share of close calls... I suggest reading "Forever Flying", his autobiography. :D

I have seen him do that in person a no. of times. Also the sabre liner jet he does aerobatics in is off the hook. Him and chuck yeager were mustang pilots in the war ONE of the BEST stick and rudder men ever!!!!!!

He may fly well but he can't taxi a P51 for SH!T. I think it was the 87 0r the 88 Reno Air Races. he pulled up in front of the pits and put the prop of the yellow Evergreen avation P51 into the hood of a parked FORD pickup! He asked around to borrow a P51 so he could start the unlimited Gold races with nobody stepping up, he instead had to fly backseat in a T33 called the Red Knight to call the start of the races. Friggin classic.......

Hoover was always a hit at an airshow. My Dad was an air traffic controller in the Air Force for 20 + years. He did some airshow coordination and had the opportunity to fly with Hoover at an airshow in Alabama. I was there working a static display of an AC-130 Spectre gunship (say firepower) at the same airshow. It was really a thrill to see that plane a few feet off the ground with your Dad in there. He should have taken me along! Man tat was a long time ago!

Robert ain't bulletproof. I remember reading about that deal at Reno.
He went thru that debacle about his medical being pulled a few years back when the FAA clipped his wings. Created a real firestorm of controversy.
As a kid I was blown away by his Tennessee Waltz in the -51 that he flew for Rockwell. I've got some old 8mm stuff we took at Rockford and early Oshkosh days of him in both the -51 and the Shrike Commander.
Whatta guy.

Another great/famous pilot was Tex Johnson, the Boeing test pilot who first flew the B-47 bomber, B-52 bomber and the 707 airliner.
On Aug 7, 1955, at Lake Washington during the unlimited hydroplane races, he flew the new 707 over the lake and all the crowds and unexpectidly did a full barrel roll in the airliner. Just in case anyone missed it, he turned around and did it again.
It gained nationwide attention for the new airliner. I don't think it was ever done again in a comercial airliner.
