For all of you who know me, or have read my posts, I am not one to pipe up unless there is an issue. I donÂ’t over exaggerate and value my integrity greatly. I am all about good fellowship and have sold parts ($500 oil pan) here to other members just for the price of shipping. And I am writing this post with the same fellowship motives for all of you.
I will try and make this as brief as I can in an attempt to inform all of you about my dealings with Holliday RV and Marine. I seized a bearing and compromised and axle a couple weekends ago and needed to get it repaired near Needles. Lost an entire wheel and hub and was basically limping around Laughlin with a three wheeled trailer on a Sunday. Anyway, a buddy recommended this place and I called them the following Monday. Talked to a service guy named Tim and brought it down. I didnÂ’t trust the rest of my bearings, so I got an estimate for two new axle assemblies and a new wheel and tire. I also wanted to put on the Bearing Buddies to be safe. Tim gave me the estimate at about $1000.00 and said it would take about a week and a half. Tim explained to me that they would take off one axle, measure it, and a place in Phoenix would put two of them together. This would allow them to wheel my boat around the yard in the interim. Tim even told me he would move his boat out from underneath an awning and put mine there instead. I felt pretty good about all of this at the time. Tim was going on vacation, so he said call Larry his partner in a couple of days.
Talked to Larry a few days later and he tells me the axles are on with the three original wheels and that he needed to find another similar wheel for the fourth and says everything will for sure be done by Saturday. OK I say and told him to call me back with the totaled bill. Larry calls back and says there’s a problem. Should have seen this coming!!! He says we can’t legally put a car tire on your trailer to match the other tires (all car tires). Mind you this is an Old School rig. Anyway, he says he can’t find a “trailer” tire the same size as the other three. Everyone see where this is going???? Alright, how much for four tires I say. He’s got to get back to me. I get a call back that they are having problems finding tires. The owner, Stan, gets on the phone and says he has to find four tires from all over the place and they may not even be of the same brand. Now Stan on this day sounded on the phone like he just finished a bottle of Jack. Starting to get pissed as I’m talking to him, because my confidence from before is now gone. Stan dismisses me and my concerns and says he has other customers to deal with. I ask to talk to Larry again and Stan tells me he is busy. “Right!” I call a few minutes later and talk to Larry again. I told him to find a trailer tire close to the size of the other ones and if he can’t do that, find a same size rim and I will come down and find a tire and mount it myself off their property. He says OK and hangs up. To my utter surprise (NOT), Larry finds four matching wheels and tires for $500. I confirm that they are all the same and he assures me they are. Still no total on the bill yet, but the Saturday deadline is still good, according to Larry.
I call Larry on Thursday for the bill total and he tells me that they found a rim and used my existing three rims with all new tires. We go round and round on this for a while, so I wonÂ’t bore you more with it. Larry tells me the itemized bill is $1700 and change. Yes, I know, should have seen it coming. I asked Larry to get the tongue height of the trailer in case I needed to change my hitch and never got a call back.
I get to Holiday RV and Marine on Saturday morning and my rig looks like a four-wheel drive vehicle. There is over 8 inches of space between my tire and the fender. The axles are mounted under the leaf springs. There are no bearing buddies installed and the name of my boat is coming into play now. They should have seen that coming. I get Larry outside to discuss what was going on and he tells me when they mounted the axles properly, my original tires rubbed on the fenders. In the real world, this should have been communicated to me during our initial conversation, not after driving three hours through the desert. :hammerhea During this conversation, Larry ironically stated that as of late he was dealing with several unsatisfied customers.
He took me inside to talk to Stan and Stan proceeded to tell me that they did the best they could do under the time restraints that I gave them. He refused to discuss the absence of the Bearing Buddies. When I told him that the axles were put on wrong, he said, and I quote, “I know I put it together wrong.” Finally, some truth admitted. As I expressed my shock on how this business existed, in my boastful displeasure forced a new customer away from the counter to his demise, he insisted we take this outside. I again questioned his business ethic and admission of improperly assembling my trailer. He responded, “I should not have said that, let me rephrase.” We bantered back and forth about the time issue. The Saturday deadline was given to me by Larry and had never been changed from the beginning. Stan’s issues were that he needed more time to do it right, but this was all reference the acquisition of the tires during the previous phone calls. Stan’s now saying that his time issues were because of the axles, which is utter B.S. Stan then asked me what I wanted him to do because nothing was going to change and turned towards my trailer, cupped his hands together in prayer, bowed at my trailer several times and told me, “See no change.” Trust me fellow boaters, it was all I could do not to go to jail in Arizona. Stan proceeded to tell me if I wanted it to be done right; it would take 10 weeks and an additional $3500. I proceeded to stay outside to save Stan’s life as he walked away from me to serve other customers because he didn’t have time for me anymore.
Of course, Stan was getting no more of my money, so I thought. I proceeded to pay the $1700 at the cashier with my credit card when Stan called the cashier and told her to only accept cash. (Existing policy I find out later) So, I had to drive several miles to a bank to get the money and to tell the teller never to go to Holiday RV and Marine and returned to the scene of the crime. Yes people, there was a rape.
As I lifted the trailer tongue over my head to attach it to my truck, yes folks, I found I needed a new hitch and ball. $50 dollars later, I realized I needed a wrench to attach the ball to the hitch and I need to talk to my good buddy Stan. To StanÂ’s credit, he waived the $40 dollar deposit for the crescent wrench and acted like there was no issue at all. I didnÂ’t even get a reach-around.
The bottom line is, I should have been notified as soon as the axle problem was known. Then I could have made the choice to continue with the work done right or just paid for the services rendered and flatbedded my ride home. All of you need to make informed decisions in regards to your recreational vehicles. I have talked to several friends whoÂ’ve had their boats serviced by Stan and have had no complaints. However, I measure a company or business by how they rectify their errors, their salvation of character and integrity, and their common decency. StanÂ’s utter contempt and admission of flawed service, probably relying on his monopolized status in marine related repair in the Bullhead City area, allows him to chose to roll the dice whether someone will take him to court or not. He and his company are not a member of the Better Business Bureau. In fact, he has had a number of complaints with attention made to not the number of complaints, but the type of complaints and how the company handled them.
http://www.data.bbb.org/scripts/cgiip.exe/WService=phoenix/phoenix/showrpt.html?language=english&zid=21002989
Any business that has a policy to only accept cash for service is suspect in my book. Likely has had issues before and people stopped their credit payments etc... Stan is a member of the Bullhead City Chamber of Commerce and you can bet my bottom dollar, or $1700 of them, that they will be getting contacted by me after my anal bleeding ceases.
It is my belief that all things will balance in the end and if in fact my relaying these facts cost Stan at least $1700 in deferred customers, my conscience will be clear knowing, I helped you folks stay away from the craps table.
When you review the photos below, please possess several tissues as you will undoubtedly cry several tears for me.

I did have issue there before. But Larry came through for me.
I had just bought my bought drove it all the way out to Lake Mofo. Got there late one firday night and was staying at Harrahs. Kicking back that night drinking some brews with my cousin and I lift up the engine hatch and fins red oil on the bottom of the enigine floor. Turns out it was my outdrive fluid bucket. took it to Holiday the next day and Larry looked at it whipped out his glue gun, glued the bottom of the buckt and I was in buisness.

They may be decent at the boat thing, but a picture of the trailer thing speaks a thousand words.
P.S. Larry was obviously silent when in the presence of Stan during this whole thing. trying to keep his job I presume.

That guy has to be a total jerk releasing that as his finished product, & charging top dollar too. You may need to back much further down the launch ramp for the boat to float free. I hope you find resolution by any means.

The boat is dry docked until i get it fixed. There is no way i can launch unless I tow with a submarine.

So it was basicly $1700 for two axles "installed" ? HOLY SHEET MAN!
That's some labor rate!
This by no means is meant to make you feel worse!!!
I just thought you could use it as a reference to show people just how bad this assclown's business ethics are!

I commend you for keeping your cool. I don't know if I could have.
At this point, I wouldn't let those people touch anything I own, under any circumstances, based upon what you have shared with us here.
Letting something like this go out the door is unprofessional, unethical, and not within the realm of reality, IMHO. Their concern over the tire issue is laughable when this is their finished product. It wouldn't take much critical thinking to see a catastrophe in the making when you try to launch the boat.
Someone could be easily injured if the tow vehicle became uncontrollable due to water levels around it. I doubt seriously the manufacturer of the trailer would certify it's use in such an absurd configuration.
yet they make a big issue out of the tires?
If the man you spoke to is really the owner, then the business is in trouble.

Any trailer and tire related problems ............ Big O can handle it in BHC. These fine gentlemen at Holiday should read this thread. I bet if they get enough telephobe calls, they should fix your trailer REAL quick. Sirry Bud, but this is an unacceptable level of service.

You can only count on Karma....and the internet......to get back at those scammers.
I dealt with a drain cleaner yesterday who wanted $2600 to install a cleanout at a rental property... I did it this morning in five hours with one helper and put in 4 cleanouts in 3 different locations....parts cost $56.00 F-ing scammers.
You can complain to local BBB, and to the auto repair board, but otherwise you are screwed. I would post your story on all the RV boards as well.

Heres a link to one rv forum http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php Last year I blew out a tire on my boat trailer and had a difficult time finding a tire store in BHC area that had them. Why is it that an area that is loaded with all types of trailers doesnt keep a huge stock of those type of tires. I will definately keep that shop in mind not to use them and also let my friends know also. They need to be shut down. Have you consulted with an attorney as far as anything you can do? good luck

Holiday RV and Marine wont accept credit cards because they do shoddy work.If they accepted your cc and you called the card company expressing your displeasure with them Holiday would have not been paid. I bet this has happened to Holiday before that's why they only accept cash.
They had your old axles. How come they didn't install similar axles? They should have called you and informed you of the problems. Instead they act like they did you a huge favor by having the trailer ready when you requested.
You should have towed your boat away and not paid them. It's your boat and trailer they can not hold it for payment. They could put a lien on it for non payment. What would they have done (call the cops). IF you explained your displeasure with the police they would have sided with you after one look at that trailer.
Once you paid them and you accepted their fine craftsmanship and inflated prices it doesnt leave you much recourse other than to sue them to recoup your money. Which will most likely cost you more than you have spent so far.
Where as if you did not pay them they would of had to sue you to try and get paid for their shoddy work.
You could lift the truck to match the trailer. Maybe they will give you a discount for being a repeat customer. :rollside:

Wonder if there are fair business practice laws which would cover this, I would look into finding a local, state and/or federal watchdog agencies and report their as....es, some you can file a complaint online. These guys need to be put out of business and working for a non english speaking gardener. (I'd say my gardener, but they way they stole your money, I would not want them around my house).

If you check there has been another post on here for Holiday RV, not a good one either. I went to Holiday to buy a fuel/oil pump for my Evinrude and the guy at the parts counter would not sell it to me, because they would not have the part to put on a customers boat paying for the repair. I then wanted them to put it on the boat so that I could get my week long trip going again, and the idiot tells me it will be two weeks (I guess he missed the part about vacation). Got a phone book from the casino called around Havasu was back on the water the next morning by 11am. I will never bring anything into that place, I would have it towed to Havasu first. They are garbage.

If your parts guy was an old gray haired fellow, then it was probably Stan. He never admitted he was, but Larry gave it up. Confirmed Stan is the owner according to the BBB link. Been in business since 1975, miracles do happen.

Is there a TV station in that area that has one of those, "Call Channel X for Action", reporters?
This is a made-for TV story. Pictures tell a thousand words. The only pic you need that you don't have is an attempt to launch behind a 2wd truck.
Is there a California type BAR in Arizona, through which this outfit is licensed?
They need to be notified of this boondoggle, if there is.
I'm sure you will, but when this is repaired properly, the tech who does the work needs to be aware up front that you have an issue pending with Holiday, and you plan on documenting every dime you spend getting the trailer restored to a usable conditon.

Not seeing the axels, but it looks as if they flipped them the wrong way. Not to hard to fix yourself, but you payed good money for the repair that was incorrect.
I bought a starter from there a few years ago when on a vacation. The starter Would not even turn the boat over. I took it back and told him it was no good and he said there was no refunds on electrical parts.I said Dude, I never left your parking lot and when it was installed it would'nt turn the engine over and he proceded to tell me I have other issues.Well to make it short, he needed to buy a new display case at his counter because the started fell threw it on my way out. I know that cost him more then the 85 bucks I threw away there.

That's awesome. I knew this guy's business ethics were like this. The axles were of a bigger diameter than the originals. That's why they wouldn't fit the right way rubbing the tires on the fender. This is the whole point. Call me and tell me there is a delay for the right parts so I can make a decision to leave it or pay a little for labor/effort and pick up my friggin boat.

I had a routine 50 hr maintenance done there and things went pretty smooth. Although, there their prices were on the higher end. In other dealings with them for parts, etc, you definately get the feeling like they are doing you a big favor selling you stuff. Anyway, what the hell ever happened to customer service? Holiday RV & Marine fullfilling your boating off road needs. with some bigger tires Im sure you would be able to get it higher. Personally I dont know what my first words would have been if they "FIXED" my trailer real good like that. Did they think you wouldnt notice? Im all for getting it done in a pinch but this takes the cake. What the hell is up with the 10 weeks deal. for the kind of money they charged you they could of sent Billy Bob to havasu or Vegas in the flatbed to at least get the right axels.

:jawdrop: I think I would have lost my head, and then told them I'm going to lunch and have it fix right befor I get back, or else, I had a valve break on a trailer tire when I was out in havi, and I pulled into a big tire place in lake havasu, I can't remember the name, but it was a red bulding with alotand of glass, I'm sure someone can't put the name in here for me, But anyways I had took the wheel off and put my spare on, I took the bad tire into the place, and the guy behind the counter said about a hour, I said man I have to be in L.A. this afternoon, the mang. came over and said he will fix it, 10 min later he rolls out my tire and said to me, have a safe trip, I said what do I owe you, He said don't worry about it, :rollside: They were very nice to me, and I will be back. :rollside:

Thanks Billy, I should have flat bedded it back here to Dan, but who knew. I did have the erge to take off road coming outa Barstow with the rest of the off-roaders. The friggin thing looks like I was fliyng a kite behind my rig on the way home. Hey maybe we can paint the bottom of the boat, plenty of room to work now! :hammerhea

That sucks, I'll steer clear.
Ran into similar problems:
1. No car tires on trailer, this is common even if the other three are car tires. You can thank the lawyers for this one
2. "don't have that size tire" you probally had 175/14s on there. In trailer tires, they make a 205/14 which rubs the fenders
To correct this we re hung the fenders so they look correct and don't hit anymore. you can also try wheels with a little more offset. Then flip the axles back and you'll have a normal ride height.
Sometimes a phone call can save a huge headache, if they would have called and given you the whole story BEFORE you got there you could have had your ducks in a row and had another plan.

I have purchased from them but never had service done. I did have a friend take their boat to them on a sat morn (holiday weekend) becasue he was having problems with his trim. They had it fixed it ibout 3 hrs and he was back on the water. (it was a little expensive, about 100.00 more than it should have been)

sorry to hear about this, it really sux. but if the guy has been there for 30 years (in bullhead city of all places), his overhead is most likely zero. and treating people like this has probably gotten his ass kicked several times.
did you take your old axles with you, or did they keep 'em? they could probably be fixed and reinstalled. the $90 straight axles are nice, but dropped axles that are the correct drop and track will be anywhere from 150-250 without a hub?
i've been hosed over by local marina stores before, but never to the extent you got it. as much as it po'd me, always kind of looked at it as a lesson learned. whatever else you do, learn as much as you can about the care and feeding of trailer wheel bearings. i have a small box carrying extra inside/outside bearings and races, tools to remove and install everything, inner seals, bearing packer, bearing buddys and bra (cover), grease gun, and several extra tubes of marine wheel bearing grease. the trailer used to have hub covers like your moons, but i took 'em off so i could monitor bearing temp and get to the buddies easier.
i also carry a strap bag to strap up the 4th wheel, if something happens, and get it somewhere i can work on it. i towed 150miles with a strapped up 4th wheel before. i don't recommend it, and ya need to go slow, but it's better than getting ripped off.

I left a message for Stan and explained how disappointed I was hearing about this situation. I added that I would be monitoring the situation via HB and insisted he resolve this issue. I also told him I would make sure that all my contacts in the boating community would be appropriately warned about his shop.

I always carry a chain, small jack, bearings, grease, and all tools to change, etc. Have run all the way to the river and back on 3 before. Just have to slow down a bit. If you fry a hub you're usually SOL on doing a bearing change on the road, hence strap or chain. For the average guy who doesn't want to or know how to do bearings, the jack and chain or strap routine is pretty easy and the way to go till you can get to a shop that can repair.
Single axle, sorry SOL.

Where I live, there aren't a lot of places to get these types of repairs done. We pretty much have to be self sufficient. It's a nice way to live, rather than scratching out cheques for everything.
Trailer work isn't particularly difficult. I replaced bearings/races on both sides of my trailer in about 90 minutes. I think the 1" bearings I needed cost about $15 for both sides. I probably spent half that again on grease.
It's nice to tow for an hour and barely able to feel any heat coming from the hubs at all. Of course, it probably doesn't hurt that my boat weighs about 1100 lbs. :D

That is why these nimrods probably work out in the middle of nowhere, to cover their incompetance at the expense of people in a pinch like yourself.
Any reputable place wouldn't bend you over and at least they could read a tape measure to order the correct axles, i'm sure big o or discount could have gotten them the tires you needed.
Places like that need to disappear !! What a bunch of idiots !!
Even Walmart won't sell you car tires for a trailer. We can thank the lawyers for that. I had 4 wheels and tires to get the tires replaced, and the second I said TRAILER the right sizes were no longer available, not to mention the price almost trippling. Next time I tell 'em the tires are for a Nova or something small like that........That raised trailer looks like the shackles are also mounted down instead of up, which may correct as you drive and the suspension works abit..............MP

I ask one of the young employees what the hell was going on inside the store. She replied that the owners house burned down and they have no place to live but a trailer. They were very upset and dispondent about their loss. I couldn't take it anymore and walked out, never to return to that environment. Maybe they are trying to recoup their losses and build another home. Not at my expense.

My farther in law got screwed by them also last month,
He bought a 18 Nitro fishing boat and upgraded to the Verado, Once the boat arrived they said they diddnt have a tech to work on Verados so they sent it to Vegas. The first trip out the boat pourposed and never went over 4k. After a quick look i noticed the X dimention was way to high and the prop was 5 sixes to big. Then they charged him extra for power steering when the Verado comes with it standard. There is more to the story but it is third party info.

All you need is one of those little floor jacks they sell at like Costco, they lift about 2 tons I think, and enough chain to go around the trailer frame and axle, a couple bolts washers and nuts to fit, a towel to cover the frame with if you're concerned about paint on the trailer. Any little jack will work but I prefer the safety of the small floor jack vs the bottle jack or similar cheapo especially since you may end up doing it in the dirt on non level ground somewhere.
Done it several times, very easy. One time in Cajon Pass going out. Went the whole weekend on 3 wheels and back home. I hate getting raped by shops for this kind of stuff away from home. I also carry a spare trailer tire normally, but that don't help much if you fry a hub.

On a related note, you can even get away with no jack as long as the tire/rim is still on the trailer. Find a curb and back or pull the trailer onto it in a way that the one bad wheel is the only thing on the curb, that compresses the suspension and forces the wheel deep into the fender. Put it in park, set the break and put the chain or straps on. Carefully pull off the curb, rock, hi-spot (whatever you are using) and the tire should be in the air. Now take the tire off and you should have the clearance to get where you need to go. Don't forget to loosen the lug nuts while the tire is still on the ground, makes it a little easier to get them off. Its not pretty but I've made it work.
I've also got a system for changing a tire that works w/o a jack. Take a couple of 2X4's and pull the good tire up onto enough 2X4's to elevate the blown tire. Change tire, pull off the blocks and continue your journey. No wrestling with jacks on the side of the road. Again, loosen the lug nuts before you elevate the blown tire. I guess the 2X4's could also work for compressing the suspension, just put them under the bad wheel instead of the good wheel, chain it up, pull off the blocks and pull the tire. Anyway, I prefer the 2X4's now, they are lighter than a jack and I think safer on the side of the road with traffic speeding by. I carry 3 approx 4' 2X4's on every boat trip now. You could even use 2X6's to make it more stable and bevel the ends so the tires go up easier. If you have a single axle trailer, call triple A-Aluminum Squirt

Everyone should send an e-mail letting Holiday know they will never do business with them, and will pass the info. to all their friends. This arrogance is from having no competition and some good old-fashioned customer service.

Sometimes wonder if they really do anything. I filed a complaint with the BBB a few years back and received the same response.

The only problem is the boat is in Bullhead and I don't go often so driving to Havasu and losing a whole day is out of the question. I will only go to him as a last resort. I hope Jake's can come through for me.
I just need some exhaust tips changed out. Any other recommendations if Jake's doesn't work out?

Last year, the pastor of our local church here in Havasu was out teaching "fishing" on Mohave. His boat stopped running and took it the Holliday. After two weeks and over $500.00 he picked it up and took it to the Lake Havasu Marina Shop. The boat WAS NOT RUNNING, but he paid over $500.00 to Holliday, for ??? The guys at Havasu marina tested everything and replaced the coil then charged him (aprox) $113.00 parts and labor. The boat is still running. I wonder about the service at Holliday?

Well, Stan seemed to be on a roll this weekend too. I got sent over there because I needed a jet boat starter (reverse rotation) and the AutoZone didn't have it.
They told me Bullhead Starter and Alternator may have it, but he didn't think they were open on Saturday, so I should go to Holiday (wonder if they're getting a kickback from this jackhole, because I didn't even have to tell him what it was off of and he said, "If that's for a jet boat, we don't have it".
I get to Holiday and the younger kid Tim tells me they don't have it, but he can have it for me in a couple hours. Well, being that we got a pretty late start because of me playing the Jagermaster from 1AM until 8AM on the black jack tables, I didn't have time to wait.
I asked if they were just going to get it from Bullhead Starter and he said probably, but he wasn't sure if they were open.
Well, here I am now, thinking...how's he gonna get it for me in a couple of hours, but now he's not sure if they're open???
Anyway, Stan walks up and sees the starter, and says...Oh, we have that one. Hold on.
Walks to the back, pulls it out, drops it on the counter..."$190".
When I picked my jaw/sphincter up, I said, jeezus, this can't be more than a hundred dollar starter during the middle of the week.
So I get, "Well, it's here if you want it!"
Not even a reacharound.
Needless to say, I think I'll search around a bit the next time and give old Stan a hefty F o kkkkkkkk you!
Only time I've ever needed boat parts in Laughlin in 15 years and I get reamed with no vaseline.

Hey Brian. You taking the boat to Glamis for Thanksgiving???? :rollside:. Sorry bud I couldn't resist. I have heard some not so good things about them in the past. If you need to fix the trailer call me and i'll set it up with Dan at Kustom Trailer.
Did he get King shocks with that tune up. I have been in the same boat and it sucks.. Suck up the $$ and give it time... He will get what he deserves!!!

You have to remember you did this back in the day i asume... I have some stories of chained up trailers on rice back in the day... 3 axel trailer with a cole hydro etc... Was good stuff. times are not the same

Nothing I hate more than someone who thinks they are doing you a favor when you are paying for goods/services. I am gonna have to pass - If I went there and he pulled this stuff with me I might spend the night in the slammer, and I don't need that. I will go to Jake's or just wait. I will spread the word also. Our group has 5 houses in Bullhead and all 5 are boaters. I will let all of them know.

Good choice. I would drive to Havasu if i had to or just wait till the next trip. He is getting no more of my money. There has been about 6000+ views of my two threads on this issue. I gotta believe this has cost him way more than my $1700.
Too bad, all he had to do was be honest have some integrity and I would have posted accolaids about him and his shop here on HB.

Jake's Marine took good care of me. Changed my tips out on the Friday of Memorial Weekend and had it done quick for a fair price. They are just past the exit to Katherines Landing on AZ 95. They chuckled when I mentioned Holiday RV and Marine.

Only time I've ever needed boat parts in Laughlin in 15 years and I get reamed with no vaseline.
OKAYYYYYYY!! Not to have to quote myself, but here we go again with Stan!
I buy this starter back on May 19th. We get to Laughlin on Tuesday July 3rd and my buddy's calling me from Telephone cove saying the forkin' starter is winding but not cranking!
I call my buddy Stan and he tells me it's my oil. Because of the heat, it's like cranking an engine with lard in it....hmmmm. Sounds like he believed it. Tell him it's a CA boat and there's just plain old 30W in the 460. Then he says it may be the battery not shooting the bendix out...hmmmm, could be, but it's a brand new battery and has never failed in the last 6 times on the water.
Tell him it's the starter...period.
Stan tells me to bring it in. So we pull it out of the water and trek it over to see the moron. I tell him to come outside and take a listen. He finally comes out and agrees that it's probably the starter and for us to take it out and bring it inside. Well, all the tools were in my truck, and we were tugging the boat with my buddy's Tahoe. No tools, so I ask Stan if I can borrow a couple box wrenches or a crescent. "Nope, those tools are all of the mechanic's personal tools and all of them are independent contractors (Really???) and so I can't, but I can buy some of his cheap chinese tools off the bargain rack.
Whatever...
So we buy them and pop the starter off. I see a very light sheen of surface rust when I hand it to him... "Nope, you've got water on here and that voids the warranty. I've got another one here, but it's $190".
I proceed to just about break his fu**ing neck with my imaginary hands. I show him that I can wipe the rust off with my finger, so he can kiss my ass because it's the starter and not the rust.
The next thing that comes out of his mouth, in front of myself, my buddy, and a few other people standing behind me just about knocked me off my feet...
"This is why we're here... you need parts, we've got them. That's why we're in business. If you people would stop buying jet boats, Mercurys and Mercruisers, I wouldn't be in business. Boats break and that's why we're here...to help you".
So, in kind, I reply..."You know Stan, I had read about you on ***boat in the forums, but didn't realize this was the place until after you ****ed me for my starter 6 weeks ago. First off, I've put my Mercruiser under water a couple different times, and started the thing back up the next day with a couple of oil changes, and the same starter, so don't give me that line of shit! Secondly, I bought this from you, without any type of stated warranty, or what it includes. Therefore, when you said it had a 90 day warranty, you disclosed nothing to me other than you would replace it. That means you're going to replace it, period, or I will call the BBB, and the Chamber of Commerce, and have you investigated for the kind of bullshit you're trying to pull.
Next, you had Bullhead Starter and Alternator rebuild this thing, so you need to call them and let them know their starter is for shit. Before you do this, we're going to disassemble this on the counter and you will see that there is no way any amount of mild water exposure can corrode a starter in 6 weeks, OR, I'm going to throw this ****in* starter through your front window!"
Well, guess what...Stan magically found some tools to disassemble the starter right there. He pops the two bolts out of the can and tries to show me the rust on the ends of the threads and says..."Here's some of your rust".
I said "Stan, the threads are exposed on the outside of the starter and any condensation would rust those. The shaft of the bolt would be rusted if there was any water INSIDE that can...those bolts are inside the can and would be the first to rust because they're cheap carbon steel bolts and not even stainless!"
So he shut up and continued to pull the end cap off the starter.
Whoever the younger guy sitting next to him is...Clint, Clit, Tim, George...whoever...says "See, loaded with rust...starter is shot".
I looked at him and said "Are you a ****in* idiot? Have you ever opened any kind of electric motor? That's surface rust on the can. There's no corrosion on the armature, the commutator is galled, and the red you see on the magnets is a paint job you moron. There's about a dime spot of rust on the inside of the can...how 'bout you let Stan be the one to say dumb shit?"
So, Stan agrees and says..."Yeah, that's not too bad...must be the starter...let me call Bullhead Starter".
He explains to the guy that I bought the starter a couple of months ago and let it sit for almost a month (this after I told him twice that I was in Needles less than 12 days ago and it was working fine). Anyway, he says that there's only minor surface rust and what can he do...
Well, the guy says no problem and he's going to warranty it.
Stan says "He's going to warranty it and give you the good guy warranty even though there's some rust".
So I end it by saying "Stan, that's called standing by your product and having integrity in business...you should try that some time!"
Walked out with a brand new starter!
Will sit the boat on the trailer before I go back to that azzhole again.
Good note is, I was talking to a guy at the tables and he said he thinks Stan is an azzhole too (he lives in Bullhead). Said to go down to Katherines off to the left side behind the docks and buildings and there's a guy in there that's an honest guy, and gave very honest prices, and even worked him in on a Saturday after 1PM just so the guy could have his boat the next day.
Guess I know where I'll be going!
Maybe we should change the RD Sux thing to Stan Sux!

1. Not everybody reads the HB forums
2. He probably treats different people differently. Regulars probably don't get gouged like the rest of us
3. No competition in the area...he's got the frickin' Walmart of boat shops around Bullhead/Laughlin, and everybody else is the 7/11...you might be able to find something to use on your boat at the others, but he'll have what you NEED for your boat. Therein lies the problem
4. None of us has actually beaten him down yet.
5. I had my family with me this last time, plus, somebody else solved my problem for me/him...otherwise, 4 would have been taken care of.

I must be the exception. Had my impeller go out on me last Friday, took it there at 7:30 (they open at 8:30) door was open so I went in. Talked to Mike in service dept, told him what happened and asked if there was anyway I could be on the water that day, he said he would take care of it. I picked up my boat at 1:30 pm repair was done (for less than Quality Marine charged last time) said my motor mounts were loose but tightend them for me, also told me about a couple of other minor problems they noticed.
Maybe I was just lucky?

Here's the deal Edmond...if you fix something the way it's supposed to, you're doing your job. If you put customer service behind it, you get a "good reputation". If you try to ream people, and knowingly gouge people on price, because you "can" when nobody else is open, or has the part you need, you are now an extortionist and an as*hole, and thus you get the routing that Holiday gets on HB.
I'm always willing to give somebody a second shot to make good on something, but this guy was a prick through and through.
